It’s about the canons of ethics. When you become a lawyer, you take an oath to uphold the canons of ethics.

This has been a problem re Justice Thomas for years. The jerk has refused to recuse himself in cases where he clearly should have recused himself. But there’s no teeth to go after him about it, because he’s a SCOTUS Justice.

All of this does not mean “above the law.” It’s a matter of “ethics.” The American Bar Association controls matters of ethics and doles out disciplinary actions for violations. Not necessarily per any statutes (laws), but per the canons of ethics and ABA rules. This article is saying that there is no disciplinary body that deals with ethics and the SCOTUS. Not ILLEGAL ACTIVITY and the SCOTUS, but ethics.

Well, maybe not. I understand your point, and it makes more sense now. If RBG pistol-whipped a guy she could still be charged with assault. But it still feels like it is, to a certain degree, a bit of an "untouchable" status. Because once they reach the SCOTUS, they're out of the scope of the ABA and it's "ethics be damned". I mean...83 freaking complaints, many of which would have stopped anyone else in any other field from even being hired, let alone keeping a job if they'd come up after the fact, and there's literally nothing that can be done about them. That's maddening. It may not be literally above the law status, but it sure puts them in a much more protected class. Who else receives such a broad scope of protections? Isn't the president himself even open to ethics complaints?

The whole thing is pretty weird. That’s a pretty safe (and pretty VACANT at night) neighborhood. Considering the mail that Smollett received prior to this incident, it appears that someone stalking him would do this.

Probably old news to you, but CBS Chicago is reporting that "sources" are again indicating that evidence points to Smollett orchestrating this, and that the two brothers who were arrested have already been released and are cooperating with the investigation. WTF?

I don't think there is any evidence "against" him at this point. Two dudes saying he did something is just hearsay. Police would need more evidence than just two guys' accusations. The CPD asked Smollett to return for a follow-up interview re what they discussed with the two other people, but Smollett is refusing. I don't know if that's his own choice, or it's per his attorneys. He's hired some heavy hitter Chicago attorneys.

There's been a growing outcry in the black community right now because the media and the CPD is spending so much time and effort and resources on this Smollett case, meanwhile people have been shot to death or shot and injured and the cops haven't solved these cases in YEARS and people are demanding justice.

Emphasis mine, this has been a major point that a lot of folks have rightly taken issue with. There are inconsistencies with Smollett and this incident and the Hollywood press is also reporting on other things, but reporters hitting Twitter and the news with every rumor (the elevator video, which turned out to not be true) has muddied this up and made things worse. They need to be reporting on a lot of the other cases you mentioned and hold the police accountable to those as well.
