Now that Trent and Atticus have a few scores under their belts, I thought it was high time that we started ranking the score albums. Keep in mind that I'm not including Trent and Atticus' solo work here, especially since Atticus has done more solo score work than Trent.

Anyway, my ranking so far:

Gone Girl
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
Before The Flood
The Social Network
Patriots Day

So far....

1. Gone Girl
2. The Social Network
3. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
4. Quake

I haven't had the chance to listen to Before the Flood and Patriots Day in their entirety at this moment.

FINALLY listened to patriots day this morning...so here's my ranking (also, the top two change depending on my mood)

TGWTDT
Gone Girl
Before The Flood
The Social Network (while it's still great, i don't find myself going back to it on a weekly basis like the other three above...also, docked points for reusing Ghosts material :p )
Patriots Day (the last few songs on this are incredible but the first half was just "fine"...but i've also only listened to it once, so far)

Sad statto that I am, I've attributed 5 points to 1st, 4 to 2nd etc, to come up with a ranking, based on average score for number of votes cast (as not everyone's heard all the albums). Ignoring Quake, not a film score, ranking is thus:-

1 - GG
2 - TSN
3 - TGWTDT
4 - BTF
5 - PD

I'll update if we get 5 more votes...!

1. Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
2. Social Network
3. Gone Girl
4. Before the Flood
5. Patriots Day

Although I don't think I've spent enough time with the last two. It took me a while to digest GWTDT for it to be my favourite

But... I love them all equally and for different reasons... I've never in my life understood "ranking" things...

EDIT: Also, it saddens me to see Before the Flood so low on lists so far. It's really fucking good! That TR/AR/Gustavo Santaolalla/Mogwai combo makes me feel tingly in my cockals...

1. The Social Network -- The OG. I don't think any other score has had the same level of substance as here (#2 comes close), and so much of it feels more fleshed out and layered than their later works.
2. Before the Flood -- Even if not fully TR/AR, I utterly adore this album. If only it would ever come out on CD!!
3. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo -- May be nearly forty tracks but nearly all are great, the moody, brooding atmosphere is wonderful, and it has some intensely beautiful songs on it. I think it transports you to the film (or, specifically, to a winter wasteland) perhaps better than any of the other scores.

4/5. The Vietnam War/Patriots Day -- Maybe it's just because they were released near each other, but these two sound basically the same to me in terms of sound, the only real difference being that the Vietnam War has some real bangers added into the mix. All of the more quiet songs seem interchangeable. I definitely like both of these, to be fair, and there's some songs that really stand out to me in particular, but they don't come near the level of the top three for me.

6. Gone Girl -- This is really people's favorite?? It's the only one I hardly ever listen to. I know it's kind of what they were going for but it just feels too... plasticky, contrived, or something, and none of it stands out at all. But hey, to each their own!

Gone Girl, much like the film, has a lot going on under the surface. The ticking clock mentality of "The Way He Looks At Me", the Mike Garson piano in "Just Like You", the sledgehammer effect of "Consummation". The fact that it was their third collaboration with Fincher also means that the three had finally found a rhythm with each other, which is evident by how well the score compliments the film. That's not to say that their other two Fincher scores don't compliment their respective films, but to me, "Gone Girl" is the best fit overall, which is why I place it above "The Social Network" and "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo".

The Social Network Is easily my favorite. It’s the only one that almost sounds like a NIN album to me. The other stuff lacks that “NIN magic” and sound. I can’t really get into them. I love the entire NIN catalog, and I love Social Network, but i just can’t get into the other scores. Perhaps I’ll try them again this week.

I completely disagree.

And since we have a couple more scores to rank...

Before The Flood
The Social Network
The Vietnam War
Bird Box
mid90s
Patriots Day

well...that's because it's not NIN. you have to think of the scores as something separate. even though they're created by the main core of NIN, they're not NIN, and they're not meant to be. if you change your expectations and just enjoy the music for what it is instead of what you think it should be/want it to be, you might find you enjoy it a lot more!

2. The Vietnam War
3. The Social Network
4. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
5. Gone Girl
6. Watchman: Volume 2
7. Mank
8. Before the Flood
9. Watchman: Volume 3
10. Patriots Day
11. Bird Box
12. Mid90s
13. Waves
14. Quake
15. Soul

Notes: I love the TR&A soundtracks so much. I work in an environment where I can listen to music, but I can't really play anything too harsh or controversial, so I tend to not play Nine Inch Nails tracks that have lyrics at work. The TR&A are great because I can listen to these at work for the most part. Let me start out saying about my list, I never imagined that an album would surpass The Social Network or The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - these two albums after easily a hundred listens or more are so amazing. I remember when I first listened to the Vietnam War I was blown away but it did remind me a lot of TGWTDT and it seemed somewhat repetitive in some parts, but after time, I just kept coming back. The aggressive and punch and cool little unexpected pieces thrown in the songs really make this fantastic for me. I decided to split Watchmen into three separate albums, although they're connected, they each have own their own sound. If I were to combine the Watchmen volumes into one, it easily would still be in the number one spot. I can't believe they were able to make something so good, I feel like this was the apex of their work. Mid90s is where I start to listen to, but not really have strong feelings for. I think I can only list maybe 1 or 2 title tracks from Mid90s, Waves, Quake and Soul each, that's not to say I've only listened to them 1 or 2 times, I have listened to each probably 30 times or more, but I never stop what I am doing to see what the title of that song was. Soul is in last, it's not because I hate it, it's simply the least memorable for me outside of the movie - Epiphany is the only song that grabbed me out of the whole album. I'm actually surprised Soul is getting more award recognition compared to Mank (to me, a far better album). As far as all the one-off tracks, they're great, but they're not albums so I didn't list them.

That's why I love their work.

Not sure where else to put this, Louder ranked the 15 most known TR&AR scores. I agree with... some of this.

Right now, somewhat haphazardly...

Each one of these in the first batch is to me a world unto itself, totally self-contained and detachable from their associated films. For me, these ones don't need the film to convey a whole story, atmosphere, mood, etc. I feel like I lived with each one of these for a period and they kind of seeped into my life at the time, some (TGWTDT, Mank) more than others (Birdbox, Empire of Light).

Side note: I just realized I haven't seen Birdbox or Empire of Light, but whatever:

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
The Social Network
Mank
Birdbox
Empire of Light
Gone Girl
The Watchmen
Vietnam War

These are ones I've definitely enjoyed at different times, but always kinda conscious of the fact that they're film scores, and so always kind of with the movie in mind (The Killer I'm on the fence about, cause aside from The Brute, I could see it becoming something more immersive / independent and more like the first group):

The Killer
Bones and All
TMNT: Mutant Mayhem
Waves
Soul

Never got into for some reason (especially Patriot's Day, which I listened to once and never revisited; will definitely do after seeing it so high on some of your lists):

Before the Flood
Mid-90s
Patriot's Day

I think TGWTDT is my favorite out of all of them. There is a cohesive feeling to that soundtrack that really just takes me into that world of Sweden and the snow and darkness. The Social Network is definitely up there, as is Gone Girl. It seems like a lot of folks here agree those first three are the best of them. I think after those I'd choose Watchmen as a whole. There's a song on Volume 3 called "Which Came First" that is my favorite, but there is another arrangement of it that isn't on the soundtrack but is featured in the show. It's in the last scene where Angela and Will Reeves are sitting in the movie theater, and it's same melodies as a choral arrangement behind it that is just amazing. I ripped the audio of that scene and put it in my digital album calling it "Wounds Need Air".
