think I was mostly fixated on a few bands as a kid, so I missed a lot.

I can relate. For years and years it was an almost steady diet of Manson, NIN, Pumpkins, KMFDM and Bauhaus for my ears. When I explore a band, I really explore a band, and it takes months. Only once in college did I add Bowie, The Sisters of Mercy, Pink Floyd, the Beatles...university saw me discover Killing Joke, Siouxsie and The Cure many years after only knowing Disintegration, all of whom shot to near the top of my all-time favorite bands list, impacteing me in a way I didn't think anything really could have past high school. I'm currently exploring U2, My Bloody Valentine, among others. At least it's never too late to start.

was listening to Death of Lovers' EP "buried under a world of roses" this morning, and i got to my parents' house to find that their new LP had arrived on vinyl! can't wait to play it later.

Free Salamander Exhibit - Undestroyed

Big fan of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, so I thought I'd check this out. Guitarist Drew Wheeler basically brought most of the SGT members together (and, hey, David Shamrock's back into the fold!). Three tracks in and so far I'm enjoying it. It feels like SGT-lite, with a cleaner, less chaotic and more subdued sound. Carla Kihlstedt's absence is strongly felt, since her soaring vocals provided a great counterpoint against Nils Frykdahl's growls. She's still active in the music projects Rabbit Rabbit Radio, Causing a Tiger etc. (what is it with animals in their band names?) with her husband Matthias Bossi (aka SGT's final drummer, aka the guy who co-scored the game The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth).

FSE does not capture the incredibly huge and breathtakingly operatic vibe of the SGT discography, but they're not trying to, either; they're simply having fun doing what they know best: expertly played avant-prog with all sorts of homemade instruments and head-scratchingly surreal lyrics and song structures. Even their logo is a crude redrawing of the SGT logo. It feels like a fresh new start for the band; not one without growing pains, but a promising one. Also, nice to see them join Trey Spruance's label Web of Mimicry; they should feel right at home with the Secret Chiefs 3 crowd.

Yep. From 1994-2000 I feel like I only really listened to NIN, Pumpkins, Nirvana, Radiohead, Beck, Weezer and They Might Be Giants. Some radio hit bands would filter in and out pretty quickly but I pretty much stuck to those bands since they were reliable and CDs were too expensive to be risky about; I did get into Subliminal Sandwich by MBM due to the Nothing connection, and I did listen to some jazz music since I was in band at school but those were the focus for me. I finally branched out into indie music (Microphones, Jim O'Rourke's pop/rock records, early Pinback, Stereolab, Tortoise, His Name Is Alive, earlier Modest Mouse, Aimee Mann due to Magnolia, eventually Sonic Youth), some classic rock (didn't hear Bowie until 2000 despite numerous plugs by Trent, Talking Heads, Velvet Underground). By 2001, I was discovering more and more music on the internet, and also making a lot of my own music and listening to friends' music.
