Discussion of everything from their old days where they kicked obscene amounts of ass, to these days where Lars drums on empty paint cans and they release gems like this:

I just found out about Lulu not that long ago. It's.... it's awful. Not like St. Anger tiresome but really really bad.

I really enjoyed their S&M album. That was a genre spanning collaboration I could get behind, but this...

what's amazing is that no one is their vast network of employees/friends etc had the balls to step in and stop this. Someone had to know what damage this would do to their already embarrassing track record over the past 15 years or so. Or, if someone did try & speak up, it's even worse that they ignored them & went ahead with it anyway. Plus, how do THEY not know it sucks as theyre doing it/listening back & try to make it better themselves. Are you that fucking scared of Lou Reed?

When did Metallica actually start to decline? Was it really just at Metallica (The Black Album) era? Or was it really during the Load/ReLoad eras? I am aware however that the shit really hit the fan during the Napster controversy, and St. Anger wasn't really received well. I think Death Magnetic seemed to get more praise, but it just feel short in some ways too from what I've read and heard.

Aside from that, it just looks like some of them just seemed to slowly but surely change their stance on file-sharing from the late 2000s right up until now. I also thought that it was kind of funny to see Lars Ulrich call St. Anger a complete abortion here.

Black Album is sort where it began, imo. It's not a bad album by any means, but, it certainly got to their heads. Load and Reload were/are garbage aside from a couple songs. And, I don't really mind St. Anger too much. I can see what they were going for, and I respect that. And coming from a einsturzende neubauten fan, I kinda liked the snare.

This is what I got in an email from MetClub:

Now the fun stuff: We want you, the Clubbers, to be involved in the show... this is one big party! Some of you will be receiving an invitation to participate in the envelope with your tickets... to give you a hint, you may want to brush up on your Metallica trivia and riffs! You should have already received an e-mail asking you to submit your stories of how Metallica influenced your life by being the catalyst for you to meet your significant other or perhaps name your pet after a member. We're also looking for your YouTube videos to show us your skills playing and/or singing Metallica songs... a few lucky Clubbers will be invited to join the band on stage!

I actually liked the Load/Reload stuff. Big fan of the S&M album, mostly because of Michael Kamen though. They were doing good in the overall scheme of things (except that part of the fanbase the black album alienated) until Napster, and people were destroying their merch in the streets. So you could say it started to chip away in '91 although the album was a monster, but reached a more public level once Lars went on the crusade he did. But that they're still touring and recording (and pissing their fans off, which I love about them too), just means they've taken their hits but have gotten back up each time.

Seriously? IMO, St. Anger is the worst album in their catalog. Load was really good and I've got some great memories tied it. Reload however is total crap in my books. To me that is when they began to fall off their game....

Check your ticket envelope for a note from us... each night select Clubbers will be invited to participate in the show. It could be your chance to show your trivia skills or your amazing power to know Metallica songs in a single note. Also, once you get inside, make sure that at some point during the evening, you head up to the "poster room" on the second floor... that's where the Metallica Museum will be and you can check out some very rare Metallica memorabilia pulled directly from the collections of the band members themselves

Looking forward to checking out the poster room. If I can, I'll snap some photos and post'em here the following day :)

believe me, i think this show was badass overall. really really cool thing to do for the fans, and so much cooll shit throughout. i just meant that Please Don't Judas Me, Sad But True, the lyrical side to Hate Train (and Lars' awul drumming) and paying FOUR Diamond Head covers at a Metallica show was kinda lame. Would you have wanted Peter Murphy to do 4 of his own songs in a row at the '09 NIN shows?

I want to add something to this thread. Metallica have rocked the universe's foundations (Master of Puppets, ...and Justice For All). Now almost everybody completely hates the Lulu project. I for one freakin' love the hell out of it. If you listen to Lulu enough you will understand the genius of this album. Never have I heard such strange lyrics and emoting. Lou Reed is insane. He definitely gives you plenty to think about. Once you play the album through a few times, the story will start coming to life. Metallica create a perfectly flawed and awesome score for this twisted play. Seriously. Lulu rules.

Piko

Musically, it's decent. Lou Reed's the one who ruined it. Since the 70s, he's figured that the incoherent rambling of his bad poetic lyrics were passable. But it's mostly his delivery that bothers me the most. He refuses to sing, and insists on "being wild", and it just doesn't work for me. Velvet Underground, a couple solo albums and I'm set. But musically, it's possibly some of the heaviest stuff I've heard from Metallica in ages.

I agree.
I enjoy a couple of songs, I admit it, but I think that album was a complete waste of good riffs.

Ditch a few of the songs, ditch Reed's vocals, refine some of the core elements - you could possibly have a pretty cool Metallica album. But instead we got an album that lacked chemistry. It was like they tried to cater to Reed, but couldn't, and instead of canning the concept, they went on with it. It's a mess.

I have felt the same way about the "disconnect" between Reed's vocal delivery and the music. However, don't think about it as music. Think about it as a stage play. Lou Reed is an actor and Metallica's music is the soundtrack. How can you not love Lou Reed's vocals? He's insane.

Piko
12-15-2011, 10:49 AM
Haven't liked his vocals since The Bells, at least. He WAS a good vocalist, then all of a sudden, he wasn't.

12-15-2011, 01:24 PM
There's some seriously dark shit going on in these lyrics. This guy is a crazy motherfucker that's for sure. I think a lot of people are stuck on how the vocals and the music don't fit together the way they like vocals and music to fit together but aren't focusing on the fact that combining those two seemingly disconnected elements was the entire reason for making the album. Musically, it's not Metallica's best effort. It's the whole thing together that makes it what it is.

i recall reviews leading up to its release that were saying it. one even called the quick double kicks in the title track "blastbeats." i couldn't make this shit up, dude.

in regards to Beyond Magnetic, it's somewhat backwards to say an EP of outtakes that didn't even make an album are somehow a return to form — especially considering the material. i don't sit, twiddling my thumbs, through crap like "Hate Train" and go, "man! this is as solid as anything on Justice!" the outtakes are just as boring, monotonous, and uneventful as Death Magnetic proper; i find myself wondering where 'long, progressive songs' from ye days of olde became 'the song needs to hit 7 minutes, even though it should have ended 5 riffs ago.' every song.

That's exactly how I thought of it as I heard it, like I get what they're going for but even then I still could find no joy in listening to it. I'd rather watch an actual stage play with Lou Reed and Metallica.

That would be freakin' awesome. There would be some simple scenery and stage dressing. And there would be curtains and a scene for each song.

So Metallica announced a festival for June in Atlantic City, and the lineup is pretty fucking amazing. In addition to them playing Black Album on one night and motherfuckin' Ride the Lightning on the other, they have handpicked some awesome and head scratching groups:
Initial lineup for the Orion Music + More Festival:
•Arctic Monkeys
•Avenged Sevenfold
•Modest Mouse
•The Gaslight Anthem
•Cage The Elephant
•Fucked Up
•Best Coast
•Hot Snakes
•Titus Andronicus
•Gary Clark Jr.
•Lucero
•Roky Erickson
•The Black Angels
•The Sword
•A Place to Bury Strangers
•Liturgy

and so Metallica continues the trend of doing awesome things, followed immediately by horrible ones.

Death Magnetic (bad)
Solid long term touring behind it, with awesome openers, long/varied setlists, cool stage show and hitting every corner of the world (good)

Big Four shows (good)
Lulu (bad)

30th Anniversary shows (good)
this bullshit festival with a silly lineup and most likely an audience that will not give a fuck about any of them except A7X (bad)

Love Metallica... even black album, load, death magnetic (some songs on DM are better than a couple of songs on AJFA imo). St Anger was crap - songs are too long, the sound is jarring at first but what really lets it down is the way they obviously keep deciding to pad every song out a bit further by repeating earlier verses etc... almost every song on that album should have come in at 3 minutes or less. I found myself like almost getting out of my chair because I thought the song would end and then suddenly they carry on (for some reason). As weird as the guitars and drums sound I think it could have worked as a weird EP of blunter, shorter songs but they tried to drag it out

No solos was a bad move. But! that whole st anger comeback tour was fucking amazing... watching SOAD do a set of first album/toxicity songs as the sun set over reading festival, then metallica come on, I think the time off (relatively) did them some good, james' voice was great etc

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJ6PS5wXL64

Lulu is bizarre and to be honest it makes me laugh. It is the plan 9 from outer space of rock music. But that said I honestly don't doubt that it starts to get under your skin after a few listens

no theyre not, imo. I love Metallica overall, but theyre old men now. James' voice has been shot since the 90's. Kirk can play pretty sloppy at times, part. his solos. And Lars...well, the man clearly has no interest in keeping up with his craft and has become a piss poor drummer. It's embarrassing watching him flail his way through the faster thrash songs. Rob is a great bassist, but his stage presence is ridiculous/Fieldy-like. James is solid on guitar.

They def. give great energy back to the crowd, but they are a big ol' mess, and have been for at least 6 to 8 years, probably more. If you want a treat, find the 2004 Donington bootleg where Lars couldnt play, and Joey Jordison/Dave Lombardo filled in for the night on drums. It was like a whole new band.

don't even get me started at James' stage banter. ARE YOU ALIIIIIIVVVEE??? DOES IT FEEL GOOD TO BE ALIIIIIIIIIVE? ugh, STOP IT!

I love this band, and the love just grows with time.

There was a time when I wasn't totally impressed with The Black Album and Justice but now I am really starting to appreciate the songs especially after seeing them live. Shortest Straw is a monster of a track when performed live.

I think Load is a good album, ReLoad on the other hand has too many fillers.
St. Anger could have been better, with better production and perhaps making the songs shorter. The single version of Some Kind of Monster was an improvement for sure by making it shorter and having a better mix.

I look forward to the new album though not expecting anything ground breaking, expecting it to just be a progression from stuff we heard off Death Magnetic and Beyond Magnetic.

I'd rank their albums as such

Ride the Lightning
Master of Puppets
Kill 'em All
...and Justice for All
Death Magnetic
Load
MetallicA
St. Anger
ReLoad

Not since Dr. Suess has such lame combination of rhymes existed. I think I just insulted Dr. Suess! But seriously, I am a Metallica fan! I like EVERYTHING besides St. Anger. That album makes the Lou Reed album seem like freaking The Wall! I just laugh every time I listen to St. Anger and think, "Why didn't someone stop them?". The vocal wailing in the middle of this song sound like a retarded dog that is dying. Anyways, laugh away!

"Invisible Kid"

Invisible kid
Never see what he did
Got stuck where he hid
Fallen through the grid

Invisible kid
Got a place of his own
Where he’ll never be known
Inward he’s grown

Invisible kid
Locked away in his brain
From the shame and the pain
World down the drain

Invisible kid
Suspicious of your touch
Don’t want no crutch
But it’s all too much

I hide inside
I hurt inside
I hide inside, but I’ll show you...

I’m OK, just go away
Into the distance let me fade
I’m OK, just go away
I’m OK, but please don’t stray too far

Open up your heart
I’m beating right here
Open your mind
I’m being right here, right now
Open your heart
I’m beating right here
Open your mind
I’m being right here, right now

Ooh, what a good boy you are
Out of the way and you’re kept to yourself
Ooh, can’t you see that he’s not here
He doesn’t want the attention you give
Ooh, unplugging from it all
Invisible kid floats alone in his room
Ooh, what a quiet boy you are
He looks so calm floating ‘round and ‘round in himself

If you take the first half of Load and then tack on "Wasting My Hate", "Fuel", "The Memory Remains", and "Unforgiven II", you've got an amazing record. For me, "Bleeding Me" is their best song from the 90's. But aside from the singles, Re-Load is pretty terrible.

Here's how I think I'd do it. Maybe not this exact order, but these are definitely the songs I'd keep on; roughly 75/25 in Load's favor. They dodged a bullet when they decided to not release a double album.

1. Ain't My Bitch
2. 2 X 4
3. The Memory Remains
4. The House Jack Built
5. King Nothing
6. Hero of the Day
7. Bleeding Me
8. Where the Wild Things Are
9. The Unforgiven II
10. Ronnie
11. Mama Said
12. Until It Sleeps
13. Low Man's Lyric
14. The Outlaw Torn

I always liked them, too. It's weird you guys brought them up because I broke them out just this last week. I can do without Prince Charming, Better Than You, Bad Seed and a couple others, but overall it's good stuff.

St. Anger though, I still want my money back for that and I was a first day buyer.
I try to see merits in albums that most would judge as poor, i.e., Van Halen 3. That said, I hate St. Anger, and that's coming from someone who liked LuLu.

Even though the black album isn't complete shiite, Metallica still pretty much died to me after Justice. It's not so much that they went to a thrash band (honestly, how many more heavy albums could they have made with themes of war, drugs, etc.) to a hard rock band so much that the music just flat out blows. And James Hetfield attempted to do more singing along with the HEY YEAHHAHHH! crap. I'm still befuddled at how much more popular they get even though so many of their fans bitch about them... yet still follow them.

Bizarre.

The Memory Remains is the best thing this band ever achieved musically post Black Album both audio and video wise. I don't even like this band and find them grossly boring and overrated (also the worst of the "Big 4" thrash bands of the 80's/90's) but this song is excellent and has aged well. The music video is phenomenal as well.

Also for the record, I never liked anything this band has done either for the most part. Not a fan of even the 80's albums. I just don't care for them. So me saying this is a big compliment. Just my two cents anyways.

I like it a lot on S&M because the production is way better.

It might end up taking over the original Amazon listing (http://www.amazon.com/Kill-Em-All-Metallica/dp/B00EBDXYVO/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1460478890&sr=1-1&keywords=metallica+kill+%27em+all). Has anyone heard the KEA or RTL remasters? Thoughts?

These few lines from the Dynamic Range Database are accurate:

I have the original CD(s) from 1987/88 and also the 1995 Remaster(s). This is about the same loudness as the 1995 Remaster but it definitely has more punch and dynamics. It's not a wall of sound like the 1995 Remaster.

It's the standard 6-11 DR that we've come to expect nowadays from releases; I personally prefer these over the 1994/95 George Marino remasters. The digitizing of the cassettes for the bonus material turned out rather well, the deck being a Nakamichi MR-2. The main thing here, though, is the availability of the two albums digitally in 24/96.

More importantly, have they moved past their dickishness and allow us to actually HEAR Jason Newsted's bass lines? I'd like to see a Load/Reload edition, where one of the extra discs is a whittled down version of the best songs from each disc (maybe include alternate takes, mixes, etc. to set itself apart from the original recordings). Bruce Springsteen sort of did that for his special edition of The River where one of the discs was a single-LP version.

Sure, there are mistakes at times (Joey cannot get the tempo down for Four Horsemen for example), but that's b/c of the rushed nature of this coming together. Overall, both of them provide much tighter drums than Lars on his own songs. Lombardo replacing Lars full-time (esp. now that he doesn't have a full-time band) would be AMAZING.

musically, its got alot to like about it. good riffs, nice and fast. But as has been said, Lars is WAY too high in the mix. Even if his drumming was better and had more interesting fills to it, it would still be too high. It's distracting. Add in that the drumming is pretty straight forward, there's no reason for them to be this loud.

James' lyrics are laughable. Normally that can be ignored in metal, but some of the lines are given such a showcase in parts of the song that you can't help but focus on how goofy they are. Especially from an intelligent older man like James, with a history of great lyrics in the (distant) past. Bummer.

I'm surprised by the negative response. This isn't my genre really, and I'm not a huge Metallica fan... never really was. But this is the best sounding thing they've put out since Master of Puppets. Yeah, the drums are fucking loud and in your face, but they sit in the mix properly and finally sound good and aggressively heavy. I've disagreed with some producer friends about the tone of the guitars, but I think it sounds pretty classic heavy. Everything sounds great in this track except for Hetfield's vocals... I'm not just talking about the lyrics, which are predictable, but I don't care about lyrics in most metal music. It's just... They could have made this a complete shocker by distorting his vocals and dropping them in the mix a bit, especially for the verses.

It's the heaviest song from a mainstream band in ages. Not sure why people are so turned off by it.

I feel like there's an entire generation of people out there now who just grew up hearing Metallica lambasted as a bad joke of a band and the living, go-to example of 'selling out' and/or losing credibility, hence most of whatever backlash comes whenever they do anything new. While perhaps it's not entirely unmerited, I can't say I always find it fair.

Yeah, Lars is a little shit but the band's good output far and away eclipses their bad. I'm nowhere near the fan I was in my early teenage years, but I'll always give whatever they put out a shot. As long as the music's good I could care less about the band politics.

Load and Reload, while flawed here and there, get way too much of a bad rep, and Death Magnetic is a decent album; the Guitar Hero 3 mix is the only way to go to listen to it, however.

St Anger and Lulu are the only things I'd describe as staggeringly awful. I can't hate these guys; they introduced me to Motorhead, ffs.

Yup from what I've heard, they as a band are or were pretty far down in the hole financially, so they've been taking any offer they get. Hence the random X-Games concert and all the weird private corporate shows.

Metallica have been taking a lot of risks the last few years, and it looks like those risks are catching up with them financially. The band themselves admitted that their self-curated Orion Festival was a financial disaster (http://www.metalinjection.net/latest-news/james-hetfield-says-metallicas-orion-festival-was-a-financial-disaster) and their movie, Through the Never tanked (http://www.metalinjection.net/its-just-business/metallica-rationalize-why-through-the-never-was-a-box-office-bomb). Now, a new report from The Weeklings (http://www.theweeklings.com/j-m-blaine/2015/03/09/metallica-rock-city-a-conversation-with-into-the-black-authors-paul-brannigan-ian-winwood/) claims the band has lost more money than they have been bringing in since 2010.
The article interviews Paul Brannigan and Ian Winwood who just wrote a new biography on the band, Into The Black, and in tracking the band's expenses, he can't see how they're pulling any money in currently:

“Well, over the past five years Metallica have embarked upon a variety of vanity projects that haven’t exactly brought home the bacon. By their own admission, the two stagings of the Orion festival were disastrous financially, and the shambles that was the Through The Never movie cost $32 million and will only recoup a fraction of that amount. Factor in HQ staff salaries, crew retainers and assorted running costs associated with maintaining an entertainment corporation and you can easily understand why the band – of necessity now rather than by choice – are driven to tour Europe every summer. No one is going to shed any tears upon hearing Metallica pleading poverty, but over the past decade their margins will undoubtedly have taken a hammering.”
Later adding…

“The whole Through The Never film project was a horrible misjudgement, a misguided attempt to breathe new life into a decade-old idea. As the film spiraled horribly over-budget it’s hard not to imagine that at least one band member – and let’s be honest, we’re talking about James Hetfield here – thinking ‘What the fuck have we got ourselves into?’ Quite how that ‘script’ ever got the green light is an unfathomable mystery.”

What was really stupid about Through The Never is it only got a one-day release in theaters. Which is too bad because the movie is okay. You have to give them credit for going out on a limb with those projects. Not only that, but bankrolling it themselves now that they are an island onto themselves in the record business.

Both of Brannigan and Winwood's books on the band are great.

I think they got offered a gazillion dollars to be the first event happening at the new football stadium in Minneapolis.

It was the third event at the stadium. Luke Bryan (*gag*) played there the night before, and there was a soccer match between Chelsea and AC Milan on August 3.

But I digress. I heard the acoustics for Luke Bryan sucked. Metallica was better. I could hear everything from where I was. One of the mics seemed to be having problems, but other than that it sounded all right to me. It could be that Metallica was better prepared for that sort of setting. Hopefully the event staff at US Bank Stadium took notes on what Metallica did so that they can improve the concertgoing experience there. One thing for sure: that place is gonna be LOUD for football games.

EDIT: Not my video, but they played "Leper Messiah" live!

I wouldn't worry about them being broke. Black album constantly sells. If they stop making stupid financial gambles they will be rolling in that dough again.

Huh... Didn't know they were playing shows.

I agree reed with just about everything Jinsai said, other than the Master of Puppets comment- Justice was fantastic.

It's probably the production aspect, but the lack of bass, and the story surrounding that issue, it really bums me out. Listening to this new track on a good treated system, I think sure, take the drums (EG snare) down a dB or two would help, but I would love to have control of the vocal in this song.

i dont know what it is, but the sound/production/mastering is awful. the overall sound is just so terrible, the song is bad anyway but sonically something is just off with all their releases. there's no depth, no thickness....everything just sounds thin and weak. maybe someone with an audio background can provide some detail behind how a band can release something that sounds so amazing (black album...i'm talking strictly the sound) and revert to this awfulness.

Not too bad but where is the bass in that song?

Listening back to Death Magnetic and I still really dig a lot of it, just it sounds so flat on my good headphones. On laptop speakers/earbuds its fine, but cranking the volume it just falls apart. It sounds like every instrument is just right there on either side of you, in comparison, Load and Reload sound like a band really making the most of the studio and building a sense of place (I could never be a true fan, Load/Reload are my favourite albums of theirs...)

Heard there are some legal stuff behind the release of No Life....

how are they making these solid songs at this point? I'm shocked. Good for them.

James' lyrics are still weak though. He's so on the nose all the time. It's not clever.

Yeah, I'm shocked also. I thought the first single was sort of bad and, in general, I don't think their music is good save for a few pretty great moments. However, this new song was pretty enjoyable and makes me think there is potential for them to have some memorable songs this time. By far the best thing they have released since Load/Reload.
