I really didn't want to be the one to start this thread, but this (http://www.imdb.com/news/ni19526369) news was too big not to share here.

Christopher Meloni was fantastic in the series Oz. I can see him playing a menacing vamp. And of course the return of Russel Edgington is very welcomed- Denis O'Hare is fabulous. I could do without Erik's long lost sister. I fell in love with the show from the first episode but it has gone down hill. Each season starts off with alot of promise but quickly falls apart with too many story lines and letting some of these drop off without explanation. The story arc goes in too many directions. Good example of story lines going nowhere is Jason being held captive in Hotshot. It served no purpose and wasted a bunch of time unless they plan to carry out the were panther thing next season. I will still watch it but just not as excited as I used to be.

Yep it would have been so much hotter with old Erik not man-baby Erik who lost his memory. Eric or Erik? Can't remember.

orestes

It's Eric.

And not to be one of those "it was better in book" people, but it was. For starters, the nemesis in the book was so much more intimidating than fucking Marnie, who even after death, was more of a stick in the mud than anything else. Secondly, Jason actually becomes a were panther of sorts (and he isn't continuously raped by the womenfolk in Hot Shot, so that's a plus).

Well speaking of the books; Hotshot was such an interesting place surrounded by strong magic and Calvin was a really decent guy not an inbred hillbilly. Yeah Marnie turned out to be whimpy. Hallow was so much better in book.

Pam and that track suit was hilarious. The episode was a mess. Eric and his sister... whoa although she is very attractive. Who would've thought that Andy has a nice butt. I thought it was hilarious when they showed Andy's naked ass lying in bed, but you couldn't tell it was him. He looked so hairless I thought it was a woman at first.

I always thought that Andy naked would be really hairy and not something I'd want to see, but when I saw his naked ass I was mildly aroused. Well done True Blood!

This season hasn't quite sucked me in yet. I've been enjoying the were-pack plot the most at the moment; I've been waiting for Tara scenes if only to see if they actually, you know... Do something useful with her. The fact that she's just been running around tearing up the house every single scene she's had makes me wish Lafayette HAD staked her.

With the exception of Pam, Eric, Jessica, Jason, Andy, and whatever elements of violence and nudity that's around. If this season ends with one of those characters dead with no chance of any of them coming back. I'm through. I've already decided to stop watching Californication because of how stupid it got. Not as funny if you already knew her also as a tech girl from Veronica Mars :) Any character from Napoleon Dynamite in serious role is always a shock though! On the topic of "Hey, they're from" it was nice to see Doctore from the Spartacus series, and The Swede from Hell on Wheels!

As a fairly moderate liberal, it even bugged me that Terry and his crew in Iraq were shown as incompetent, dangerous, and willing to get fucked up whenever the opportunity showed itself. It can be read as a superficial statement (by a rather superficial show) that that behavior was the norm of the American soldier during those conflicts. Don't get me wrong, I'm digging this season, but that really rubbed me wrong.

Yeah, that storyline as well as the Jesus, Tara, and Hoyt subplots are all annoying the hell out of me. At least that was a really good scene. And when are they going to stop giving these "supes" new abilities? Maybe Sam had super smell before, but I don't recall him using it in the way he did this episode. He can smell survival mode? Give me a fucking break. And now not only can Sookie read people's minds, she can restore shit that's been Glamour'd away? What was the point of Eric doing that then? Just to show that he actually didn't want Alcide to remember?

What an incredible little town where EVERYONE has some sort of connection to the supernatural. All we need now are time travelling wizards and we'll be all set.

orestes
07-16-2012, 09:50 PM
Re: Sam

There have been more than once instance where Sam's heightened sense of smell was demonstrated. In the season 1 finale, he sniffed the air to track Sookie who had fled from Rene. Also, in season three he could smell that Felton was a two-ie. Telling Andy he could smell survival mode off the redneck was just shorthand for detecting subtle changes in the body.

Or maybe I've just read too many urban fantasy books like Anita Blake to not blink an eye at such plot devices. :p

Lutz

What an incredible little town where EVERYONE has some sort of connection to the supernatural. All we need now are time travelling wizards and we'll be all set.

I know they don't go out of their way to constantly point it out but a lot of the plot doesn't take place in Bon Temps. Geographically speaking we've had the vampire/werewolf culture from at least three states - Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas.

Sookie has a specific reason to be there - because the Fae world is close. That only leaves Sam. Lafayette's voodoo roots are a southern black stereotype.

And going back on that last point. Curses, voodoo and witchcraft are a southern trope along with plantation houses, black culture and swamps. Connecting people in the south to the supernatural isn't wildly outlandish it's following a tradition.

Goldfoot
07-17-2012, 03:56 AM
It just seems to me like they don't have enough to keep it interesting so they have to introduce new supernatural plot devices to characters that don't necessarily have to be connected to anything. I think it would have been pretty interesting if Terry's army buddy was legitimately crazy, but they had to go and throw a curse in there. I haven't read the books, or even really looked into them, but the show was presented as being about vampires and humans coexisting. It's one thing to introduce weres, as they've got certain lines of mythology that link those two types of "supes". It's quite another to just keep pulling more and more into this relatively small cast of characters.

And I definitely agree with S.D.P that this is resembling a soap opera. It's been so over the top the past couple seasons that I can't even take it seriously. I enjoyed the main plot of the third season, but then they didn't have any closure, leaving it open to bring Russel back this season. In my opinion, last season was pretty much a waste. It was bordering on self parody, which I found hysterical, but left me wanting them to bring it back to the core ideas that attracted me to the show in the first place. They seem to be doing a better job of that this season, though in the last two episodes they have sent multiple storylines off in directions I personally think are stupid and/or unnecessary.

The best thing about soaps is usually around christmas they off a bunch of characters, Runaway trains, falling aeroplanes, fires, murder etc.. plus they have bigger budgets than this show. Everytime there's a diner scene in true blood i kinda wish for one of the above to happen..

I haven't read the books, or even really looked into them, but the show was presented as being about vampires and humans coexisting. It's one thing to introduce weres, as they've got certain lines of mythology that link those two types of "supes". It's quite another to just keep pulling more and more into this relatively small cast of characters. The books (which are truly awful) have even more supe characters than the show. Keeping my fingers crossed that they won't be introduced once Alan Ball leaves.

This show has become horrendous. I haven' watched season 1 in a while but I really don't remember it being this terrible. There was maybe three scenes of Vampire politics in this episode. I don't know why i still think the writers would even go there but this whole authority business is fleshed out barely, the impact has not been felt by me and it doesn't seem like they'll ever get into it I don't know why I would even think that they would at this point.

I understand people like this show, and the fan base has definitely changed, or grown or something. But the smoke monster? Way to go lets just ruin Terry as a character I want to watch.

More jesus plot line. More fairy plot line. More werewolf plot line. More shifter bla bla bla.

I doubt any of this crap intertwines in any meaningful way. I'll still watch because I'm a hypocrite idiot, but this show is terrible. How do you let this follow Game Of Thrones. BLECH

The strength of True Blood is in it's great characters. When they are given time to air and the actors run away with them it is great but when they are sort of lazily pushed around as puppets to the story it's not so great. It gravitates somewhere between the two these days. The other thing that True Blood used to do brilliantly (but I think has gone completely now) is to write brazenly stupid plot developments extremely well.

And how did Arlene/Holly et al get promoted to series regular ahead of Ginger?

Seemed like Russel is the only one that is on his game. He only really just got out into the public so I can see them letting him flourish once again. Plus, he did just kill two higher up vampires in consecutive episodes and I would love to see even more.

But god... Tara needs to fucking die. Whenever she is on screen I roll my eyes and cannot wait for it to end. The only upside on her is that we get to see Pam who is always a delight.

HBO's released spoilers for the next two episodes.

Episode #57: “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”

As the Authority proceeds with Lilith’s plan, Eric (Alexander Skarsgård) plots his escape. Gran (Lois Smith) directs Sookie (Anna Paquin) to a clue to her parents’ murderer. Andy (Chris Bauer) and Jason (Ryan Kwanten) search for leads to the identities of the people behind the shifter killings. Alcide (Joe Manganiello) recalls his pack induction; Arlene (Carrie Preston) gets caught in Terry (Todd Lowe) and Patrick’s (Scott Foley) crossfire; Steve (Michael McMillian) gets a new pet.

Episode #58: “Gone, Gone, Gone”

With vampire-on-human attacks increasing, the Authority attempts to woo public favor. Meanwhile, Nora (Lucy Griffiths) tries to convert Eric to Lilith’s gospel. Jason finds a mysterious scroll; Elijah (Keram Malicki-Sanchez), the new vampire sheriff of Area 5, pushes Pam (Kristin Bauer van Straten) and Tara (Rutina Wesley) to obey a new mandate; Sam (Sam Trammell) and Luna (Janina Gavankar) search for Emma (Chloe Noelle); Russell (Denis O’Hare) seeks a higher calling.

I was just telling a friend what has gotten me down about this show lately and this is such a big one. I started counting off subplots on my fingers and I made it to 6 of them that are boring and annoying me. The fact that there are 6 SUBplots is bad enough, but there's still more than that, depending on how you want to break them up. At least this past episode returned to being unintentionally funny. Or maybe it was intentional. I don't know, but I lost it when Sam was rolling around like a dog, sniffing the rug. Then there was that whole, "hate groups isn't just about hate," exchange.

Also, I tend to think of myself as heterosexual, but GODDAMN Alcide. Eric too, but especially Alcide.

And one thing that has been bothering me is, how the hell does Tara get the best of Jessica when she about 2 to 3 years old... and Tara was only like 2 days old? Do you have to be significantly older to be stronger? I thought if you are older, you're stronger no matter what?

Oh christ, a season of Messiah!Bill. The vampire persecution angle does seem interesting, though.

I did. It didn't knock me out.

Yeah, I only watched it to see if it would be worth my time watching this season. The opening scene with Billith flying away was horrible! I think I'll just read io9's recaps this season.

All of the really good television I've watched in the interim between these two seasons has drained my enthusiasm. The broad strokes of social commentary that American Horror Story explored last season seem more subdued and subliminal in comparison to tonight's episode.

Decent enough to keep my attention. We'll see what happens next week.
And I agree about flying Billith. That was just lame.

I thought the episode was pretty good. There were definitely more dull moments than good moments, but kind of interested where it is going to go from here.

Never forget.

Here's my random thoughts:
- I am so frigging over Alcide.
- Not enough LaLa.
- This "evil Governor" plotline looks like it's going to be a flop.
- Luna had the worst send-off of any character in any fictional work EVER.

After all of the ridiculousness that's been happening with the show and how it gets sillier and sometimes very dumb. I'm done with the show. It's just not fun to watch anymore.

The ratings were down for the premiere. Entertainment Weekly said it's possibly because of the NBA playoffs. Sure...

Well... it is only the first episode.. Although I would say I am tired of looking at Alcide's ass.

Yea, I agree to an extent. I always liked the wolves storyline because it takes a departure from all the vamp happenings that are going on even if the storyline is completely ridiculous.

I felt embarrassed watching this episode.

So tired of seeing "vampire speed" used to move 5ish feet and the rest of the sfx were just fucking horrible, billith vision, flying billith, whatever that shit was that was an excuse to have deborah anne wolfe rip her shirt up. So dumb.

True Blood jumped the shark after season 3. I'm going to hang in there and watch this season although I am less than enthusiastic.
A couple questions; is this the last season? And, which character is Rutger Hauer playing, Warlow or Niall? This remains a mystery right now.

Season 4 was horrible and turned into white-trash dribble, but I looooooved the last season. It was what it's all been building up to. More large consequence actions, politics, (real) surprises, less sex (thank you), and all done in pitch-perfect campness. This season seems like it could be just as good.

The problems with this show are countless and the fun bits are rarer than ever. But the things that really bug me are a couple of vampire traits/powers that are cool in theory but make for massive, frustrating logic holes in the show.

1) Vampire blood: It's always bugged me that this apparently effective panacea is used so inconsistently (and somehow remains unknown to the medical establishment and human culture at large, which could cure a common ailment known as "death" with it). Vampires could solve all their PR problems by curing all disease forever.

2) Super-speed: This is now the most irritating flaw in the show for me. E.g., at the top of the episode, why in sweet holy fuck would Eric and Sookie run at standard slow-ass human speed from Billith? (To an ELEVATOR?! With a malevolent vampire god hot on your heels? grrr.) Why did Eric scream "RU-U-U-U-UN!" rather than put Sookie over his shoulder and run at super-vamp-hyper-cheetah speed to literally anywhere else? It was a pretty time-sensitive situation they were in.

Petty? Sure, but now that this show has become the Telemundo version of itself and given up on character development altogether, these things stand out even more.

EDIT: oh that's right I forgot that Eric can also fucking fly. But, whatever, y'know... "RU-U-U-U-U-UN!"

The use of vampire speed in this episode is why I decided "fuck this show" after I watched this episode. It's really annoying. eye roll inducing.

I'm not so sure. This trailer makes me think he might actually be Niall, or whatever the fuck name he's going by on the show, instead of Warlow. Plus, in the flashback to the Stackhouses' murder, Warlow looked like a vampire version of Rob Zombie.

Yeaa, I see what you're saying. But when Jason first got into the car and just the way he was dressed and the whole vibe of the scene... it just stood out to me. They did a decent job at least making him look totally different in the flashbacks.

I was very pleased when I read the Rolling Stone review of the show with the headline "Bored On The Bayou". We're not the only ones getting it that this might finally lost a bit of it's tooth.

I'm finding this season very hard to watch...I guess 4 seasons of bad plot, character development, and writing have finally nailed this one in for me. I don't know if I'll make it past this episode.

I don't see all the hate about this season. The first three were great and yea the show has been declining, but I find this season very interesting because we really do not know what is going to happen since everything now is going apeshit. I see the show taking a major turn from the current plot going on with the people vs the vamps. We know we are going to get the ridiculous scenes that make us roll our eyes, but there is still enough here to keep me interested like Bill contorting that chick and doing the whole no gravity drinking blood skill... that was just sick.

The show has been getting more ridiculous and silly... but that is what I kind of like about it.

This used to be must watch TV for me. I'd watch at 9pm exactly every Sunday. For the last several season I clung to the characters that I loved and kept going but after the season opener I'm done watching this when it comes on. I'm going to DVR it and watch it in a few chunks.

Though they deserve some props for making me like Tara last season.

I still hate Tara and always will. She is even more annoying being a Vampire and I cannot stand how they make her out to be so strong when she is only like a toddler compared to age.
