I do like that Camilla Cabello song "Havana". It's catchy. Yet, I'm baffled by some of the things in pop as I saw a singer named Poppy or something. The song was good but I was distracted by what she was wearing as if she was a big flower or a sun or some shit. I'm like "what the fuck is going on?"

i really love both singles she's released. i also thought that the artwork for the "havana" single was the best cover art of 2017:

re: poppy. i think it's just some really insipid performance art? i don't know as i'm 37, but i don't think it's anything to take seriously as it'll leave the pop lexicon any minute now.

This new Justin Bieber song ‘yummy’ is so bland with its style, it’s a shame because I liked his ‘sorry’ era, one of my boys got really into it and it grew on me. This song is just gibberish with an occasional trap beat

I can't say I've been closely following the contemporary pop scene, though I've not been too distant from it. Ariana Grande is currently the only mainstream pop performer I've been following (and one of the few I actually like, along with Dua Lipa and probably some others). I don't want to be one of those narrow-minded hipsters or rock/metal purists who dismiss all pop music as crap simply because it's pop, preferring to at least try to listen to the artists' music before making conclusive statements about them, so I'd like to get a clearer idea of who some of the least worst performers making hits these days are.

I've learned to really love pop. Not so much the modern years, but I can really get into the stuff from the 90s/early 2000's that I hated growing up. I enjoy discovering stuff I may not have heard too. Like this track...samples Gary Numan's "Are Friends Electrick" , so cool:

I really like a lot of pop music, but I'm deeply bored with it right now. The pop stations on Apple music seem to be dominated by slow jams are the moment, which I have never cared for.

I hated "Old Town Road" but I've liked all the other singles Lil Nas X has released (Panini, Rodeo etc). Wish he would release some new stuff already, he keeps teasing stuff on Twitter but I'm guessing Covid has put a lot of releases on hold.

I'm bummed that we didn't get more mileage out of the short 80's synth pop revival that blew up on top 40 for a while. Taylor Swift's "Style", Carly Rae's "Run Away With Me" and Charli XCX's "Boom Clap" are still my absolute jams. I'd kill for more of that in the pop scene.

Ari's most recent release is fine, but I'm underwhelmed.

I've been enjoying this one quite a bit this year. Certainly not going to be up most people's alley:

It's good to see Victoria Justice finally shake off the bubblegum pop of her Nickelodeon days with her first single in seven years. She definitely has enough potential to cross over to the mainstream and become one of the better contemporary pop performers.

New animated video for an unreleased BLACKPINK song.

Been waiting for new music from BP, specifically, before bumping this thread after having gotten myself addicted to k-pop last year. I like BP's mix of pop, hip-hop, and electronic music (standard for k-pop in general, but not necessarily arranged in the same way) combined with their heavenly voices. I strongly prefer it over most American pop from the last few decades. I also prefer British pop to American pop, to a lesser extent, but I associate it mainly with 80s synthpop. For years I assumed that k-pop was simply the Korean counterpart to j-pop (which itself, admittedly, I'm not very familiar with; I think j-pop pretty much only acknowledged outside of Japan by hardcore anime nerds), but its increasing presence on the internet, putting a lot of effort in the uphill battle for major international recognition, is quite impressive.

And here is a video to prove that not all k-pop is BTS.

[And yes, I'm well aware that k-pop tends to be a magnet for scandals and toxic fans, but the American industry is not much better.]

I think it's great that we dedicated a whole thread to U2s best album!
