Store all your love for Zappa and The Mothers here.
The newly released Carnegie Hall shows are amazing. Have not stopped listening.

"hot rats" is one of my most-played albums. my dad first played it for me when i was about 7 (around the same time he showed me "in the court of the crimson king"), and i was hooked from there.
i also listen to "roxy and elsewhere" in my car quite often...though fast-forwarding through all the talking gets a bit tedious while i'm trying to drive.

i saw the first two performances of Zappa Plays Zappa here in chicago, but i haven't seen them again since. both shows were pretty incredible.

The only thing from Frank Zappa I'm familiar with is "Watermelon in Easter Hay". There's a few other songs I've heard.

Yet, I have no idea which record to start with.

it depends on where your tastes lie...if you want jazzier stuff, go with an album like hot rats...if you want more rock-oriented material, go with something like apostrophe, over-nite sensation, or one size fits all. if you want weirder stuff, go with chunga's revenge, or any number of other albums. the man released so much music it's kind of insane.

Picking some where to start listening to Zappa is pretty hard because of the many different styles he went through.
The only thing I can thing of is to start at the beginning. Listen to the first Mother's albums, Freak Out!, Absolutely Free, & We're Only in It for the Money.
Than there's Hot Rats & Chunga's Revenge. Much more like classic rock albums but still very zappa.
Waka/Jawaka & The Grand Wazoo are is big band/ jazz albums.
Over-Nite Sensation & Apostrophe(') I call his radio friendly albums.
I'm not really a fan of the rest of his 70's out put, Zoot Allures, Sleep Dirt, or Studio Tan. And I loose interest when he starts doing the Synclavier stuff as I love the actual band sound.

Which brings me to his Live albums where I believe his music really comes to life. As there are many sections where they improvise and the bands talent really shines. You haven't really heard his music unless you've heard them play it live so this albums are a must.

Fillmore East – June 1971: Famous for the Story of The Mud Shark. It's basicly a live concept album, mainly about touring and groupies, extremely funny.
Zappa in New York features music from Zoot Allures. Amazing performance.
You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore, Vol. 2 is the whole show from Helsinki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freak_Out%21) in 1974, Probably the greatest playing you'll ever hear on a record, it's quite breath taking.
Philly '76 Another great performance from the Zoot Allures era. Featuring Lady Bianca.
And than the recent Carnegie Hall (1971) performances are superb! The best to feature Eddie & Flo.

Zappa also made orchestra work later on. The Yellow Shark was the album he was probably most satisfied with. His other endeavors with other orchestras did not fare so well, however. He thought his work with the London Symphony Orchestra was a disaster. He said in his book he did a lot of studio trickery to get it to work as an album. Zappa claimed the orchestra wasn't prepared for the difficulty of the material and they apparently came in drunk to do the performance.

Anyway, check this one out. Probably one of my favorites from Yellow Shark:

I got into Zappa about 2 years ago. He is awesome. I have: 'The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life', 'The Grand Wazoo' and 'Just Another Band From LA'. I think my favorite song of his is Blessed Relief. I should start collecting his stuff.

Sheik Yerbouti is fucking awesome. "Broken Hearts are for Assholes" alone makes it worth getting.

This is the very first time I ever played "Watermelon In Easter Hay." It was very challenging to play on many levels. It has always been a highly emotional song for me. Matching my father's phrasing is very difficult as well.

Can't think of a better first post of 2014. I found this Sunday and it just blew me away. It's continuing to do so. I can close his eyes and hear his dad playing this. He'd be so proud.
