    Halo 1-28: The Journey.

So when TR announced new NIN coming soon, I decided it would be a good idea to listen to all the halos in order, twice.

Because there are multiple versions of halos I made a few rules and exceptions. For the most part, I stuck to the domestic versions and vinyl configurations. For example, Halo Three (HLAH) is in its 7-track domestic US vinyl configuration.

Tracks are replaced with their remastered versions (PHM & TDS) and appear on "first halo" appearance (lead singles like Down In It, MOTP & TDTWWA for example). Going vinyl inspired in the track list was cool for the fragile era so the WITT single tracks are here, but more representative of halos 11, 13, and 14.

    The track list:

    1. Down in It (Remastered)
    2. Down In It (Shred)
    3. Down In It (Singe)
    4. Head Like a Hole (Remastered)

Is it going to bother you when I mention you're missing a few tracks?

Not counting non-halo tracks, 37 and 38 Ghosts, a handful of remixes only on vinyl (there's a full list of NIN mixes here), Dead Souls, +Appendage - and then there's things like the bonus tracks on TDS-DE such as Liar

But I do like this idea a lot, though Jesus it would take a while

No not at all! See, I had to make rules.

I am missing Opal, The brilliant Clouser Versions from v2 FDTS, burn, dead souls, and the three TDS demos, the Japanese with teeth tracks, the hesitation marks remixes, the NINJA tracks.... Some of these are my favorite NIN songs.

One other rule is it had to exist digitally. So that leaves out appendage, and the vinyl year zero remixed tracks.

Total time for this playlist is 19 horse and 55 minutes.

I also made a smart playlist that has one rule: Artist is NOT Nine inch nails and I'll be listening to that for the next week

Another reason for leaving out the TDS DE tracks is that's not how they came out in 1994-1995, they didn't appear on the halo until 2004. Same logic that puts get down make love back on to Sin.

What's the rule for dropping 37 and 38 though? They're on domestic release, albeit a deluxe version.

(I count Dead Souls as on TDS, even though it was only on the Japanese version, because it was halfway through the album, instead of tacked on the end as a bonus track)

They aren't mixed down or mastered right? Just stems for tracks i believe. So therefore they're "unmixed and unmastered"

And I too will always associate Dead Souls and Burn with TDS really, but if it really were to live on TDS it would've been played at Webster Hall

I just looked in my liner notes to the Japanese TDS, on both occurrences of Dead Souls, it is listed as Dead Souls (Bonus Track). Also, the blue for the credits to Dead Souls is a shade lighter than the rest of the blue (a slightly less deeper shade of mushroom blue, i suppose). It just doesn't... fit. Same way "reptilian" is in a different font than the rest of the font on the japanese FDTS (look closely and you'll see on both the disc and the track listing).

Side note, was TPD actually on the TPD EP in the US? I thought only us foreigners got it

It was not! Great question. This is the version from Halo 15 with the fade out placed back into the track list where it would be internationally (plus it would sound out of place after The Fragile and before Things Falling Apart).

I would take out the boring HLAH EP and replace it with the UK one, which was the one Trent wanted to release but his label said otherwise. But add Down In It (demo) to it, because that's cool in a raw sort of way.

Only the cover of the import is what TR wanted to do. The Opal mix was done a month after Sin was released. For this, the import HLAH isn't actually a halo. Seriously, go look.

The fact is, the 'Halo' series is not as well curated as we'd perhaps hope.

If you are looking for a representative portrait of the band's progression, "Down In It (Demo)" should start things off, then the un-remastered Pretty Hate CD, then "Opal" and "Get Down", then Broken & Fixed, TDS Deluxe, the video version of "The Perfect Drug" to represent Closure, and then your preferred Fragile configuration including B-sides and all of Still. Pause to wait for three years, then play With Teeth (including "Home"), "Non-Entity", "Not So Pretty Now" and then Year Zero, Ghosts I-IV and The Slip (plus "Theme for Tetsuo: The Bullet Man"), before finishing with Hesitation Marks. Most of the remixes after 1995 aren't worth including in a marathon session IMO.

I read about your "journey" yesterday, made a smirk "this is pointless" but then today - what do you know - i put on AATCHB (LIVE) and TDS (DELUXE).
Afterwards i see this topic again and go "ahem, was i lured into that, or what?" Now a dilemma for tomorrow - PHM/B/F/TPD or WT/YZ/G/TS?
(Be damned all those acronyms, BTW)

Having owned both versions of HLAH for 15 years, I am somewhat embarrassed to say that I did not notice that the UK version wasn't a Halo. Also I guess I got my facts wrong. Sorry.

Well, for one thing, then you'd get tracks from Broken era popping up in 2014 - remixes (and demos) don't really follow the era rules.

Ok so, tracks that were not released in a reasonable time frame to the time period in which they created move to the end of that time period.

Plus I am referring to NIN tracks not tracks that were released by others such as remixes by fans.

Well then you start breaking up releases, Perfect Drug gets taken out of WITT and so for America, out of the halos entirely; Recoiled is obliterated; 38G/Demon Seed just causes problems. Chronological order of release kinda makes more sense (or make a master release when there's TOO much variance, like WITT)

I was originally saying not to limit yourself to just halo numbered releases. Perfect Drug was first released on the Lost Highway soundtrack 1996. Recoiled is kind of grey matter but none the less the remixes where done for NIN. Ghosts 37 and 38 shouldn't be any issue. Demon Seed was based off of 38 but is not entirely the same as 38. If anything Demon Seed could be considered a variation of 38.

If anything Demon Seed could be considered a variation of 38.
But that defeats the point of this, which is listening to Halos - not Seeds, Nulls or Sigils, not soundtracks and not other stuff. If you're listening to Lost Highway, you might as well throw in Driver Down and Videodrones;Questions, and then fuck, why not everything Trent's ever done.

Well everything is not a bad idea, but I was just referring to NIN tracks. Halo numbers have not really followed to much structure with the exception of their appearance on commercial releases. Seeds numbers have been used for promotional releases, but they didn't start until 2005 or so, plus they have not been include on all promotional release since. Sigils are not NIN.
