    Albums of the Year- 2023

With just a few months left in the year, I figure we can start putting some lists together.

Final- I Am the Dirt Underneath Your Fingernails
Brian Jonestown Massacre- The Future is Your Past
Aphex Twin- Blackbox Life Recorder ep

I can't think of anything else for me that's coming out on the horizon for the rest of the year. I've given up on the Cure coming out with their new album. I don't expect NIN to have a new album anytime soon. New Godflesh and DM were good but didn't resonate with me personally. Looking forward to seeing other lists!

Loved the new Godflesh while being really disappointed with new Aphex Twin BTW lol. Gotta love opinions.

    1. Queens Of The Stone Age- In Times New Roman
    2. Royal Blood- Back To The Water Below
    3. Metallica- 72 Seasons
    4. Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds- Council Skies
    5. Foo Fighters- But Here We Are

    Honorable Mention: Filter- The Algorithm

I know it doesn’t count as an album, but it’s worth mentioning the 2 new Palms songs that were unearthed in 2023 (Opening Titles and End Credits). Listening to their 2013 debut book-ended by these tunes puts it into a much different light. Why on earth were these not included initially?? Good lord, what great material..

Speaking of Chino, I fully anticipate the new Crosses’ record to compete for #1 on this list.

going to give an honorable mention to Luke Vibert- Machine Funk
    solid acid record.

    honorable mention: The Orb- Prism
I really like the ambient moments on this record, some of their finest ambient. but to me, the album is weighed down by the reggae/house moments.

Chocolate Hills- Yarns from the Chocolate Triangle
this is more than an honorable mention, I'll probably put it behind the Final record from this year for me. great ambient album. this is what I was hoping for with the deep ambient stuff on the latest Orb album.

    JK Flesh- No Exits
really damn good release from Justin. noisy techno/trip hop whatever you want to call it. this one's more than an honorable mention too.

honorable mention: Meat Beat Manifesto vs DHS - Man From Mantis EP
no new ground broken, but I guess there doesn't really need to be at this point. does make me wish for a new MBM full length though, even though I haven't thoroughly enjoyed the past few records. Jack's always been an important musician to me personally.

need to give new Slowdive more listens, and catch up on Amon Tobin's recent output too. and the new Chemical Brothers.

JK Flesh is amazing. New Slowdive gets better the more you listen to it. I could say the same about Chemical Brothers tbh. First listen of "That Beautiful Feeling" was quite disappointing but it keeps growing on me more and more. Amon Tobin is good right off the bat lol.

The whole damn record is aging like a fucking 2005 bordeaux! Since the NYC show in August, Made To Parade has started to become my favorite...

The only gripe I have is the sequencing. I wish peephole was after paper machete or was dropped from the record and another darker song was put in its place. Going from carnavoyer into peephole is meh imo...

ok. listening to Final- Oblivion 0 and it's winning me over after not liking it after a few tries the past couple months. good pair of headphones and the right volume, the right time of year, the right frame of mind...this is taking me to another place...
very different from "I Am the Dirt Underneath Your Fingernails" but right now it's probably top 3-5 album of the year for me.

gave the Foo Fighters album a listen based on people putting it on their list here. I can't say I'm a Foos fan, but I really did enjoy the new album. diverse sounding, and I think Dave has a good signing voice.

    Alison Goldfrapp- Love Invention
some good dance pop fun. nice retro synths.

right now, Loud as Giants: Empty Homes, is my new album of the year. the soft, beautiful side of Final, with hints of the soft side of Jesu, and a touch of Pale Sketcher. so fucking good. never really gave the album a chance until recently. has become some of my favorite Broadrick material over the past 10-15 years.

I checked this out.. thank you thank you thank you. I've been in a serious depression lately. This has helped so much. What a great album. It's weird and beautiful. Like garage r and b. Almost like if dude from death grips made an r and b album. It's sooooooo good. I've listened to it six times. Now to track down a vinyl copy...
