I personally didn't really find anything wrong with what he said. While I would definitely commend him for making a statement in support of LGBTQ+ rights or an anti-DeSantis statement (because I really, really hate that guy), I can't blame him for wanting to stay out of it. Why does he NEED to be an "ally," why can't it just be about the music for him? Maybe he (or even one or more of the other band members?) would prefer to remain neutral and doesn't want to get too political and divide his fanbase, likely losing a good chunk of them (though it would be the intolerant & transphobic ones, so he probably wouldn't care, but probably still bad for business). They're not Rage Against the Machine, maybe Maynard just wants to be a singer, not a political spokesperson. And if that's the case, is that really so bad? He's likely not going to change anyone's mind anyway. I get that these are very important issues and in Florida, people's rights are being taken away, but can you honestly imagine any far-right, transphobic republicans reading or hearing Maynard's thoughts on the matter and abandoning their bigoted views as a result? I'm going to say no. Would it have been nice to see him try? Yes, but it would be an exercise in futility that would only serve to please his fans on the left, while angering his fans on the right; it more than likely would not bring about any actual, meaningful change.

He's definitely right that — for famous people, especially — "every single thing you say or do is twisted and conformed into some fundamentalist far-right or far-left agenda" (though the right is guilty of this far more often than the left). Despite the fact that the guy has been occasionally cross-dressing onstage for decades, I saw TONS of people online assuming that he was making a statement and either celebrating him for it or hating on him and bashing him for it, depending on their political stance. Hell, within 24 hours of Tool playing at Welcome to Rockville, I saw someone on Facebook post a meme where they had Photoshopped Maynard onto a six-pack of Bud Light. It's undeniably true that people (not just music publications using it for clickbait, but certainly PLENTY of that, too) jump to conclusions and twist his words to fit an agenda of some kind. Still, Maynard probably should have seen this coming, given what has been happening in Florida lately. Hell, the timing of this and the fact that it was in Florida even had me thinking it might be his own way of being defiant and criticizing the "Don't Say Gay" bill. But Tool has never really been an openly political band, so why should they start now? I think when it comes to Tool performing onstage, they just want it to be about the music and the spectacle, not preaching politics to people who already have their minds made up (especially in a festival environment in Florida).
All of this kinda along with what I said earlier. Tool has denied being an openly political band all along.

Which is kind of bullshit when you look at their commentary on… Everything.

But Maynard’s made some explicitly political statements before (IE when he called himself a snowflake and told people who are in the military/police/etc that it’s their duty to protect snowflakes). Danny wore shirts saying Republicans were Nazis in 2006. eMOTIVe had the video for Counting Bodies that openly had George W Bush killing sheep. During the 2004 APC tour, Maynard encouraged people to go out and vote against George W Bush and spoke out about Howard Stern getting fired or whatever that whole thing was. Puscifer made fun of Trump in the video for The Arsonist (but also featured Joe Rogan puke).

But Maynard has also said he regrets doing eMOTIVe so explicitly and he felt like he stuck his neck out a bit with 10,000 Days and the fans hated it.

    So whatever.

It’s just all very in character for Maynard who—as a middle aged white guy—wants to “stay above the fray” and comment as an outsider. And he’s got a very Kumbaya mentality about a lot of it.

So, I think Maynard’s right about everything getting twisted into a politics narrative. I think Maynard is kind of being a naïve, selfish, dick by not just allowing this to be a deliberate statement. And it’s wildly tone deaf or him to act like hatred doesn’t exist.

But this is almost nothing new for him or the band as a whole so I dunno.

Maynard's a smart guy...if he didn't want to get twisted into a political narrative he wouldn't have put on fake tits and lipstick in Florida (and only Florida, I might add). Otherwise do the mohawk thing for the billionth time. The wishy-washy statement after the fact was silly and really unnecessary. Disappointing but Maynard does as Maynard does...just seems like a missed opportunity.

Of course Maynard can do whatever he wants. Doesn't mean I can't be disappointed. While of course there's a time & place for choosing to make or not make a political statement, both as a public figure & for people like us in our personal lives, he injected himself into this part. situation w/the choice to wear drag. It's not like he doesn't know what's going on down there. So to do that, but then pull back when asked about it, is cowardly. For a grown man who is very clear on his own politics to obfuscate like that is cowardly. Part. in today's climate where EVERYTHING is political. As such, stand up for yourself. I might not force my extremely left wing & "woke" political views on people in my life, but if you ask me something I wouldn't sugarcoat my answer.

LOL I just googled around and it seems that it will likely be a tour but who knows. If it is, I’ll have to decide if I want to go, seeing as I saw them twice pretty recently - once in 2019 and once in 2020

Right? Except I live in AZ - isn’t that where Maynard lives? so AZ is almost a guaranteed stop.

    BOOM!

Not sure if these are actually assigned seats or if this will be GA/Pit, but if they're assigned seats, I'm on the floor, center stage right in front of the mixing board. If they're GA, I'm pit for the second night in Toronto.

I'm pretty psyched to be seeing Tool on Halloween in St. Paul! During the presale yesterday, I got tickets in row 27 with some Friends, but my FOMO got the better of me and I decided to splurge on a "7EMPEST" VIP ticket in row 14 so I could be closer and get the lanyard, physical ticket, and merch package. I didn't really care about the rest of the VIP stuff (though soundcheck would be awesome) and I wasn't going to spend $650-880 on any of the higher VIP tiers. I remember wishing I had gone to the Wisconsin Halloween show back in 2019 when Adam wore that AMAZINGLY realistic Dwight costume, so this felt like a special one-of-a-kind show that merits spending more to be closer (and some merch and memorabilia to commemorate it). I just wish I didn't have to be alone while my less diehard friends are 13 rows behind me on the opposite side of the floor (I'll be on the left while they're on the right side), but I'm super excited none the less!

Also, we accidentally wound up with ONE spare ticket in section FLRR, row 18 if anyone is interested. I'd sell for what I paid, which is $180. PM me if you're interested.

Settled for nosebleeds. At $125 CDN that's about as high as I'm willing to go. Never got the chance to see them, the stars never quite aligned right, so looking forward to it.

I’ve found there are rarely bad seats at Tool shows so you should be fine. Last tour, I was in nosebleeds basically at the right hand side of the stage and it was amazing.

Edit: Unless you’re dead set on bumping up against other people and standing the entire time, buying floor tickets aren’t gonna be any better.

How did I never know about these lyrics in Eulogy (whispered)?

“Warn while some child might chill, nine-one-two
I'm too smart when you're invisible by the bone symbol on you
So he bashes his skull through the window while looking out to the sea
    Like torment of my ego
    And we're amused by this”

    Because those aren't the lyrics!

There've been a thousand guesses spreading across the internet since 1996. No one knows what he says.

Same for No Quarter. I haven't even seen guesses for that one.

Oh wow, this is so Tool-alike (especially in the first half) that Justin's participation seems almost tongue in cheek. Or I guess this is simply a band that so takes heavily from Tool (I haven't yet listened to their other stuff, but surely I will).

Also, am I the only one that whenever I see a new comment in this Tool thread, I think "what overpriced crap are they trying to sell now"?

Night Verses is very inspired my Tool, like many, but they have their own distinct sound. I can see the tongue and cheek outlook, but I see it more as an homage. Definitely check out their other stuff, they used to have a full time vocalist!
