has anyone ever made newspaper planter pots?
    yay or nay?
we are debating between buying some of the biodegradable ones (bamboo, i think) or just making them.
    mostly: are they sturdy enough?

Variable-color temperature bulbs for traditional sockets: do they exist?

Saw these at Ikea yesterday, but the store doesn't exist where I live and I'd prefer something I can get locally.

i think the phillips hue is probably your best bet. the westinghouse system is cheaper but the one i put in for a customer was a PAIN IN THE ASS, whereas the hue is simple and easy.

Holy fuck that stuff is expensive. Looks like I'm definitely sticking with "dumb" bulbs for the foreseeable future. Thanks for the link though!

Should i come off the band name Just Like You Imagined if i'm not making much music? i made a fuckton of songs last year but only actually recorded one of them.

And let's see, i released an instrumental on youtube like several months ago, and now i have someone rapping over it and @wizfan mixed it and we are gonna put that out, which will be MC Astro featuring Just Like You Imagined (After the Pulse mix.)

But, so, that's like 3 songs in 1.5 years that actually made it to the demo stage.

I have the Justlikeyouimagined.band facebook page and there might be some young musicians who are into NIN who would really appreciate having it more than me.

I'd say drop it. I mean, you can put your own twist on it, like "Just Like We Imagined" or "Like You Imagined" or some shizz. I'm of the opinion that band names that are song names from other bands are kinda cheesey.

    HMMMM.
    Like You Imagined
I kinda like that @Big Fat Matt

I only decided to use it for a band name because Trent decided to name his new band after a coil song.
You know, the thing is, most people don't KNOW that it's a song name.

A good friend and co-worker was asking me about Dillinger - he's a huge Soundgarden/Cornell fan. He asked me for a CD with my favorite Dillinger tracks. I use Google Play Music exclusively; anyone know of a way for me to legally download the tracks so I can give them to him to burn a disc?

Relevant support articles for various platform solutions. Easiest is to use the Chrome extension (which Google Support recommends over Music Manager), or downloading Music Manager:

Add music using Google Play Music for Chrome

Add your music with Google Play Music Manager

    Download music to listen offline

On play.google.com web, you can download your mp3s, it's there in the menus somewhere. I have localized interface so won't quote exactly, but when it asks to download application, there is also a link for direct download (can do only 2 or 3 times though). No DRM.

Anyone else listen to true crime podcasts? If so, which one(s)? I listen to "Casefile True Crime", "Crimetown", "Missing & Murdered: Who Killed Alberta Williams?", "Someone Knows Something", "Truth & Justice with Bob Ruff", "Sword and Scale" and lastly "Up and Vanished"... I like them for being investigative and truth in nature rather than commentary on the cases themselves.

Hopefully some of you can help me, forgive me… I copy and pasted this from my Reddit post .
I interviewed for a sales coordinator position at a food distribution company and was provided a post interview "case study"

Basically they provided me a faux sales presentation assignment. They have a house brand of alcohol and I'm supposed to create a small 3-5 slide PowerPoint presentation introducing the brand to the restaurant/grocery store chain of my choice. I wouldn't be presenting this, just emailing them the presentation for them to look at it.
Here's where I'm stuck. I'm thinking about annotating each slide with what I would be saying on each slide so they can read my presentation. I also am thinking of creating some extra handout PDFs with supplementary information that we would give to the proposed customer.
On one hand I feel it would come off as going above and beyond and showing off some of my other skills as well as taking initiative.
On the other hand I could see it as possibly off-putting and not providing what they asked for. I'm afraid of them thinking "I'm giving this person a simple task and they're wasting time creating extra stuff we didn't ask for".
Should I just stick to the vanilla slides and not include anything extra?
    Help!

If they asked you to provide an email copy of a PP presentation, it's likely they are looking for:

    * Do you suck at PP?
    * Does your PP contain walls of 8 point text, Ken Burns effect (noooooo), pictures of sunsets, transition effects, red text on black background, puke puke puke?
    * Are you good at persuasion? Your simple and effective PP can show and infer that (or not)
    * PP DOES provide the ability to annotate with notes (for your use) that AREN'T shown to your audience- AND THAT IS GOOD.

We were taught this in college:

    Follow the 5/5/5 rule

To keep your audience from feeling overwhelmed, you should keep the text on each slide short and to the point. Some experts suggest using the 5/5/5 rule: no more than five words per line of text, five lines of text per slide, or five text-heavy slides in a row.

@allegro Absolutely, but since this is me up against a few other applicants I want to blow them out of the water. I would also imagine this could possibly affect my potential monetary offer as well.

Right. So focus on the job title and its job description: sales coordinator.

So I applied for a job (writng copy/website editing) and after the initial interview they sent me a test with 8 tasks. One of the tasks I can't even attempt to bluff through. Is there anyone here that can tell me what they want from me, please?

"Prepare the concept and instructions for a 160x600 banner ad for product X
    The concept needs to include:

    Detailed instructions for the designer

    Complete ad copy

    Visual concept of the ad"

I am clueless when it comes to design. What are "detailed instructions"? Do I have to talk pixels? Fonts and font sizes? What is "visual concept" here? Do I specify the photos to be used? Colour palette? WHAT

@elevenism - (Kris here.) I also thought of putting this question here because I still don't feel like doing private messages, and I figured this question can be answered and summed up with one post anyway. (And the fact that you've been okay with discussing these topics in the open anyway.)

Aside from also being a conspiracy theorist, would you also consider yourself to be a paranormal investigator? (Based on your (Real) Lights In The Sky thread, that would seem to be the case.)

I didn't know, or somehow forgot that was the actual term for people who are interested and/or take the time the actually study and research paranormal activities. I suppose it's also because I hear of conspiracy theories and conspiracy theorists much more than I hear of paranormal activities and paranormal investigators. (That is unless I'm on YouTube, which is rife with them.)

I was also completely unaware of how topics of that nature seem to actually connect and overlap each other, as well as conservative and libertarian sociopolitical ideologies/perspectives. A lot of them seem to be theists too. The connection/association between conspiracy theories and paranormal activities was a lot greater than I thought.

I could also still see how this also helped in your overall appreciation and enjoyment of Year Zero as well.

does anybody (on here) remember the home made NIN postcards that a fan in the very early (bot-detected circa early 90's) days made, and that they would send these postcards from random/obscure locations to anybody that gave their address (?)
does anybody know what i am talking about(?) distinctly I am remembering 'NIN' spelled out in long black fake fingernails with a red brick background, and another one that had almond roca cat turds formed into the shape of 'NIN'..
I actually ran across those postcards not too long ago when packing/unpacking...

    who was that person?
how many postcards did there end up being altogether?
i always thought that having a poster of all those postcards would be a cool thing to hang on the wall.

holy shit. I didn't know that was you all this time.
First, let me clear something up: I am a socialist. It's actually kind of fucked up how the whole "conspiracy" movement rose out of the right, but it is what it is: some of those fuckers REALLY hate the gvmt.

Also, I'm not a conspiracy theorist like a lot of these lunatics on youtube. But I DO keep my eyes and mind open. There is a lot of really weird shit where we have like incontrovertible evidence, I mean, shit that NO DOUBT exists. See Bohemian Grove, the Georgia Guidestones, etc. Now: I'm not one of these people who has some grand idea of what it all MEANS. I just think that shit is insanely interesting and I WONDER, you know?
As far as the paranormal, sigh, at the risk of sounding like a complete fucking lunatic, yes, I most certainly believe in various aspects of the paranormal. This is mostly due to personal experience. I wouldn't call myself an INVESTIGATOR, but I am interested in such things. But again, like with the "lights in the sky" question. With that specifically, I damn sure don't claim to know that we are seeing alien spaceships: I just know people are seeing SOMETHING anomalous. Also, the government has gone to great lengths to like spread misinformation on the subject, making it impossible to research. I think that's pretty goddamn interesting.

Basically I look at it like this: we have no fucking clue who or what we are or where we came from or where we are going. Anyone who thinks they do is deluded or lying. We don't really know why ANYTHING came to exist for that matter.

So it follows that goddamn near anything is possible. Nothing much would surprise me. I don't really claim to KNOW much of anything about anything, but I keep my mind completely open.

I hope that in making myself look like a raving lunatic, I have answered your question.
So @Halo Infinity is kris. That blows my mind. PM me brotha man; it's been too long. This is as far as I'm getting into this shit publicly.

Also, HELL YES having an open mind about these things enhanced the arg and year zero.

That's a pretty big generalization, there. I have known lots of prog rock fans for over 40 years and I don't know a mean one in the bunch. While Prog concerts tend to be big guy-fests, the guys are very very nice. And pretty nerdy.

Lately, I've been wanting to find movies that remind me of being a kid. I was born in 80, so it would be eighties or early nineties movies. Of course you've got the Goonies and ET and Indiana Jones and the usual suspects, but I was thinking we could come up with some more obscure gems too.
I really hope that some of y'all see this. Perhaps I should make it into a thread.

I was going to make a "general cinema talk" thread, but I fear that as soon as I do, someone will tell me that there is already such a thread.

For me it was all about: The Princess Bride, The Never Ending Story, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Innerspace, and the Three Amigos. I also liked that goofy movie "The Explorers" with River Phoenix and Ethan Hawke. Probably a bunch of others that I'm forgetting. The Star Wars movies, obviously.

I also had this tendency to enjoy weirdly mature movies when I was young. Like for some reason when I was about six or seven years old I was obsessed with Empire of the Sun, which in retrospect seems like a super weird movie for a little kid to be so into. I didn't even understood any of it. I just loved it for some unexplainable reason. I don't even think it occurred to me that it wasn't a kids movie.

Hello I'm a recuiter who has done a decent amount of sales hiring -- if you're concerned I'd advise you to do both. Do the vanilla slides and then go "I also wanted to [expand your reasoning here] and have included a set of slides with my presentation notes and some additional handouts.
    or whatever
