Don't get it. TMV are much better. To me ATDI was like a cut'n'paste mix of Fugazi and RATM. Lots of energy, but no identity. I really don't understand why such progressive musicians would take this seemingly regressive step. ATDI's narrow framework shackled these guys, TMV set them free, giving them the opportunity to soar.

Gray Grimez

I couldn't disagree more with the above post, To me the mars volta are the much more regressive of the two, essentially just a prog band. And a prog band with highly diminishing returns, first two albums were great, but since then? Not so much. And being someone of the age who was just going to shows as they split up it'll be amazing to finally see them.

Course all this pales in comparison to the fact that.

Remember when Refused ripped off Nation of Ulysses and The Make Up and made an entire career out of it?

01-10-2012, 09:10 AM
Oh please, Nation Of Ulysses didn't have a "Shape of Punk to Come" in them. And honestly, Refused can bite whoever, if they can take that influence and then produce something like THAT again..

Kid Charlemagne
01-10-2012, 11:19 AM
Hardly the thread for it, but Refused made not just one of the best "punk" albums, it was one of the best period. That album still manages to overwhelm me like it did when I first heard it in high school. Same with Source Tags and Codes and Relationship of Command.

As ATDI goes, TMV is overrated. It's always sounded like prog wankery to me and neither Cedric or Omar can self edit. I like Sparta, but that probably has more to do with the fact that I've known Jim Ward since 2007 and e-mail each other periodically and puts me on the guest list each time Sleepcar performs or he does a solo show. In other words, I like Sparta, but I'm aware why people think they suck. Where they found a middle ground to make ATDI, I have no idea, but it's going to be fun singing along to these songs again.

Also, welcome back pigpen!

At The Drive-In will not record new music; the reunion is for nostalgia...and money. (http://www.pitchfork.com/news/45517-no-new-at-the-drive-in-music-sorry/)

I kind of admire them for coming out and saying that it's a cash grab. Most bands wouldn't do that. It was probably fairly obvious too considering there's a new Mars Volta album coming out and Jim said he's getting Sparta back together. Someday.

Anyone in Texas been able to catch them on their small shows they're doing this week? Someone posted a video on youtube of Napoleon Solo but the person is outside along with other people that weren't able to get in. They're just listening and singing along outside in the alley. It sounded pretty good. I hope their set will be part of Coachella's webcast on Sunday.

They've explicitly said that they won't be making new material at all. They're just getting back together to play these live shows and then that's it. And quite frankly I don't think I'd want a new album from them. They're all in different places musically now, and I know Cedric doesn't like that type of music anymore. I'm ok with Relationship Of Command forever being their last album. Because honestly, it can't get much better than that, anyway.

yeah he said some funny stuff. he just wasnt taking his vocal performance seriously during the earlier part of the set, then he spit on the camera as if thats cool, etc. overall he was fine. that was a fucking short set though. would MUCH rather wait to see a full set than deal with the nonsense at something like Coachella. streaming the whole thing is a really really cool idea though.

Yeah I do kind of agree about him half assing his vocals during the first song or two, but I don't know, the sheer excitement of being able to watch that made me not really care. The set was unbelievably slow though. I would have been so upset to be at Coachella and get that short of set. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe Refused's HEADLINE set on Friday was way longer. And I love both of those bands immensely, but I feel it should have maybe been the other way around?

I bought my Lolla tickets the other day and I'm really hoping ATDI get's a full headline slot like they're billed for. That'd make my year.

I thought it was a good set. In Austin last week they played for an hour, so it wasn't vastly different. Omar didn't sound too good, but they made the most of it considering it was a small crowd for them, with half of them being there waiting for Dre and Snoop and maybe the first five rows were actually there for ATDI. It wasn't the intense show I thought it would be, but it was worth my time, I had a great time singing and prancing around to songs I've loved for about 12 years.

I wouldn't say it was awful but it didn't sound too great either. He can't scream like he used to, or maybe doesn't want to. He sang like he does now for The Mars Volta, all high pitched which is fine, maybe screaming takes too much of a toll on his throat now. Either way I really enjoyed it.

"Alpha Centauri", "Napoleon Solo", "Shaking Hand Incision", "A Devil among Sailors", the difference is mostly the production, the sound is "less polished" and more "hardcore" it's also a bit more Punk than ROC

No sir, just regular ATDI shirts, I was scoping them at Coachella, but it's just the same boombox shirt but it's orange.

As for the Refused shirts, those were just for Ponoma apparently. The ones from Coachella had nothing indicating the reunion. Though I did get one saying "We're Taking the Airwaves Back"

I'm not even surprised when broken up bands get back together anymore. I'm on the line as to whether it's a good idea or not. You have situations like Swans where it works out brilliantly and they expand on the legacy of the band. And then you have something like ATDI which seems so forced and uninteresting compared to the original iteration.

I was hoping for Antemasque follow-up album :(

Well Antemasque, to me anyway, was the sound of what an older, more mature ATDI would be doing anyway. So I would imagine they will sound fairly similar in sound. But I too was looking forward to another Antemasque album too, especially since at some point they said they had enough material recorded for TWO albums!

Here's a new interview (http://www.fuse.tv/2016/01/at-the-drive-in-interview-new-music-tour-dates-exclusive) with Omar and Tony about the big new ATDI announcement.

I really enjoy the new song! It's energetic, fun, has strange turns of phrase that only Cedric can deliver and sounds exactly like what ATDI should sound like.

But it's getting a lot of hate on social media and extra saltiness about the lack of Jim Ward. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The problem with bands like ATDI and Refused reuniting and continuing is that for many people, their music is tied to a youthful energy and rebellion. A flashpoint of emotion in your life that an older you, try as you might, will never recapture. Because of that, anything these guys do afterward will never stack up because it doesn't have all of those same great associations or the ferocity of youth. Plus they're not angry young men anymore either. They're...angry middle aged men, lol.

So if you're hyped, welcome aboard what will probably be a very fun record. If not, bypass and just keep listening to your old records and don't worry about this. A healthy, intelligent discussion is one thing. But when people on social media and such spend so much time and energy bashing something, it just feels like such a waste and I feel sorry for them. I'd rather focus on the things that I do enjoy and that do make happy.

I think every band suffers from this, to an extent. The thing is, you see a regular band evolve album after album, they're less and less what they were, and so are you, and you get accustomed to their evolution.
When bands reunite after such a long while, all that evolution happens more or less behind the scene, the identity of the band has changed in the very eyes of the band members and you never got to witness that. So when they come back and deliver new music under the old moniker, the dissonance is all the more jarring... Imagine Bowie going from Outside straight to Blackstar, or Radiohead from OK Computer to A Moon Shaped Pool, NIN from The Downward Spiral to Hesitation Marks. Obviously the fans are going to be pissed off and feel cheated.

Loving the new material so far. Seems like they haven't really missed a step here at all and that is pretty impressive. But I would really like a new Mars Volta album :/. I just recently started getting into Omar's material and most is hit and miss for me so far, but dam, he has TONS on material to brush through.

Yeah, for the most part I've been enjoying all this other stuff but TMV is still the main dish for me. It looks like they plan to bring Volta back eventually so I'm just trying to enjoy what we're being given in the meantime. I will say this latest ATDI song has got me Volta-level excited though, hopefully the rest of the album is as good. Omar's material is definitely hit or miss but really, at least a third of his discography are really great albums, which is still more than most bands ever release. There are at least a few that are Volta level, in my opinion. So it's definitely worth going through.

oof. nocturniquet is so boring. it suffers from the same issue that so many of my favorite bands have run into, where they put out an incredible and innovative album ("octahedron") followed by something uninspired & uninteresting, which i find impossible to connect to emotionally.

what about it drew you in that the other albums didn't have? i'm genuinely curious because you're typically very discerning and i find it interesting that you like the album everyone else seems to dislike.

Both me and my bandmate agree it is hands down the best Mars Volta album... and we've been on the same page about the rare moments where they knocked it out of the park before, and we both like At the Drive In better overall (but admittedly, when Relationship of Command was blowing up, we were both skeptical about whether or not people were overblowing the album's greatness).

All of that would seem strange, given that we're all about strange or unconventional/psychedelic stuff... I myself am all about that. It's part of why I was so shocked by how much I hated Deloused in the Crematorium. It bored me to tears, I hated the slick production, and I felt like the songs were pathetically aping true psych/prog rock. Follow up records were better, but I felt like they were smashing psychedelic washes of atonal garbage to mask the lack of songwriting...

Then I heard The Malkan Jewel off Noctourniquet, and it made me go back and reconsider everything I'd thought about Mars Volta. Like, maybe great self-contained songs like The Widow weren't anomalies.... maybe they were actually crafting some great stuff that I was missing because I was over-hearing the production swash. In my re-appraisal, it's a steady upward trajectory of quality, peaking with Nocturniquet, but that still being the only album from them that I've been excited about. Or maybe Francis the Mute had enough going for it that it was an early peak, but it isn't a contest...

Mars Volta felt indulgent to me at first, "rebound sex" after the breakup of the band. It seemed unfocused, and at the same time showy... as if to say "see, now we don't have those pop dorks making us do cookie cutter rock, now we're FREEEEEE" to make some really meandering audio soup. I saw them live three times, and I always wanted to understand the love for their live show, and the music in general. At one show I took my earplugs out because it sounded like a "shreds" video, and then it just sounded like blaring distortion.

They came across to me as a band that was overreaching to be called technically fascinating and adventurous, but I didn't think they were actually that exciting. Nocturniquet changed my mind about them really, but mostly because I felt it actually had some incredible song structure, and it wasn't so wailing and showy. It wasn't trying to impress you with how avant-garde it was, it was just a good album.

I guess the push back from that is that fans of what they were doing before found it to be pedestrian and restricted. I get that...

Damn, I actually feel the complete opposite. Like Octahedron was them trying to do a new sound but not quite getting there, and then they perfected it and pushed more boundaries with Noctourniquet. Mainly the incorporation of electronic elements and more melodic stuff. I think Omar also said something to a similar degree in an interview about them doing things on Noctourniquet that they were kind of afraid to do before. I also felt like it had the most emotion out of anything since Frances, the lyrics and vocals especially are beautiful and sucked me into the story of the album. Just my opinion of course. I too was very excited for Volta's future after Noctourniquet. Hopefully when LP7 eventually comes it'll be another great album.

I'd say Noctourniquet and The Bedlam in Goliath took the longest to grow on me, compared to the other MV records. There's a handful of songs from Noctourniquet that are so awesome-- Empty Vessels, the title track, Zed and Two Naughts, Aegis, In Absentia... as for Bedlam, I remember listening to it all the way through for the first time, and thinking it was way too chaotic and incoherent. However, after a bunch of listens, I ended up loving it heaps. I think the crazy and busy nature of the songs is what makes it so fucking cool, the band went further off into the deep end with the album, and it works fantastically. Tracks like Cavalettas, Metatron, Goliath and Ilyena are standouts for me.

Octahedron is another album that I felt was a bit underwhelming at first, but gradually began to love over time. I guess listening to it after the craziness of Bedlam was jarring. There's some really underrated songs on there, like Teflon and With Twlight As My Guide. The whole band, especially Cedric, shines on it. The more restrained and reflective side of TMV is brilliant.

Album is out and is fucking awesome. Really surprised, still wish Jim Ward was in the band...I wonder what happened?

For real. Excited to see them live now, b/c I want to hear the new songs too! Really didn't think they could put out a record this good again.
