the sister thread to the cocteau twins...the best selling act on 4AD, and another all time favorite. ethnic/world influences mixed with neoclassical and post-punk, with both a soulful baritone reminiscent of scott walker and an intense echolalia-laden female voice to balance the scales. seriously IMMENSE band. also a catch-all thread for all solo outings and soundtrack work from brendan perry, lisa gerrard, etc.

if you're already familiar with these guys, also recommed: collection d'arnell~andrea, in the nursery, black tape for a blue girl, etc.

the band has been more or less reunited since 2005, and are gearing up to record a new record due for release in 2012, the first since 1996. there are currently two free digital EPs available of live material recorded on the 2005-6 tour, entitled live happenings.

I've only got the compilation Wake (and now those free live EPs). Obviously I need to expand my collection some.

I'd add "Summoning of the Muse" and "Anywhere Out of the World" to the above awesome tracks.

My dad's always watching the DVD of these guys. Perhaps I should check it out with him sometime. :D

Heavenly Bodies (side-project of a couple of musicians involved in DCD) is freaking ace. I think I may have found it through your blog a couple years back, frank.

*Love, love* Super excited for new material. I last saw them in 1996. Reeeeeally hoping they come near enough to see them again. Need Toward the Within on dvd. Sadly, I don't even know if there is a dvd version. I watched the vhs until it was all cranky and worn out.

I love it how this band's studio material sounds just as "organic" as the live stuff. Each song sounds like a unique, ephemeral performance. I can't think of many bands that fit the same mould.

I'm a huge Dead Can Dance fan. Spleen and Ideal is one of my favorite albums.

Their debut album is ridiculously good. Loving the Garlands vibe I'm getting from a few of the tracks.

yeah, they were still underdeveloped compared to what they'd become, but that first record (and the garden of arcane delights) is some of my favorite stuff. so is garlands, for that matter.

don't let the album cover dissuade, this is actually a radio session track from 1983. same era/vibe.

The dates showed up for me. I'm in the US and crossing my fingers I can see them if they come. *swoons*

ah. maybe there was a time-delay? because now it's working for me.

and, yes, i would love to see them. it's always amazing when you get a chance to see a band that you thought had ceased to exist.

i'm a bit confused about the show here in chicago. shows at millennium park are typically free, but the cheapest pre-sale tickets are $74 each. i'm going to wait for the public sale and see if i can get lawn tickets for $25 or something.

Tickets for the Pritzker are never free. But, yeah, lawn tickets are generally cheaper.

i guess i've never been there for anything but one of their free summer shows (which are fantastic).

You mean like for Taste or the Grant Park Orchestra? I've never seen name acts in the Pritzker Pavilion for free, but I guess there are exceptions, However, now Mayor Emanuel wants to charge for seats at the band shell at Taste (which has been cut down to 4 or 5 days) so everything is changing.

This will def be a great summer night show at Pritzker, for sure.

(I kinda wish they were playing at Ravinia, instead. Sure would be a hell of a lot better for ME, haha.)

i just got lawn. $19.50/ticket up to $58 after charges for two tickets is kind of ridiculous. that's almost $20 in charges. : /
oh, well. i'm glad i'm going to see (well, hear) them.

Yeah, $100 is pretty steep, I didn't know we paid that until just now when G told me. But only $8.50 additional service charge fees, though.

i know our seats are in the first three rows, though not sure outside of that. the dcd presale guaranteed good seats, so i can imagine anything in the first three rows will be great. steep price, but we get a t-shirt, too!

We got our pre-sale fix through Jam Productions here in Chicago (we're on Jam's email list).

I sent this to one of our friends (who was at our wedding) who's 30 and has NO idea who DCD is; we told him yeah, this was a huge hit for them in the 90s.

And it's STILL really fucking good!

It's interesting that they focused more on a World vibe on this album, unlike the last, which was more alternative-rock. There was a time when both styles would appear on their albums. Now, it seems they feel the need to focus separately. This is the side of DCD I have to be in a mood to listen to. I'm not quite in that mood lately. I've got the album, though, for those times I feel it.

Haven't heard the new album, but i really like this band.

So the new album is more "Spiritchaser" than it is "Spleen and Ideal"?

i listened to it this morning and, while i liked it, i wish there had been more vocals (and any lyrics) on the entire first half of the album. the music is good but one of the things i love about DCD is how much soul both of their voices inject into it, and having so much of the (very short) album be instrumental was a bit of a let down.

Ah, yeah, I was a bit let down by that, too. Also, Lisa Gerrard's vocals just seem thin and high, and not very representative of her style. I haven't been listening to it much, I admit. (Much of my time is spent in excitement over my VNV concert coming up, and I thought it was due to that. But maybe a very good album would have overcome that.)

i absolutley love their first album from 1984..always preferred their earlier more post punk sounding material than the more 'world music' sound.

they get compared a lot for some reason, to the Cocteau Twins, they were both on 4AD records, they sound nothing alike other than the fact they both sounded unusual, had boy/girl duo who were lovers and whose singers were females with these breath-taking, huge, epic voices.

I’ve been a fan of this band since 2000 and will finally see them live for the first time in April. I will probably shed a tear, judging how powerful and emotionally charged they sound on their records, which I imagine will be intensified in person.

i saw them a few years back at Millennium Park and, despite being very far away from the stage, it was an absolutely breathtaking show (and not just because of the state of the art sound system).
