Just a cool video of him talking about the state of music today, like many other things the man says it's pretty good. Noticed we didn't have a thread for one of my working man heroes so here it is.

Heres the link to the video.

I have all his spoken word albums and I've seen him talk in person once. I love this man. He has so many amazing stories and insights on the world, whether or not you agree with him I think everyone could take away something from one of his talks.

WTF, why no shows near me? Give New England a little love Henry? My freaking cat is named Henry.

I've seen his spoken word show twice and could listen to him talk for hours.

I think on his website he said not to worry if he's not in your area this tour, as he's doing another U.S. later in the year (summer, fall? idk). Also patiently awaiting him, I've missed him the last few times he's been through NY and it's been way too long.

Love Rollins. Much like Bill Maher, I can just listen to him talk, and talk, and talk. Saw him live once and 3 hours went by like that. My favorite clip he ever did (being a huge Woody Allen fan) was this:

It's just such a nice little commentary on the current state of cinema.

Filmed this spoken word engagement a few years ago and I've been sitting on it ever since because I just never had the time to go through the whole show and carefully cut it into pieces without completely interrupting his various points and discussion topics. As soon as I noticed I could post LOOOOONG videos on YouTube all of a sudden however, I just knew the time had finally come to get this shit out there.

It's not as bad as it seems, btw. He's a very witty and engaging and entertainingly poignant speaker who covers an exceptionally wide range of subjects and it all just FLIES right by, and on top of THAT the last 40 minutes of the first video and the last hour or so of the second video are just blank blue screen, I just didn't notice till AFTER I'd already spent ALL DAY uploading them, lolFAIL.

Filming wasn't allowed, of course, and he came out while the house lights were still up and I was in an exposed position, so apologies for missing the fascinating beginning where he just leapt right into it with guns blazing, as well as for the 15 seconds or so I missed while switching tapes between the two clips. This man can TALK.

Anyway, watch it all, skip around, whatever...but HOLY SHIT get ready for some killer stuff.

Enjoy!

Like all his work with "Black Flag" but i prefer him in "Rollins Band", i really think he's a talented and funny guy though i can't stand him watching him in dumb "History channel" and "Nat Geo" shows, he should return with "Rollins Band" (Weight lineup) and kick ass again in my opinion...

I like his live spoken word stuff, and will always have time to listen to him if he pops up on a podcast. Two of his "bits" or stories I remember first listening to was the story with the airline pilot who was also a drummer and the time he went to visit a throat doctor who also happened to be Michael Bolton's throat guy. For a non-comedian he knows how to keep an audience entertained with just a mic stand.

Yes, he's very talented, his books show that side of him too, he just writes his thoughts with no barriers and lets them go, i recommend to you guys "Black Coffee Blues" (where "I Know You" comes from) and "Eyes Scream", i heard good things about "Solipsist" but have never read...

Yeah I'm a huge fan of his spoken word shows. Whenever I need a pick me up he's one of the people I turn to, kinda like a personal motivator. I've only had the pleasure in seeing him perform once but I'm looking forward to the day I see him on stage again.

Rollins Band is also great, Nice is a killer record.

I really liked the "Henry Rollins Show", very interesting idea with great guests and cool music, my favorite part of the show was "Drawing conclusions", that are animations that illustrate his spoken words, the Wal Mart one is specially hilarious:

I like "Nice" too, but i've always prefered "Get Some go again" over it and my favorite RB album is the very underrated "Come on in and burn"

Cool thread, I just finished reading "a dull roar", I couldn't let go of this book, sure Henry rants quite a bit but I had been putting it on the backburner for so long it was a long overdue read, and it is a must read for any rollins band fan as it chronicles the last tour they did in 2006 (and most likely and sadly the last ever as the man was quite unhappy by the end).
I love the rollins band, weight and ciab are two amazing records, what a lineup he had then, I'm not so much into black flag but Henry is a real true character, he lives it up, "the only way to do it is to kill it" I can't deny it got me motivated reading him!

I think he's a great person. Truly a smart man. I miss his IFC show...I wish they'd put season two out on DVD.

Musically, I like a few songs here and there but wouldn't call myself a Rollins Band fan. "Disconnect" is probably my favorite. Black Flag were good.

This was just posted in the comments to the article. I'm really trying not to start a flame war because I expressed my admiration for him earlier. But this tests that. I can understand the parent angle to what he says completely, but RW's kids are young adults now and Cobain's was still a baby. Now, that video is from 20 years ago (as if the VHS quality didn't give that away) so maybe he has a completely different take on Cobain's suicide too so I'd give him the benefit of the doubt on that.

Not surprised to read such strong statements by Henry, but you gotta remember that he has had a traumatic experience during the L.A. Riots when his best friend (Joe Cole) was murdered so it's no surprise he's a bit "pro life"...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vasIL6mtNIk

Sometimes i think Henry is as "sad" and "miserable" as any of the guys he criticizes but he just turned that "depression" and "inner anger" into writing, spoken shows, music, etc...

Certainly i don't agree with EVERYTHING he says but i've always found his opinions fascinating.

I've been reading a book about the 90s from Kennedy, the MTV woman who has a chapter on Henry Rollins, he came out with some schtick about some of the grunge bands being 'corporate sell outs' and she said that he has a company and earns a fortune doing voice overs for adverts, hmmm some hypocrisy there.

About the Robin Williams death, it's horrendous and sad, but one thing I can't comprehend about both his and Cobains death is the horrible way they did it, not a nice memory to leave loved ones with, not that I can really understand what goes through someone's mind to do that in the first place

I don't think Henry is a multi-millionaire, he's a cult act at best and obviously he has many gigs in writing and spoken words yet i think they only cover his gas and food bills, obviously he has some money but we aren't talking about f'n Mick Jagger or Elton John...

Henry really showed his ass on this one, & he comes off like a judgmental, ignorant prick. Stating that everyone who commits suicide "blew it" is a pretty sweeping indictment. He's basically reinforcing the idea that people who commit suicide are just a bunch of selfish assholes who don't have the mental fortitude to endure tough situations. And to add insult to injury, he implies that one's entire body of life accomplishments is negated solely by how they exited this world. Simplistic much? That's one hell of a black & white world he's living in, must be nice. He talks about how no one can understand another's personal torment & that he's no doctor, then turns around & tells suffering people to just "hang in there" & blathers some warm fuzzy "life is what you make it" mantra. Are you fucking kidding me? That is some weak-ass shit right there. Yeah Henry, we get that Joe Cole's death was tragic & senseless & deeply scarred you, but indirectly offering him up as a reason to stick around is asinine when the people you're directing that message to are in the grips of severe emotional pain & didn't know your friend. Maybe Henry needs to take his own advice & get the fuck over it already.

I understand where he's coming from in many regards, but his fundamental mistake is trying to see an irrational act such as suicide as a logical choice people are capable of making. That's just not the way it is. I don't want to turn this thread into a discussion on the ethics/rationale of suicide, but this (http://www.theguardian.com/science/brain-flapping/2014/aug/12/robin-williams-suicide-and-depression-are-not-selfish) is a great article that breaks down some of the myths surrounding suicide & depression.

The cherry on top is where Henry tells us he has "life by the neck" & is dragging it along. Seriously? The man is one big cliche. Massive loss of respect for Hank on this one. I respect his right to have an opinion about this topic, I just don't agree w/one word of it. Let's face it, suicide is a no-win situation for everyone involved. There is no bright side, period. But lambasting & shaming people who are mentally ill is loathsome & does nothing to address the issue itself.

I think when you've seen a close friend die right there next to you that does put a bit of perspective on life, its probaly Henry's angle here, it seems like he looks at it from the survivor side and this can't be pleasant place to be in, the dead dude is gone so he can't really care.

wow, i feel cheated but at the same time glad that he has that much money (as far as i'm concerned: he deserves it...), still i think those figures are a bit blown off, i guess only Henry knows the truth, if that's so i don't care it doesn't change what i feel about him...

As for the whole Robin Williams "situation": i said i don't agree 100% with him but i understand where he comes from, not surprised by all the "hate" and responses he had... Actually i don't condone suicide and i even would justify it if the person is either sick or without children (because, let's face it: you're always going to hurt someone...),
The article @ad infinitum (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=80) posted was very illustrative on this situation and it's true that the people that judge suicide clearly don't understand it (just like Henry...)

And Henry just posted an apology on his site: http://henryrollins.com/news

For the last 9+ hours, I have been answering letters from people from all over the world. The anger is off the scale and in my opinion, well placed.
The article I wrote in the LA Weekly about suicide caused a lot of hurt. This is perhaps one of the bigger understatements of all time. I read all the letters. Some of them were very long and the disappointment, resentment and ringing clarity was jarring.
That I hurt anyone by what I said, and I did hurt many, disgusts me. It was not at all my intent but it most certainly was the result.
I have had a life of depression. Some days are excruciating. Knowing what I know and having been through what I have, I should have known better but I obviously did not. I get so mad when I hear that someone has died this way. Not mad at them, mad at whatever got them there and that no one magically appeared to somehow save them.
I am not asking for a break from the caning, take me to the woodshed as much as you see fit. If what I said has caused you to be done with me, I get it.
I wrote something for the LA Weekly that they will post on Monday.
I wanted to get this out at this moment.
I am deeply sorry. Down to my marrow. I can’t think that means anything to you, but I am. Completely sorry. It is not of my interest to hurt anyone but I know I did. Thank you for reading this. Henry

I'm satisfied and not really surprised at how quickly he's responded to this. If it was nearly anybody else it would sound phony, but I get that he has such a dedicated following and how dedicated he is to answering to everything he can. I can understand that kind of anger that would produce such an otherwise negative and flippant statement. Part of anyone's grief will include some anger. I'll be very interested to see what Monday produces.

Eh, it's fine. The thread is still young to prosper. Speaking of which to change the topic:

Ever since I saw his comments on DJ culture and electronic music, the guy is so far up his own ass it's not even funny.

I've enjoyed the music he's helped created over the years, but Henry Rollins has got to be one of the biggest douchebags in music.

He's the only active musician I've ever heard make statements about it in that light. Tons of people I know and my friends denounce electronic/dubstep music too so it's not shocking to me really. if you're referring to this, I wouldn't take it serious at all, a majority of it was probably a comedy routine anyways:

He always aims for laughs at his shows.

kind of funny but too much like closed minded meatheads in the metal/punk world that piss me off & drag their scenes down uncreative back alleys of sceney posing. If you can't see how jungle and punk are peas in a pod, go back to watching touched by an angel

So much better than the KORN version...

Returning to the music, i ¡'ve found that this album is one of my favorite releases by him:

http://musicmp3spb.org/images/h/henry_rollins/fhot_animala9ec20a2007d8b0ca7c64d.jpg

Yeah i know it's actually two releases at the same time but my CD version has it that way and it works so well...
"Drive by Shooting" EP it's one of the funniest albums ever, it's Henry at it's most hilarious form...
"Hot Animal Machine" is "dark" Rollins, shows the perfect transition between Black Flag's style and Rollins Band music (it's actually before the debut of RB).
If anyone don't have this i suggest you guys to check it out, it's the perfect album to understand Henry and his music...

Ugh, thanks Hank for the commentary on "non music fuckheads."

What instruments does this guy play again? oh, yeah, right...
This is just stupid shit.

Is this really supposed to be a form of "stand up comedy?" Is this supposed to make me laugh?

He does sound like he doesn't know what he is talking about when he talks about electronic music. He just inaccurately reduces it to the worst in the genre. Are there hacks in the electronic genre? Yeah, but there are in every style of music. You could easily break down any style of music to just a basic stereotype.

Don't get me wrong, I love his work and even some of his spoken word stuff. He is just an opinionated guy. He says lots of stuff I agree and disagree with.

So he's worth 12 mil, huh. Does he ever talk about his wealth? Does his material include stuff about wealth inequality or poverty at all? Just curious.

Anyways, back to the music. This is probably my favorite Rollins Band offering, mainly because of the first three tracks. Great covers.

absolutely agree with you, but Henry's been pretty vocal about his dislike at the end of the 06 tour, also seems like the drummer wasn't trustworthy in Henry's book. He prepared hard for the tour and expected the same from the others but it didn't happen, probably why he gave up on the band after.

I saw him speak at my school(university of north Texas) a few years ago. He spoke for two hours and didn't once take a sip of water.

Seeing this thread just reminded me I have tickets to see him in January in Bristol!

I took some photos of Henry performing in Bristol tonight. It was unassigned seating which meant I managed to get front row centre. They're pretty crap photos because I didn't want to distract him too much.

He's playing Newcastle tonight and I was really hoping to go but my two friends who were interested can't go for various reasons, and it was a stretch anyway (got some home shit to sort out) so almost certainly missing it. :(

So far its only been a live show thing with a live band. I had tickets for it at one point but they cancelled that tour. No idea if its going to be released just as a dvd. I did go to a special London event a few years ago where they showed clips from the film and Rollins, Jesse Hughes and Grace Jones performed live.

I went to see the movie in 2016 with Rollins actually being there. It was fun but as you can imagine there was little to zero substance to the film apart from giving all of our heroes a sequence to shine. Rollins is pretty much the only narrative element here. What I did like was the band that accompanied the movie, playing all kinds of cover songs of some classics like "ace of spades" and "raining blood". The singer is very capable and I liked the atmosphere. A longer tour was cancelled like Digital Twilight already pointed out.

I managed to talk to the director once on instagram as they were apparently reworking some elements of the show, but suddenly it all stopped and the thing seems to be in limbo right now.

Man, y'all are slippin'.

Henry SANG friggin' RISE ABOVE at Cyndi Lauper's annual benefit show in LA.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rAWnkM9-BE&feature=emb_logo

Yes, this starts off awkward. Yes, the backing band looks lame as fuck (and please have the fucking keyboardist & backup singers sit out the Black Flag cover). Yes Lauper looks like she's gonna float away at any moment in that absurd dress. But overall I still think I back this. Rollins looks uncomfortable at first (understandable) but then slowly eases into it and has good (if awkward) energy throughout. He sounds GOOD. And they def. were having fun. Considering this was at a benefit show, i'm glad it happened even if there were some corny things surrounding the performance.

I don't think Rollins has performed Black Flag music live since the West Memphis 3 shows, correct? And nothing for Rollins Band since 2006?

They keytar player looks like the keyboard player in Michael C. Hall's (yes, Dexter) new band Princess Goes to the Butterfly Museum. Same dude, right?
