eyes wide shut - some say it’s kubricks worst. i disagree. it’s his most human, his strangest, his most mysterious. over the years, it’s the one i’ve returned to the most and it might just be his greatest achievement. too bad history will never allow it.
the master - almost chose there will be blood instead for my pta representation, but the master just gets a little more under my skin. I have a deep ambient love of the entire film but really my adoration and obsession lies in two scenes: the processing scene (one of the most intense scenes featuring two actors just talking in a room i can think of) and the final meeting between lancaster and freddie where he sings to about the slow boat to china. i feel like the answers to humanity’s struggles and flaws exist in those scenes if you look hard enough.
synecdoche, new york - i love magical realism, and kaufman’s work has it in spades. syncedoche feels like the ultimate grand masterpiece of a sad magical world where reality bends to fit your depression. its kinda beautiful how he breaks the rules of time and space to better fit that narrative. it’s a fucking sad story at its core though, eek.
no country for old men - just the motherfucking coen brothers kicking ass and taking names. it’s probably not their most important contribution to cinema, but it’s maybe their most bold. no soundtrack, no winners, gritty, brutal, nihilistic. embrace the darkness.
blue velvet - just a director letting his bizarre twisted fever dream slip onto the page and later on screen. there’s a pervasive ethereal gravitas to the whole thing that make you feel like lynch knows something about the world that we don’t.
goodfellas - it’s just a fucking good time. well edited, highly entertaining, surprising, violent and has a killer soundtrack. it’s the movie i’d most likely rewatch on this list at any time, in any mood.
django unchained - like goodfellas, it’s just a fucking fun movie. it’s playful in execution but serious in subject matter, something very few directors could pull off. and that dinner scene? whoa daddy, good suspense.
the evil dead - watching the film and appreciating the meta-narrative of a group of college kids having to use low budget creativity to create horror is a huge element of my love of the movie. it doesn’t hurt that it’s actually a pretty spooky, fun, gory good time on its own too.
rope - such an underrated hitchcock. one continuous shot! sorry birdman, hitchcock did it 70 years before you did. go to barnes and noble, find the generic 5 film “hitchcock essential” collections, remove “the birds”, put this one in its place.
whiplash - it’s a horror movie disguised as a movie about jazz drumming. it’s a nice tight 90 minutes, no wasted space and has a killer monologue about passion from Jk simmons. what’s not to love?
