View Full Version : If you could ask Reznor one question what woud it be?

I posted in the NPR interview thread about how I wished Reznor would do an AMA on reddit. AMA = Ask Me Anything, the chance for individuals to ask their questions. Fans would come up with some original and much deeper questions than we have seen in most interviews. Though if it went the route of the Digg Dialog that he did there would just be some lame tapeworm questions :P

So, what would your interview question be?

I have been curious about his recent life (wife, kids, etc) and how he has adapted his high standards and need for perfection to work with that life. I have not yet found a way to phrase it without sounding insane though :)

"Can I have a job?"

I tour for a living, but he's never been a client of the company I work for. I get to work with some of the most amazing musicians in the world, but I'm still a little sad that he'll probably never be on that list for me.

Hah. I think a lot of us would ask that one. This was supposed to be an interview oriented question for a theoretical reddit AMA (actually possible since Sheridan did one and I believe mentioned that Reznor may). I should probably clarify that more.

I wouldn't be confident in my own ability quite enough to ask that (nor is my job really something he needs). Working with him would be awesome. Hell, have you seen the NIN lighting guy? http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=nin+lighting+guy

I got one. Whatever happened to that cover of Kiss' "Love Gun" you were supposed to make for that Kiss tribute album back in '94?

1. What do you think of Marilyn Manson's newer work? I know you think he's personally a 'dopey clown' (I very much agree), but how do you think that has affected his 'art'?

2. Tapeworm, duh. We all know it's long dead, but do you have any plans of working with MJK in the future? I can't imagine how unbelievably rad that would be.

3. Do you ever look back at your earlier work and think, "Wow. What a fucking idiot I was for thinking that was good art."?

4. What's the biggest regret of your career?

etc, etc.

I know Tapeworm is dead, but I thought I recalled hearing that MJK hopes to work with TR in the future (or vice versa). And this was fairly recent.

Didn't he just help mix Even Deeper?

Various articles from 98-99 stated that they were either talking of working together, or had worked together, and one article that I can't find atm said they had a mixtape made but it was very rough.

What happened to scupper your sound work on Doom 3 and would you consider doing a soundtrack for either an ID software game or any other?

Looks like Rob plans on doing a second AMA on reddit and probably pulling in Trent too!

@_MG_ Probably won't be for a little while, maybe when we have a new project out in the world. I'll give more of a heads-up this time.

@zenthor Funny, exactly a year ago I did one: http://t.co/6oEmyX0l - but I'd like to do another, and get TR to do one.

A bit of a ramble, but this is always something I've wondered.

I listen to music in a very "depth-first" kind-of way: I got into the Cure, and listened nearly exclusively to them for ages, digging out all the albums, hunting for b-sides, etc. - I take the same approach to other groups, and NIN is no exception.

Other people are a lot more "rounded", not just with wider tastes, but appreciating more than one of them at the same time :-)

The impression I get is that Trent falls into the latter camp, and that most "super fans" (as he calls us) would fall into the former. (most but not all, and not forever: obv. the longer you've been into NIN, the harder it would be to listen to them in exclusivity!).

My question(s) would be: does he understand that "depth-first" mentality? (I'd wager he had, because I think he's tailoring his stuff to that market.) Has he ever been like that, did he ever dig a group so much he was stuck on them? Does he have an opinion on whether each approach is good/bad, or how to widen your horizons, etc.?

Seriously: Did you ever picture yourself as a father an husband, or was it something you grew into? How much would you say that's changed your perspective on the world and on music?

HAHAHA! I still remember the day I learned about his family empire and the following day my mind being blown seeing the heater in the local mall (where I'd just moved) had REZNOR on it.

Can you play The Perfect Drug live?

Which live incarnation of NIN was his favorite one?

Obviously, the way some of NIN's older songs were played live changed quite a bit over the years. Take Terrible Lie or Head Like a Hole for example. Could he describe the changes over the years, which version felt best. Details like speed changes, or different keys the songs were played in.

Since he wrote almost all the music alone, was there ever a collaborative context (NOT tapeworm), he wished he could have played in? Maybe even just an instrument, guitar (or drums as an unexpected choice) in more of a band context.

Since NIN came up in the early 90s, how well did he know people from the (so-called) grunge scene, like Vedder, Cornell or Stayley. They must've played some festivals together, at least, so I always wondered if there were any close encounters, any plans on collaborations...

Has his way of working changed since his family life started? As in more focussed, because of less time or different approaches all together.

If NIN started in today's music industry, does he think it would have had the same impact?

Could he imagine a NIN live incarnation without him singing?
