It seems that Gary picked up the "Legend" Award from ARTROCKER. The awards show is scheduled to be on Dec. 2nd at XOYO in London from 8pm to 3am. Advance tickets are available for 15 Pounds from Ticketweb, Seetickets or XOYO. Gary Numan and Ade Fenton will do a DJ set as well as have such guests as Gruff Rhys and Jim Jones Revue. It should be pretty great!

As stated here are the links to the official Numan eBay items.... http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/numanofficial/m.html?item=330645795467&sspagename=STRK%3AMESELX%3AIT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649&_trksid=p4340.l2562

I would buy one of those packages up right now if I had the spare cash to go to one of the December shows.

I remember somewhere Gary said he would be touring the US pretty soon (2012 - sometime). But I haven't heard any of the particulars yet.

I've never really listened to Numan's work. But today I decided to listen to Dead Son Rising on Grooveshark, and I'm actually REALLY liking this album. Only half way through it at the moment, but I've liked each song to far. Might have to buy this album!

Dead Son Rising is great; I'm looking forward to the next tour when he comes back to Canada. It's been 5 years since I made it to a show of his in Toronto... very sadly couldn't make it to the Pleasure Principle gig featuring his reunion with our boy Nash the Slash!

All that said, I really wish he would sell lossless downloads online... there's so much stuff I can't find on CD for anywhere near a reasonable price that I'd love to have.

Well, much as I love it, there’s a limit to how long I can run around on stage trying to look aggressive and menacing without looking like a funny little old man. A natural transition for me would be to move into film music, and it would help to be in Hollywood.

And Trent Reznor is helping out, by vouching for your visa application?
Yeah! Not bad, eh. I was really grateful to him for doing that.

Gary Numan 'The Fall Remixes' test pressing - Strictly limited and very rare!
Signed and handwritten lyric sheet by Gary Numan

Take a look at this beauty: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/330650102144?ssPageName=STRK%3AMESELX%3AIT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

Yes they've been auctioning several of those off, as well as DSR test pressings with the title track hand written. Here's Gary's response to critics:

http://www.numan.co.uk/q-a/

Why are you selling white labels on eBay? Some people think it’s greedy! Greedy? I think what everyone needs to remember is that I am a professional musician. I earn my money by selling music, either on CD, DVD or by performance, and by many associated means, such as t-shirts and so on. To sell something, either in a shop or on eBay, is what I’ve always done. I thought the white labels auction would be welcomed by fans as an opportunity to get hold of something extremely rare and unusual. Why does that make me greedy when selling a ticket or a CD does not?
When we make a vinyl album we always make a small number of white label test pressings. These are sent out to different people and they are tested on various systems to make sure the pressing is good quality. With the first DSR pressing we found it was not good quality, but you already know about that as it caused the Super Deluxe to be delayed. But, the point is, these test pressings are a very real part of the process of producing vinyl, not something knocked up to make a few quid out of fans. However, when the testing is done, they sit in a box somewhere, or in someone’s cupboard, going to waste, never to be used or seen again. One or two may find their way onto e-bay or other places, but generally they are gone forever.
We thought people would like to have them. When I was a kid the thought of having a T-Rex white label would have made me faint with joy so I do believe that fans will want them. But, we can’t give them away. Whoever we gave them to would be happy but many others who didn’t get one would be angry and no doubt write in with even more vitriolic spite than usual. So, we make them available, with a very low starting price, and let the fans decide what they are willing to pay. Nothing could be fairer. I don’t understand where the ‘greed’ feelings come from. We are offering something very rare, and asking you to reach your own price for it. If you don’t want it, don’t bid for it.

Dead Son Rising appears to have a US in-store date of tomorrow (12/6) if you're still into the plastic-discs kinda thing.
also, Hybrid is still awesome. Showed up in the car playlist yesterday by accident. Now it's at the top of the playlist on purpose.

Hybrid was my first album. Not a weak song on that one, and you get a chance to hear a lot of oldies (though in different forms from the originals). As for his actual records, I tend to think Jagged is pretty much the best thing he's done post 1994.

Yeah, I should have had it on the list. It has some great tracks ("Moral", "Crash", "You Are, You Are") I just found that it might be a little too experimental for someone entering in to Numan for the first time. It was one of my first Numan albums.

ahh, last night's post i made here disappeared. on the subject of numan's mid-period records, i found my radio station promos of i, assassin and new anger over the holiday. while they're clearly not numan's best (nor do the touch many of the other great records from the 80s), i have a soft spot for both records. i've always felt though, that numan's best material post-telekon came from collaborations----> dramatis 'love needs no disguise' and sharpe & numan's 'change your mind.'

Way to dismiss more than a dozen albums in one word, dude. You rule.

I like the stuff he's done with Ade Fenton; that guy has a talent for polishing off Numan's ideas and getting the best performances out of him, which simply didn't exist with a lot of the previous collaborations.

The following was posted to Gary's Facebook a few minutes ago.

It is with regret that we have to announce the cancellation of our planned dj performance at tonight's Bangers and Mash event in London. The promoter of this event, along with Met Parties Limited have failed to meet the contractually agreed terms and conditions with our agency F-10 and because of this, we have been left with no alternative but to cancel our participation in it. We were very much looking forward to the gig and we are bitterly disappointed that we have been forced into this position. To this end, we have been assured by our agent that further action will be taken against Met Parties Limited. to try to ensure this type of breach of contract does not happen to any other artists.

We sincerely apologise to any fans that have bought tickets for this event expecting to see us perform tonight. Anyone wishing to obtain a refund for tickets can do so by phoning Tom on 07934 931228 or by e mailing tom@bangersandmashme.com.

Berserker had (like the rest of the mid-80's Numan albums) some good tracks - This is New Love, Cold Warning and The Hunter.

Strange Charm had a few songs that I enjoyed - My Breathing, I Can't Stop, This is Love.

A few personal favorites (which some Numan fans have mixed feelings about) are Metal Rhythm and Outland. There a number of tracks that I enjoyed - Voix and America (from MR) + My World Storm, Dark Sunday and Outland (from Outland).

I know that the songs are stripped back but I was hoping they would be a little more acoustic. Granted I haven't had the chance listen watch another In Your Face set before, but I was looking forward to an acoustic version of For the Rest of My Life when I saw this listing. ....Now I want a Jagged Edge style two disc of Dead Son (Rising) to be released with an acoustic version.

Finally some good news re: the Sydney TPP DVD from Steve Malins:

Hi Ryan

thanks for your patience.

Here's the plan.

We have now mixed the audio for the Australian show.

It will be streamed on Moshcam for a year.

We then plan to release it on a dvd and we're happy to send you and the VIPs at the shows, a complementary copy.

We don't want to see fans short-changed and we're also extremely frustrated that the Australian promoter offered this DVD on the basis that
you would receive it almost immediately. We pointed this out at the time but he went ahead with the announcement, apparently after his own conversations with
Moshcam.

We then sent out the Decoders as a gesture of goodwill but I totally understand that's not what was offered.

Anyway, hopefully Gary will be touring Australia again with the new Splinter album. Perhaps you won't be surprised to hear that we will be using a different promoter.

Best regards,

Steve

Gary Numan will release a new DVD, Machine Music: The Best Of Gary Numan on 11th June 2012.

This limited edition DVD will bring together for the first time promos and some TV appearances from right across his career, including the pioneering videos made for tracks such as ‘We Are Glass’ and ‘I Die: You Die’, right up to more recent promos ‘The Fall’ (from the 2011 Dead Son Rising album) and the Battles collaboration ‘My Machines.’

The DVD will initially be sold on the Machine Music Tour which runs from late May into early June and will feature a one-off set, based around Gary Numan’s singles over the last 33 years, and material from the recent Dead Son Rising album.

Numan will be supported by Officers at all the shows except for Dublin. Their ‘On The Twelve Thrones’ album was a personal favourite of Numan’s last year: “Great melodies, powerful, dark. I’ve been waiting quite a while for something this good”.

Fans and film-makers can participate in this unique event by making visuals to be projected during a selection of tracks on the tour. These songs are ‘This Wreckage’, ‘Bombers’, ‘Berserker’, ‘Call Out The Dogs’, ‘Warriors’ and ‘Dominion Day’.

We’re looking for ideas, however abstract, that illustrate the tracks via the on-stage projection screen as part of the show – please no images of Gary Numan – these are for the staging of the shows, not promo videos.

The format is 16:9 widescreen and HD. Gary will choose the best films to be screened at all the shows on the tour. If you wish to participate in this then please send links to your films to the management contact address on www.numan.co.uk (http://www.numan.co.uk) Please don’t send us any files, as we won’t have time to look at them: we just want to see your ideas on a You Tube or Vimeo link.

Here are the confirmed ‘Machine Music’ tour dates:

Tuesday May 22nd 2012 – Leicester Academy

Wednesday May 23rd 2012 – Glasgow ABC

Thursday May 24th 2012 – Newcastle Academy

Friday May 25th 2012 – Sheffield Academy

Saturday May 26th 2012 – Dublin Button Factory

Monday May 28th 2012 – Bournemouth Academy

Tuesday May 29th 2012 – Bristol Academy

Wednesday May 30th 2012 – Cambridge Junction

Thursday May 31st 2012 – Birmingham HMV Institute

Friday June 1st 2012 – London The Forum

Saturday June 2nd 2012 – Cardiff Coal Exchange

Sunday June 3rd 2012 – Brighton Dome
This is awesome news. A comprehensive career-spanning music video collection is long overdue and a tour supporting it is a GREAT idea. Can't wait to see what Numan fans & budding filmmakers can come up with for the accompanying concert videos. I never thought we'd see the day where Numan would revitalize these old tracks! Just wish the tour would hit Toronto...

I live less than a mile from the location of Numan's "Metal" music video from 1979.

‘FILMS’ COMPETITION WINNERS ANNOUNCED http://www.numan.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Films-Comp-Logo.jpg
We are pleased to announce the winners of the recent ‘Films’ competition. All of the videos listed below will appear as stage projection visuals on the forthcoming Machine Music tour.
Dominion Day – Neil Pascoe http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGEQNSukQNI
Bombers – Richard Herrero http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5B-MbA6Sys
Berserker – Keita Lynch http://youtu.be/4p_3MC4ZdGw?hd=1
This Wreckage – George M http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X89trWDTL7k&list=UUSqzDJL5_jUKE6bjLJneLwg&index=1&feature=plcp
Call Out The Dogs – Stefano Meneghetti http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Wdu3R5m-4k&feature=youtu.be
Some of the videos we received are so good, we’ve decided to use them as stage projection visuals for other songs in the set and to this end, we have asked second placed entrant, Cale Wilbanks to create a re-edit of his This Wreckage entry for We Are Glass. George M will also be re-editing some of his work for Crazier and RIP.
We would like to thank everyone that entered the competition for the time and effort they have put into creating some really great visuals for us and we very much look forward to seeing everyone on tour.

That one is great in the way that it creates an interactive element to the female vocals and reminds one of the original Berserker "look" at the same time. It was always a bit weird picturing Gary perform tracks from that period nowadays, with no one else even pretending to sing/play those parts (sax, electric violin, whatever) in his current band. This elegantly solves that issue, providing it syncs up well with the performances onstage.

MACHINE MUSIC TOUR AND DVD UPDATE http://www.numan.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/post_362x175_thankyou.jpg
A lot of work is going in to the Machine Music Tour now which starts on May 22 in Leicester. You may have noticed already a lot of features and interviews in various newspapers and magazines and also on radio. The media support has been extremely strong and positive and it’s kept me very busy. There have been lot’s of meetings with various people looking at the stage show and lighting, the projections that we will be using, sound systems and so on. Choosing the winners of our film competition was actually very difficult. If I’m honest I hadn’t really expected to get many things that were good enough and suitable but I was amazed at the quality of so many of the entires and they will be a very powerful and welcome addition to the projection element of the new show. We also have some stunning new lights that we will be trying out as the tour progresses.
The biggest task though has been deciding which songs to play. The set list includes many songs that haven’t been played for a long time. In fact the set is mainly made up of songs that we don’t usually play and that’s meant that the band are already at work learning things they are completely unfamiliar with. Going though the hundreds of tapes and files that I have in storage looking for those rare parts and sounds has taken a lot of time but we are determined to recreate those old songs the way they were made, the way you know them. It will be a radically different set to what we have been playing and I’m unlikely to play a set like it again for many years so it should be quite an interesting and exciting experience.
Going back to places we haven’t played for a while is always enjoyable. For example Leicester, at the very start of the tour, should be a great night,. Other places like Newcastle and Cardiff that we don’t visit as often as I’d like are also on the tour and it will be good to play there again. One of the most exciting things about this tour though is having ‘Officers’ as support. Officers are without doubt one of the best new bands around and are going to be massive. I’ve already recorded a track with them and I’m glad to be involved at this early stage of what will, I”m sure, be a fantastic journey for them.
We also have new merchandise designed specifically for the tour based around the DVD artwork and we will also have the Machine Music DVD itself available to view on screen and to buy.
I think this tour is going to be quite special so I hope to see as many of you as possible in May and June, I’m really looking forward to it. GN

I BELIEVE THAT YOU HAVE A NEW ALBUM, 'SPLINTER', IN THE PIPELINE? WHERE ARE YOU AT WITH THAT?

I've written a huge amount of stuff for it, with around six songs being completed from a song-writing point of view. Plus there are dozens of other partial songs left to pull apart and put back together so it's well under way. I've still got a lot of production work to do but Ade Fenton, my producer, is already well into that so the pace is picking up now.
It should be finished in the next three months and we then need to choose a suitable time to release it as we have a lot of other things going on...

Yeah, that would seem to be the best time to release it. I hope Gary and the crew try to fit in some south US venues - Atlanta, GA - Charlotte, NC - or Knoxville, TN would be great for me. I'm sure they will be looking into a (super) deluxe edition of that album (Splinter) as well - I still haven't saved up enough money for the big edition of Dead Son (Rising).

One of the things I really liked about early Numan albums is how it isn't from his pov: ie the lyrics are like excerpts from a dystopian scifi novel and you only get this snapshot of what feels like a bigger picture.

Contrast with reznor who wrote very first person until yz where he actively tried to write from different perspectives. (yep even the Numan esque machine bits on tds felt first person to me, as if that was all allegorical and the central despondent theme was personal).

Later Numan is much more personal and IMHO I've felt he's straying too far into NIN territory. I really felt like a lot of DSR was too close to NIN covers.

So, in line with him realising that his voice is a usp, I hope he considers returning to the story telling like approach he used on earlier albums.

I can but dream!

botley
05-22-2012, 12:19 PM
I think tracks like "Dead Sun" & "When the Sky Bleeds..." put the lie to that critique. It actually seems like he has struck a conscious balance between the two perspectives now.

I'm going to the show at Cardiff Coal Exchange on the 2nd June, really pleased to see Berserker in there as he has never played anything from that album all the times I've seen them (which is at least ten over the years from 1994 / 1995). Personally I'd like to hear Deadliner from the Sacrifice album

You can see me talking to Gary here last year and he said they were thinking about playing Deadliner but didn't for whatever reason...

If they have some left after I get paid this week, then I'll pick it up but if not then I'm out of luck. I could try to pick one up off ebay sometime later on I suppose.

Funnily enough I find the live audio of the Decoder DVD (the show they performed here in Sydney in 2009) to be the best.

Except the DVD is missing The Fall (the older version before it was more refined), so I ripped the audio of that from the moshcam site and put it in the spot where it should be.

If anyone wants the DVD audio of that (inclusive of The Fall that I added in), let me know. That live rendition of In A Dark Place from Decoder is so awesome (dat extended intro...) and am not sure how many other times it's been done live like that.

2011 - Decoder (DVD Audio + The Fall)

Obviously the quality of The Fall differs since it's a rip from the flash, but it's good enough to my ears and fills the hole. I also ripped the video of it and put it as a single disc inside the snap case for my Decoder DVD.

I can provide the video file for that if anyone wants it too, here (VOB rip from my disc):

There are three audio sources for Jagged Live: the CD, a bootleg version which also contains the encore after the title track, and the DVD version audio.

The DVD version audio is the best mixed in my opinion. I have it ripped to mp3 if you'd like it.

Just finished his autobiography, it's all about fuckin' flyin'!

Well, not all of it, some of his flying stories are a good read, but too many of them repeat throughout the book. I was just a little disappointed that there wasn't much about the making of his albums, the odd paragraph would gloss over his hopes and aspirations for each album, and then would go back to talking about money troubles and the radio stations / press being dicks.

Oh well, it was cool to read none the less, just as a musician I was hoping for more depth on his music, I blame Steve Mallins, he did the same thing with the Depeche Mode biography, glossed over the technical details to get to the drama.

While I did notice that a lot of his book was about flying, I enjoyed it. I had heard about his flying adventures but to actually read about it was pretty great in my opinion.

I agree that there should have been a little more along the lines of album creations. I thought about the direction of Telekon to Dance - it was pretty experimental compared to TPP and Telekon. Slow Car to China springs to mind. I love Dance (I have a DJ Promo of it) but when I first heard it, I had heard I, Assassin and half of Warriors before then so it kind of threw me in a loop. I love Night Talk and You Are, You Are - I think those are some top tracks from the album. I love Stormtrooper in Drag and I like how Gary incorporated Moral and Metal during one of his live recordings.

EDIT: I think it was Live in London (US release) that incorporated the Moral + Metal deal.

Is he miming? Did he mime live? Is the promo vid dubbed over with bits from the CD? All of the above? None? Particularly on "The Fall" on that vid...

As I explained earlier in the thread, he uses backing vocals on tape for some more recent songs with the big shouty choruses, but Numan definitely does *not* mime on stage. His live vocal on these recordings is usually mixed low enough that it blends in with the backing tape to the point where you can't even really hear it. This kind of takes me out of the moment when I'm watching it, but it certainly does sound more powerful.

Is he miming?

I don't think so

Did he mime live?

He uses backing tapes and sings along with them, especially on the 'big' choruses

Is the promo vid dubbed over with bits from the CD?

Again I don't think so, The Fall does sound really good there - but Pure, Dead Sun Rising, I Die: You Die and Everyday I Die in the clip sound different to their studio counterparts.

There is a possibility some parts were retouched after the fact, like AATCHB, but it all sounds pretty fucking cool to me.

GARY NUMAN ON NEW TOUR SETLIST http://www.numan.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Gary-slab-Copyright-Mike-Scanlon.jpg
Gary Numan: ”Really looking forward to the December tour. It seems like ages since I was last on stage although it’s not been that long I suppose. It’s just that a lot has happened in that time. The Splinter album is nearing the end of the song writing process and Ade has already been working on the songs already written. We will be playing three on the tour, two you would not have heard before. It’s always exciting to play new songs to a live audience for the first time. We will also be playing a number of the remix versions of Dead Son Rising songs from the Dead Moon Falling album, another new song ‘For You’ that I wrote with Andy Gray earlier this year and ‘Petals’, the latest single collaboration with Officers, who are supporting us on the tour once again.
The reaction to the ‘Petals’ video has been amazing and, although I haven’t seen it yet, the uncensored version is still to come. I’m so glad you like it. It’s a bit nerve racking trying to perform such a powerful song when all you can do is move your head a bit with your eyes closed, and your head is all anyone can see.
The remix album, Dead Moon Falling, has come out so much better than even I expected so I’m excited to hear your reactions and thoughts on that one. The special digipak cd version will have three bonus tracks: ‘For You’, ‘Dead Sun Rising (Grayed Out Mix)’ and ‘Petals’.
I’ve been doing a lot of interviews for the Artrocker book out on November 26th so again, really looking forward to seeing that. Also been doing interviews to promote the December tour so I could be popping up in various publications and web sites all over the UK in the coming weeks.
Congratulations to TweakerRay for winning the remix competition and a big thank you to everyone who took part. We had some amazing entries.
See you in December.”
