Finally saw Enemy last night starring Jake Gyllenhaal and loved it. Right up my alley: dark, abstract, ambiguous - the works. It was directed by Denis Villeneuve, who did Prisoners as well (which I also loved). I now really have to see Incendies...
Edge of Tomorrow. Really enjoyed this movie. The aliens aren't that great and some of the rules established within the movie world get broken, but that doesn't matter too much. There's an undercurrent of dark humor throughout and some clever writing.
Went on a bit of a bender with some Pedro Almodovar films: All About My Mother, Talk to Her, and Volver. Good stuff. I spent a summer in Spain once upon a time and his films make me want to go back.
Just getting into Orange Is The New Black.
I watched all of True Detective in the space of 24 hours this past week. No regrets.
Rewatching Hannibal season 1 as I'm showing it to a friend of mine.
Rewatched the last stretch of episodes from season 1 of Dexter as I've been introducing someone to it, and will probably end up seeing some of season 2 again because of them (I think I've seen the first season of Dexter close to five or six times now).
Saw Dallas Buyers Club and understood all the hype. Great fuckin' film.
Just started Game of Thrones today; I remember reading the books years ago and just ended up missing the show for years now, finally went ahead and started. Only seen 2 episodes but both were really enjoyable and I'm looking forward to seeing the rest.
Went to see 22 Jump Street yesterday; enjoyed it more than the first one, had a lot of good laughs and the meta humor was appreciated. That said the middle of it really dragged for a bit and just had little humor, but it picked up far quicker than I think the first did. These movies have no right to be as funny as they are.
Saw Edge of Tomorrow last weekend actually, really loved it and had more fun watching that than I have with a lot of movies so far this year. Just a big, fun action movie that doesn't take itself too seriously and has great performances from Cruise and Blunt. Shame it's not that popular in the US, but it's killing it overseas and that's a good thing.
two of my bandmates came over last night and we watched The People Under The Stairs. i think it's the first time we've all watched a movie together which my fiancee is the only one who has seen it before. we were all laughing about it because the rest of us are such movie buffs.
anyway, the movie was great. i love middle-period wes craven. funny without sacrificing the scary, well-acted, interesting story, fantastic score. highly recommended.
Re-watching the Showtme series Dexter from the beginning. One of my favorite shows ever, even with the last season ending.
This is probably my favorite Dexter tribute ever. Contains spoilers:
I saw the Fault in our Stars
Finally watched the Broken film. That was fun.
caught up on marvel films through Thor 2 (which was awesome; as was Iron Man 3, by far the best of the Iron Man films).
how many episodes of Agents of SHIELD are we supposed to watch before we watch Captain America 2 and then finish the show?
A Scanner Darkly: I think people were generally 'meh' on this, but I quite liked it. Its sticks to the Phillip K. Dick book pretty well, the animation looks great, and Robert Downey Jr. and Woody Harrelson make for some entertaining druggies. Keanu's downward spiral wasn't depicted that well, though. I think he only used like 2-3 times in the whole movie.
I'm watching True Blood season 4 at the moment too. I'd forgotten what a ludicrously porny show it is.
watched today for my friend's birthday.
after you watch the trailer, you'll understand why it's so funny that we made him this cake:
Slowly making my way through Rectify. I've heard so many great things about this show but, honestly, I'm three episodes in and it's pretty boring. I don't mind slow, necessarily, but this just isn't keeping my interest very well. The first and third episode were pretty meh (especially the third), the second one felt like it was finally starting to get better but then the third one just totally let me down. Only three more episodes to go for season one. I'll probably finish out the season but I don't know if I will end up watching any more of it after that.
Also, finally got around to watching True Detective. Finally. I have been looking forward to it for so long. The first episode was just ok but I am absolutely going to stick with it and give it a chance. I do really enjoy the interaction between the two main characters ("Let's make the car a place of silent reflection from now on.")
I also just started Terriers. I've heard great things about it for years, plus one of the executive producers was Shawn Ryan (creator of The Shield, god among men). I'm in the middle of the third episode now but, again, it's just ok. It's keeping my interest, but so far it's absolutely nothing special. I'm not hoping for amazing here, but it would be nice if it was at least better than average.
Finally, I saw 22 Jump Street over the weekend. I felt it was exactly as good as the first- thoroughly enjoyable but nothing special, somewhat funny throughout with a few really hilarious scenes here and there. And there were definitely a few scenes in this movie that were just hysterical. Ice Cube steals the movie (which isn't shocking since I remember him being really funny in the first one). He is in the best scene of the whole film.

I work with an insufferable hippie (not Johnbron) who talks about "the world government" and "when I was following the Grateful Dead around". I think I'm going to have to use this line.

It's a slow build.
Give me a thumbs up or down please. I was thinking about getting thru this series too, but really I need to stop watching a screen and start reading again.
Keep going. I think the characters are better than the story - never been a Mcconaughey fan, but his performance here was pretty good. Sort have won me over the way Brad Pitt won me over in Snatch.
Alien and Aliens on Blu-ray, terrifying and beautiful as ever in that format.
I'm finally checking out True Detective. I've seen the reviews and saw what people said on here and i'm really excited about it.
Just got back from The Rover.
I loved it. Maybe my favorite film of 2014 thus far. Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson kill it. Nice to see Scoot McNairy, too, who's great in a supporting role. The acting is top-notch, the cinematography amazing (some notable use of flickers/strobes), and the score beautifully bleak, just like the narrative. I really need to re-watch Animal Kingdom now...
Been watching lots of Everybody Loves Raymond reruns lately.
I miss Peter Boyle.
