    Anathema

Anathema will return in April with Weather Systems, their brand new studio album.

Weather Systems is the follow-up to 2010’s We're Here Because We're Here. That album featured prominently in numerous end-of-year polls and the producer, Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree), has described it as 'definitely among the best albums I’ve ever had the pleasure to work on.'

The bar for Weather Systems has been set pretty high then but Daniel is certain that the album will exceed these lofty expectations, ‘it feels like we are at a creative peak right now, and this album reflects that. Everything from the production to the writing to the performances are a step up from our last album.’

He continues, ‘This is not background music for parties. The music is written to deeply move the listener, to uplift or take the listener to the coldest depths of the soul.’

The intertwining melodic structures of these profoundly beautiful songs are intensely powerful, yet simple. These are songs that will transport the listener closer to the heart of life, that is to say, to the heart of themselves.

It is also an album of polarity. The play of opposites; light and shade, birth and death, love and fear. The simple truths of life and loss, hope and strength and darker internal themes are all explored here.

The album was recorded in Liverpool, North Wales and Oslo, each place significant to Anathema past, present and future. The record was produced and mastered by 5 times Norwegian Grammy nominated Christer-André Cederberg (Animal Alpha, In the Woods..., Drawn), who Daniel has described as ‘a revelation. His calmness and brilliance has helped to bring about the greatest inter-band chemistry that Anathema have experienced together in their career.’

This album will please fans who call for more of Lee Douglas’s vocals, as her role within Anathema’s brand of alternative, melodic rock has matured to become an integral energy. In this way and more, Weather Systems is the sound of a band finding their voice and growing in stature, moving further along their artistic path with a truly stunning musical vision.

Their best ever work? ‘Not yet’ says Daniel, but he does believe that with Weather Systems they have surpassed previous glories; ‘we are pleased and proud of the record and we feel that, alongside the best moments of WHBWH, this record contains our very best work so far in what is becoming a long career.’

Weather Systems will be available on Kscope from April 16th 2012.
    Tracklist
    01. Untouchable, Part 1
    02. Untouchable, Part 2
    03. The Gathering Of The Clouds
    04. Lightning Song
    05. Sunlight
    06. The Storm Before The Calm
    07. The Beginning And The End
    08. The Lost Child
    09. Internal Landscapes

Quite a surprise, considering this will be the third year in a row a new album has come out. We're Here Because We're Here has become something of a staple on my iPod, many of the songs forever stuck in my head. This is shaping up to be an interesting year for new releases.

In regards to Anathema particularly, horrible no. Sappy...a little bit.

But someone's gotta wave the flag.

Your post lead me to a bit of youtubing, and I found this gem (the whole concert is apparently part of the upcoming package):

    It's on the Blu-ray.

I didn't really realize until just now, but updating this thread is making me think of some of the things I'm hearing about HM in relation to the shift in sound this band has made. I'm not suggesting outright that anyone into Trent's doing now will get into Anathema's music, but they've gone through a more dramatic shift from the gloomy doomy sound of their earlier work to the more ethereal positivity of their last two records specifically.

They're also just about to embark on their first full tour of America, in tandem with the release of Universal.

Anathema has become my favorite progressive rock band after the hiatus of Porcupine Tree. It doesn't sound like there are many Anathema fans here but for the ones that are here you go (from their FB page):

"So.. The first session of the new anathema album recording is complete, and it has been enjoyable and productive. Norway is a good place to work, we have the right team around us and it's all sounding spectacular.

    There are 9 or 10
songs on the record, and so far it's impossible to pick out the very best. There are a pretty wide range of styles and genres on the album and we believe very much in these new songs.

There is a break now for Christmas and we will get back together in the new year and finish what we started.

    Good wishes

    Anathema."

ANATHEMA return in June with 'distant satellites', their brand new studio album.

Due to be released on 9th June via Kscope, 'distant satellites' is the highly anticipated follow up to 2012’s Weather Systems, recorded at Cederberg Studios in Oslo, with producer Christer-André Cederberg.

The beautifully ethereal artwork was created by Korean new media artist Sang Jun Too and based around his Distant Light Installation

The band released a statement on their new album:

“distant satellites is the culmination of everything ANATHEMA been working up to so far in our musical path. It contains almost every conceivable element of the heartbeat of Anathema music that it is possible to have.

There is beauty, intensity, drama, quietude, and extra musical dimensions that the band have previously only hinted at. All built on the song writing chemistry of Daniel, John and Vincent ~ and the haunting voice of Lee Douglas.

Produced and mixed once again by our very own Christer-André Cederberg and with some songs also mixed by the unassailable Steven Wilson, It's a special and unique release for the band.

ANATHEMA hopes the fans get as much joy from listening to and feeling the music as we did in creating it.”

AAAHHHHHHHH this is exciting! I first discovered Anathema after blind-buying Weather Systems and have been in love with their music ever since.

Does it make more sense to release the hi-res audio on DVD-A or Blu-ray? Releasing hi-res audio on DVD-V doesn't make sense to me.

I suspect it's more of a financial consideration. I don't know by how much but I would guess that Blu's are more expensive to produce. The band doesn't have the pull of a Steven Wilson (regardless if he mixed it or not), who could book a US tour tomorrow and have some respectable numbers. Anathema as it is now have only just started touring in America recently, and only as an opening act.

I saw Steven Wilson on the G4D and TRTRtS tours in PA. He had less than 1,000 fans in attendance. I think Anathema could meet those attendance numbers.

The Universal Blu-ray is fantastic. I'm sure more Americans are listening to Anathema now. We'll see.

Blurays are still horribly expensive to produce, and the DVD-V vs. DVD-A consideration seems to be playback compatibility (very few people have DVD-A compatible players even now that we've moved onto Bluray and all those drives have DVD-reading lasers, for some reason). i also want lossless 5.1 but unfortunately Anathema don't do that yet. hopefully the hi-res stereo will be 24/48 like WHBWH was.

I'm glad there's several Anathema fans here. I look forward to what you all have to say about Distant Satellites. The cover art is visually appealing. I'm a sucker for album cover art that pulls me in.

    Anathema
Distant Satellites (cd/2dvd deluxe edition preorder)
    Subtotal: $56.55 USD
    Shipping: $19.00 USD
    Total: $75.55 USD

I like to support Burning Shed when I can. I have bought from them in the past for musicians like Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson, Gavin Harrison, Blackfield, Riverside, and Anathema's Universal - Mail Order Fan's Edition Blu-ray/DVD-V/2 CD (which is long out of print). Unfortunately 2 DVDs and 1 CD pertaining to Distant Satellites is too steep for me. I'll have to wait for an alternative with my local record store or Amazon. I'm not sure how that's an early bird price. I can't imagine what Burning Shed's regular price will be. I know it would be shipped from the UK and the currency exchange rate doesn't help matters. But that price is rather inflated for 2 DVDs and 1 CD in this day and age.

I think the reason that edition is so expensive is because of the 44 page heavyweight hardback book that comes with it, there is a CD/DVD version that is much cheaper at 16.20 USD. It just has the DVD with the surround mix as a bonus. I'd wager that version will be on Amazon and the one you're looking at will be exclusive to Burning Shed.

I guess I'm just a sucker for "making of" documentaries. The only way to get that exclusive DVD is to order the deluxe edition. This looks like the album to own for 2014. I can't wait to hear it.

Surprisingly I connected with this one quicker than the previous two albums, which grew slowly on me. I can definitely see how it will be divisive but it's a pretty bold step with one foot going forward while keeping the other in the tradition of the last two. I definitely see it as a work of a band that's still growing and maturing.

In case anyone is still interested, there is a Japanese release that features a Blu-ray rather than DVD version of the album that's available for purchase on their Amazon.

It's also on Amazon but this is slightly cheaper thus the best value for the Blu-ray version.

i frickin' love CDJapan! ordered the latest Agalloch and Boris from them. decent prices (better than Inoxia for Boris) and they are always on the money with info and release dates.

still holding out to see if The End Records is going to have a bundle, though.

Weather Systems is a good album. Yes there is some sappiness, but the melodies can be beautiful. This is an album that I personally find attractive, but probably won't tell my friends about for fear that they won't "get it".
