I think it has been said before, but I think the current presidential would create some motivation for Year Zero pt. 2.

Eh. I'd be fine if he never revisits that era ever again. That's honestly Trent's weakest record under the NIN name in my opinion. I think an album of political tension would work fine, but in the context of Year Zero both as an album and a story was just lackluster lyrically and musically to me.

Either way, my opinion aside I'm really excited to see what's in store. I honestly feel we'll get an album sometime in 2017 and then hopefully some tour announcements as well but we'll get a single before year's end.

His is certainly a minority opinion. If you offered me a choice between YZ and everything he has done since, I'm taking YZ, without hesitation (pun intended).

Yeah, I've revisited everything else more often than YZ since it's release almost 10 years ago. Weird to think it's been that long...I can't get past some of the production and on the nose concept of it. I know some either people on the board share my opinion as well.

My thoughts are with how this new album will sound though, I would hope an album like Bowie's Blackstar would inspire him to take a lot more risks this time around and push his song structures even further. I know he's a huge fan of Oneohthrix Point Never and I think a record that resembles the chaos off his last record Garden of Delete would be a dream come true.

I like the music/production of YZ, but honestly hope he doesn't go down the political path ever again.

Hate to break it to you, but the physical singles market essentially died in 2007. Yes, I'm sure someone will post some counter-example of some mega-band releasing a single last week, but that is by far the exception rather than the rule. The music market economics and consumption changed to where that model simply couldn't be sustained anymore. There will not be another NIN physical, non-promo single release.

If your criteria is that it has its own "album art", then you should track down CBH, Copy of A, and Everything. They were the digital singles from HM, and they each had their own artwork.

This is completely understandable of course. However, I really don't see why bands and labels have completely abandoned the idea of the "single release." It would be awesome if when a digital single came out it contained a few extra tracks like demos, live tracks, b-sides... the way it used to. I mean, it would be a loss I'm sure to produce a physical item, but why not have actual digital singles instead of just the album track in a standalone filter. I know I would stream that and I assume that would equal additional revenue for the label. It isn't going to cost them anything to make some demos available and i'm sure fans would listen to it.

You kinda answered it yourself though, I think -- people want those things and it's low-effort to release them. So take that a step further from a business perspective and you can release them separately some other time to boost their profile (rather than being eclipsed by main singles), sell them on their own, make up for a lull in releases or revenue, include on a box set release someday.

In general though I think the actual fans that would be looking for those things are in enough of a minority that they're also the same of us that would spring for special releases and so if they are ever gonna put things like that out, they just do it that way.

That said I wish the awesome Closer to God style maxisingle was still a thing and they'll always be a really cool obscure trend of the past to me. I just miss all the cool alt. versions and high quality remixes in general.

    off topic rant{

    - Many cars/trucks are now being manufactured without CD players
    - iPhones / Androids do not have CD players
    - Music Stores are no longer found in Malls
    - CD's are clutter
    - The idea of using a credit card to order a CD online and wait for it to show up in the mail is not appealing... especially if you're teen/preteen

"the physical singles market" is dead. The sale of CDs is dead.

Spotify/Apple Music/Youtube is it; and torrenting of course.

It would be nice if artists accepted this and started working with Spotify/Apple to create an ever better user experience when listening to an album.

100% agree, but as a fan and collector I would be completely happy to buy a book of art to accompany the digital album. I also don't see a need for the plastic disc with the music on it that I rip and never play again. I do however look at well designed CD booklets and vinyl fairly regularly when listening to an album. That is the one aspect that doesn't translate well on a phone, PC, etc. I still think with such an easy way of releasing music more labels and artists need to get on board releasing concerts officially, demos, etc... I would bet more than the die hard fan would stream a concert they attended at least once.

Hardcoremusic fans still listen to cds/vinyl and like the actual physical product.....Kanye or Drake fans are more than content to listen to their music on an ipod shuffle....personally I cant fathom listening to Pornography by The Cure or In Utero by Nirvana on a fucking ipad

Yeah, you can set alerts on Twitter- comes up as a banner on the iPhone just like a text or app alert. I think Trent is the only person I've got set on alert. Don't follow many people either though.

Huh. I'm in the same boat myself, only a couple people I follow and even then it's mostly retweets. The only reason I even saw the tweet is I refreshed and that was at the top of the feed.

Now, I’d be culturally remiss if I didn’t ask you when we can expect a new Nine Inch Nails album. Will it be sometime this year?

[Laughs] I am working on music right now. That’s all I can say!

That's a great interview. The stuff he said about metropolitan areas versus the rest of the country, he could have been talking about Brexit britain

Or about Pegida Germany. Sadly it is a pattern in many countries.

I'm telling you, we'll have a 30-sec snippet of a new single on December 31.
