I don't have an answer for that but I just have to say that I'm glad to see another The The fan on these boards.

Matt Johnson was seriously overlooked, and The The should have sold just as many records as Depeche Mode. They were very close those Some Bizarre bands, Matt, He was a real proto British Trent Reznor character in the 1980's, elusive genius in the press with much respect and sold loads of records, extremely talented, one man band, multi instrumentalist, with a real songwriting gift, a dark reputation, who made synth/aggressive pop music. He was a much better lyricist however, he had a real gift with lyrics Matt did.*

Soul Mining was the best, he was 20, insane, Burning Blue Soul has an incredible atmosphere to it, *but loved Infected and Pornography of Despair and some of Johnny Marr's work on Dusk, After Dusk he sort of just gave up, and vanished and Depeche Mode sold out stadiums, its odd how they broke huge in the U.S and The The didnt. I dont think Matt gave a shit to be honest.
But respect to Depeche Mode they always supported people they idolized. They also brought Wire, Fad Gadget and Primal Scream out with them too.

EDIT -.... Oh well, i can dream .......who the fucK is that GUY????? please come back other Matt anyway.

So Dave is doing lead on every track?

edit: apparently so. Amazing! Almost like another solo record.

P.S. - I'm just getting into the Spock / Single Blip stuff from VCMG now. Really looking forward to the full album 'Ssss' soon! Should leak soon too I think.

Soulsavers release their new album 'The Light The Dead See' through Cooperative Music/V2 Records on 21st May. Featuring vocals and lyrics by Dave Gahan, the record is the follow-up to 2009's critically acclaimed album 'Broken'. Recorded at various locations and mastered at Abbey Road, the record will be available on CD, LP and as a download.
"There was no real script," says the laconic Rich Machin of the extraordinary fourth album 'The Light The Dead See', a set of songs of majesty and momentum. "It just rolled and rolled; it was effortless." Yet the writing was on the wall from the moment Dave Gahan stepped in to tackle vocal duties that this was going to be something very special. "We realised we were coming from the same place in so many ways," adds Machin. "He's really laid himself bare on this record, his performances are astonishing: he really is a terrific singer." Says Gahan, "Everything about it was relatively unplanned, surprising: a magical thing. We were a perfect match and I'm very, very excited about this record."
Gahan's lyrics and melodies came to him with spontaneity and passion. "About five songs in, I realised I was writing outside myself. I was having a go at myself, to be honest: my questions around faith, and God, or the lack thereof at any given moment. Sometimes I'm full of faith, but there are always questions. And I struggle with letting go of control of what's going on around me. This album became very therapeutic. No restrictions. Coming out of getting sick myself, I found I HAD to get this stuff out of me. This music gave me the perfect palate to play with the BIG questions that we all ask when life becomes less about what can we GET, than: what can we DO? I've been very fortunate, and I'm privileged in my life, so I want to do things I feel really connected to now, otherwise there's no point. Rich and I had both come out of something difficult. This is something to do with that. It was a wonderful experience."
'The Light The Dead See' track listing:
    1. La Ribera
    2. In The Morning
    3. Longest Day
    4. Presence of God
    5. Just Try
    6. Gone Too Far
    7. Point Sur Pt.1
    8. Take Me Back Home
    9. Bitterman
    10. I Can't Stay
    11. Take
    12. Tonight

Yeah, it's a bit unclear about Dave's contribution with Soulsavers, but at the moment everything points to him being the main vocalist for the whole album! They've used Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees) in the past with guests such as Mike Patton and Gibby Haynes. The first album had jazz musician Josh Haden on it....... so yeah, it seems like Dave's the man this time around! Weird!

As for VCMG - very much what both Mart and Vince are into these days, the sound doesn't surprise me at all. I dig Martin's contribution to Motor's "Man Made Machine" too.

I'm not sure how I feel about that... It'll probably be good, but I really liked Mark Lanegan doing the vox for Soulsavers

God, Lanegan did do a great job, didn't he? I love that album. I think Gahan plus the Soulsavers sounds like an amazing, amazing idea on paper, so I have high hopes for the album. Dave's got a low gravely (when it wants it) baritone, just like Lanegan, and to me it seems to have gained gravity with age. Some of the vocals on his last solo album were unbelievable, "Deeper and Deeper," comes to mind.

    What?

Have you not heard "Nothing's Impossible", "Suffer Well", or "Come Back"?

"Crap Dave songs", he says. Surely he's never witnessed this:

Well shit, that song's not that bad. Sounds like a Paper Monsters outtake though. I see this album as Soulsavers with Dave along for the ride, not Dave and a back-up band. (Sorta like the JXL song or maybe what TR did with Josh Wink.)

I actually like the mixture of Dave's songs with Martin's these days on the albums. (OK fine, PTA more than SOTU, but still.) "Come Back" was ruined by production and a bit too long, but stuff like "Nothing's Impossible" and "Oh Well" are solid DM songs.

^ I agree and I think Come Back is great although haven't listened in a while. I turn that album on every now and then but usually just listen to Fragile Tension, Peace or Perfect.

    Yeah, kinda cheesy.

I hope at least one of the tracks is as amazing as 'Nostalgia'

If you've got "I Need You" in a slipcase, it's worth the most, not as many of them went out. I've seen the other slipcases (empty) offered anywhere from €15-€25... so maybe €30 for "I Need You." With CD's? Not much more, the discs are pretty easy to find.

Incidentally, I need the cases for "Bottle Living" & "Dirty Sticky Floors"..... was about to trade on depmod but hey, if you're looking to get rid of them.... well, PM me.

Some of you guys are really particular or something about your music, hehe. :P I love that Longest Day song and also I heard someone say they'll "never forgive them for Peace" ??? That's an amazing song, I sat here and sang that main melody to myself and don't understand what would be bad about it. Never heard Nostalgia, either, but that is a damn good song so thank you for sharing.

I agree with everyone who says Sounds of the Universe was amazing. Favorite tracks were Fragile Tension, Little Soul, In Sympathy, Come Back, Peace, Perfect and Miles Away.

Loved Playing The Angel.... Pain That I'm Used To, John The Revelator, Suffer Well, Precious, Macro, Nothings Impossible, Damaged People, Lilian...

Love all their stuff, though, really... Construction Time Again, Music For The Masses, Violator, Black Celebration and Songs Of Faith and Devotion.. some of my favorite albums ever.

The thing about Come Back is that there are versions to suit everybody, and all of them pretty easily available to find in good quality.

The demo version: more stripped down electronic and direct (possibly my favourite version for it's stereo panning work and general colder tone)

The album version: big brash & dirty, purposefully in-your-face desperate & yearning.

The 'studio sessions' version: cleaner & more soulful with room for the more subtle spot effects to breathe

Dave Gahan's 2007 Hourglass demo version: If anything a more mid-period DM sounding version than the final album one.

Gotta love a bit of Come Back action!

Edit: I forgot the mono Ch3 rip of the vocal track from the 5.1 that is actually pretty good in it's own way. Very clean clear vocals but just some of the distorted guitar & spot work leaking through the same channel.

I think "Peace" is a great song in the studio. It however, was pretty damn weak live. The intro was one of the few goosebumps moments during my first listen-through of SOTU in fact, so yeah, to each his own right.

Always thought this was a great fan-mix:
