    David Bowie

    Today is his birthday.
    65

It's a pity he's not active in music business anymore.
Health problems I assume. Problems with his heart a few years ago......

    Likewise!

I gave Earthling a spin the other day, oddly enough.

    Happy Birthday Bowie!

I have had "Heroes" on rotation quite a lot recently - Blackout is my favorite track.

despite having all his albums on my computer, I don't think I've ever listened to more than a few songs. Where's a good place to start?

Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars has always been a favorite! Went and saw him for the 6th time in 2004. He was still amazing and his band was awesome!

Bowie rules. My first real concert was his last U.S. stop on the 'A Reality Tour.'

Interesting article on his 65th birthday, and how it's spent out of the limelight.

This is my favorite although anything he did from 1969-1980 is pretty much flawless. My favorite live album is Live at the Beeb (3-disc version).

I just finished posting a tribute of sorts to Bowie's great period from 1969-1980 which I'm sure many Bowie fans will cite as the ultimate period of his career as he could rarely do wrong at that time. You know how many great albums he put out in that period not counting best-of compilations? Who can that nowadays?

Hope he's having a wonderful birthday. One of my favorite people! My favorite Bowie album would have to be Aladdin Sane or Ziggy.

Totally love latter-day Bowie. I just put together a pretty wicked compilation CD filled only with tracks of his from 1997 onwards. Also have been discovering the album Tin Machine II which was totally undeserving of the critical slag-off it received. Shocked that more people haven't seem to have heard this one!

'you belong in rock and roll' is a mid-period stunner, in my book.

of course, i find outside to be underrated, but i'm sure that's not a problem around these parts. heathen is a deserving late-career critical smash, and there have definitely been some amazing tracks throughout the 90s and beyond. a lot of great outtakes (1917, toy, safe (in this skylife), we all go through, etc) as well!

Start off with "Low" and thank me later.

I had a good friend of mine turn me on to Low a few years ago and ever since then that and Outside get the most spins out of the DB collection

I'm not afraid to say 1. Outside, Earthling, 'hours...' and Heathen are my favorite albums overall.

I do also hold "Heroes", Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) and Diamond Dogs is high esteem as well.

I really like Black Tie, White Noise. These two are among my favourite Bowie songs:

I wish there was a comprehensive documentary about Bowie and his career, much like Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage doc...

On a side not, about to read David Bowie: Starman by Paul Trynka

Anything Bowie did from '69 to '80 is pretty much my favorite period as there aren't many flaws though my least favorite album of that period is David Live. I do enjoy the records he's made since Black Tie White Noise as I feel it was the start of a return to form period. I like Let's Dance but I really loathe Tonight (except for "Blue Jeans" and "Loving the Alien") and Never Let Me Down (though its singles were actually pretty good). I haven't heard the Tin Machine stuff though I will get around to it sometime. I really hope Bowie would be active again. Maybe do a few gigs just for fun and for charity.

I check out after LET'S DANCE. After that point he just vacillated between trying embarrassingly hard to ride the coattails of the latest trends (new jack swing, nin, late 90s d&b/jungle), and, failing that, trying to be "authentic" again (HOURS, HEATHEN, REALITY, etc) and making some of the most boring dad rock I've ever heard.
