Ok - so having listened a few times...

Interesting new direction - electronica/jazz?! I like it. Really cool instruments and drums AND voice.

However - the song itself is too repetetive. There's no chord changes. And the lyrics are just repeated too much. THe breakdown in the middle is great, but then it goes into the typical NIN ending - the chorus, but with just a wall of noice building up that cuts off. It's been done WAY too many times now to be interesting.

I'm mixed on this song. The drums, the electronics, the saxophones, the vocals are so cool. But the structure of the song is too flat for it to really capture me.

My iTunes purchase wasn't tagged with lyrics. Can you just paste the whole thing in here so they can update NINWiki with the official?

the reaction to this song as a first single reminds me of when "the day the world went away" was released. a lot of us were dumbfounded. at first, anyways.

the energy (not the sound) of this reminds me of "beside you in time" and "underneath it all" -- like of a wall of sound, chaotic storm before some kind of calm.

It was. In iTunes, right click, then click "Song Info", then "lyrics".

And, for some reason, I can't copy the lyrics...

Interesting visuals. That's the picture from the cover, isn't it? A picture of a black sun (?) is a funny choice for a song that everybody's comparing to Blackstar.

Still holding out listening to it though. I'll wait for next month either wait to hear it live or wait to hear it in the context of the album.
Just give it a listen now. You're building up - sounds like you have already built up - an idea of the song inside your mind that's almost mythical and no way in hell could be matched by the real thing. It's one of the more unique tracks in the catalog, but really not as out there as this thread would make you believe. The only initial reaction you'll achieve this way won't be stronger than an underwhelming "eh? that was it?" no matter if you actually end up liking it or not.

    Shockingly, pretty tame (for now).

First time hearing it, song is pretty “meh”. Music and beat isn’t bad, but the singing is. Kind of a forgetful track after a few listens.

So far, everything I'm reading has been super positive ... I'm sure a few "WHAT THE HELL, THIS DOESN'T SOUND LIKE THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL! HUR HUR HUR." will show up eventually.

p.s. in case anyone was wondering why @Victor Newman is being quite so...well, the way he's acting - it's because he's cashpiles.

the issue i have with a lot of the new material is there's no arc to to any of these songs....its a beat over a repetitive chorus/refrain then it takes a turn (which is great) but it repeats a different beat over another repetitive chorus. there's no song here, i get they're not going for the traditional verse/chorus structure but this along with a lot of what we've heard on the EPs just doesnt work...it doesnt take you anywhere, build you up, bring you down. its just kinda....there.

    From that Zane Lowe interview:

...But it wasn’t necessarily what we thought it was going to be when we started. I thought it was going to go more science fiction. I don’t really want to overwhelm you with cleverness and deep diving and part of that felt like an arms race and it also felt like a cop out.

Trent's giant smile in the photo with Zane Lane is the most wonderfully disconcerting thing I've seen in weeks.

Add Violence was a little more on track, but yeah... NTAE and GBDTD are not my cup o' tea

All Time Low, another track undeniably influenced by Bowie has the line "Shut the goddamn door"
What is it about Bowie influence and doors? Is this a coincidence?

Listened to it once, it was unexpected, but great.

One thing I know is that the more I'll listen to it, the more I'll like it.

But I'm waiting until the 22nd to hear the whole album. I hope I'm strong enough for that Lol.

Also, wow the music video is literally a growing black star.

He also samples Bowie singing "Falls wanking to the floor" from "Time" on one of the Further Down the Spiral remixes. Not "door", but... it rhymes?

Update: I totally caved. Trent released it. He wants me to hear it. Right? OK, I'm going with that.
