It's a snowy winter valentine friday night. Perfect time to - Barry White voice on - talk about cocktails.
What's your tipple?

I recently invented one myself: it's called the "Neverending Winter": 1 shot of Maker's Mark, 1 drop of maple syrup, and a squeeze of lime juice. Goes down smooth...

Cocktail I was hooked on for awhile was Moscow Mules - vodka and ginger beer really. Gosling's makes a diet version so I don't feel like I'm drinking 30g of sugar.

First off, was excited to see that this is a thread.

I've been getting into Vieux Carre's since my foray into cocktails. It's a New Orleans classic! I'm going to NOLA in February for my bday and will be drinking them the whole time!

Equal parts: Rye whiskey, Sweet Vermouth, Cognac
1/2 part: Benedictine
2 drops [bitters]: Angosutra, Paychaud
Then maybe a maraschino cherry/lemon/orange peel (or any combination)

I myself am very much a whiskey man. I'm looking at that whiskey & root beer eversonpoe! Question: any whiskey or root beers to recommend? Are we talking Kentucky Gentlemen and A&W or scotch and a high end root beer?

junior's midnight moonshine & virgil's rootbeer. highly recommended.

our specialty cocktail for our wedding in three weeks: treebeard tea
2oz white whiskey/moonshine
2oz black iced tea
4oz lemon san pellegrino
1/2oz basil simple syrup

Made myself a "Dude Shake" the other night.

Make an extra strong White Russian (with Half & Half), add vanilla ice cream and blend. Enjoy.

I had a really great Manhattan the other day:

5 parts-George Dickel 12
2 parts-Carpano Antica Vermout (Barrel-Aged)
Peychaud's Bitters (dash(es))

-Really good, I don't know if it's b/c the 'normal' Angostura bitters are switched out for Peychaud's

People that make a perfect manhattan by mixing red and white vermouth need a slap in the face.

I just made a Parisian Manhattan last night:

Equal parts rye whiskey, red vermouth, St. Germain
2-3 good drops of Angostura bitters
1 cherry

-Another thing, wow what a difference it makes to use good cherries rather than shitty red#5 maraschino cherries.

Discovering different Manhattan varieties is my new cocktail goal.

It's London Cocktail Week. I've taken to microblogging it because I am perpetually drunk/hungover. My friend is being more detailed.

Had a ridiculously spicy bloody mary at lunch today, or rather a few sips of it.
The menu said "don't say we didn't warn you" but still: too spicy is too spicy.

The Clover Club Cocktail is a cocktail consisting of Gin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gin), Lemon Juice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemon_Juice), Raspberry Syrup (or Grenadine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grenadine)), and an egg white (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egg_white). The egg white is not added for the purpose of giving the drink flavor, but rather acts as an emulsifier. Thus when the drink is shaken a characteristic foamy head is formed.

shit, that sounds goooooooood

Typically anything with egg white just ends up tasting of sour and egg white. I like sour, but it's a bit blah.

I would tend to agree. I also tried to make something with gin, lime juice, cherry syrup, egg white and that lime flavor stood out like I would not have imagined.

After listening to Adam Carolla describe how he likes a little Rye topper for his Mangria (http://www.carolladrinks.com/), I decided to make a Mangria Manhattan using Mangria in lieu of sweet vermouth-it's pretty decent. Mangria even retweeted it (small victory:)).

We get this, works great: http://www.williams-sonoma.com/m/products/mulling-spice/

Use burgundy, add sugar.

We put it in a big tea ball, like this one from Crate n Barrel: http://m.crateandbarrel.com/mulling-spice-herb-ball/s248810

We did the Ina recipe without the star anise. It was good, though some people in the family just didn't get it. Their loss.

Next time, add at least a full cup of sugar. Keep tasting it until you get a good balance, add more sugar if necessary. Add brandy, too. Steep in a 4 qt crock pot. Use a ladel into mugs. That should convert them (oh, and use the Williams Sonoma mix, it's awesome). If the burgundy is too dry, use cab. We kept experimenting, it's chemistry. Sometimes we'd end up with something yucky like vinegar and we'd doctor the crap out of it. Other times it'd turn out perfect. It always makes the house smell good.

Three most important things we discovered in our years of mulling wine: (1) Patience is required, as the spices take a LONG time at LOW heat (hence why wine mullers love slow cookers), (2) SUGAR SUGAR SUGAR, (3) add booze, as cooking burns off the alcohol (do not bring the wine to a boil, as that creates an acidic yucky flavor)

Sugar?! Oh no this is turning into a replacement for cake, cookies, and fudge :(

I'll definitely give it another try. We used cider and cab. Brandy sounds good. A friend of mine does something similar with sangria.

Moscato Asti today.

I do, but in limited quantities due to migraines and hormonal levels. It's nice, actually, because I SAVOR, now, and I don't blindly overindulge. Very very rarely hard liquor; I had some rum eggnog and some Bailey's during the holidays, but in very limited amounts; I'm terrified of overdoing it. Once you've gone to the ER for migraines a few times, you do not wish to push that shit. I'm now on SEIZURE meds for migraines.

I actually got HIGHLY-coveted season ticket invites for NEXt in Chicago (https://www.nextrestaurant.com/website/faq), something G REALLY wanted. The 1st 2 (Bistro and Tapas) seem great, but the 3rd one (Terroir) is minimum $310 per person with 15 meal courses and REQUIRE TEN WINE COURSES PER PERSON. NO FUCKING WAY. I WOULD BE IN THE HOSPITAL.

Moscato Asti: THAT HAS MORE SUGAR THAN A BROWNIE!!!

Prosecco has pretty much no sulfites (sulfites are avoided by migraineurs) but - unfortunately - it's high in sugar. Champagne is low in sulfites and low in sugar. Ever read "French Women Don't Get Fat?" LOL. HIGHLY recommended!! Sure, she's not a great author but she promotes portion control. And champagne for all courses. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mireille_Guiliano

we made Gin Slings last night using a special limited batch bottle of gin that our friend gave us for x-mas. they were DELICIOUS. and it was our first time making a cocktail with bitters!

1.5 oz gin
3 dashes bitters
lemon twist
top with seltzer

i used lemon san pellegrino but sarah used lemon & seltzer, and i definitely put more bitters in mine (i really like them).

Those sound good. I haven't had gin in a long while. I have used bitters for when I'm nauseous. Seltzer with a dash or two of bitters, works every time. I have no idea why.

angostura bitters and the gin is the top one on this page: still crazy barrel river rose gin (http://www.mrdistilling.com/frame/products_seasonals.shtml)

I was looking to make something with mezcal and I came across a 'Last of the Oaxacans (http://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2014/04/last-of-the-oaxacans-mezcal-last-word-variation-cocktail-recipe.html)' (totally loving the Last of the Mohicans and I've been eating Oaxacan tacos lately). Then I read that it was a take on the 'Last Word (https://www.google.com/search?q=last+word+cocktail+recipe&oq=last+wor&aqs=chrome.0.69i59j69i57j69i60.1306j0j4&sourceid=chrome&es_sm=91&ie=UTF-8)' and as I don't have any Chartreuse, I used absinthe & benedictine (a google search said people search for chartreuse and those 2, so ... I came up with the following:

1 part: mezcal, cherry heering, fresh squeezed lime
1/4 part: absinthe, benedictine

It's interesting (I should have put only 1 part lime - I squeezed a whole one and have about 1.5 parts in my drink, and it's a bit tart). As for the mezcal, I'm thinking that it could be better [/more suited to my preferences] to go with gin or rye-unless you're one that loves it super smokey, then stick with the mezcal.

I'm going to start work soon at a brew pub and I'm terrified of the prospect of mixing drinks. I asked what were the most common and they struggled to think of at least 5 drinks that didn't include the ingredients in the name (gin and tonic, rum and coke, bourbon and coke, etc.) so that made me feel better. Dark and Stormy's are apparently two ingredients too but some make it fancy with a third ingredient. After that I just have to worry about...Margaritas, Tequila Sunrise...and...uh...I'm apparently given the right to refuse to mix a drink I don't know how to make because "we're a brew pub, buy our unique beers only brewed here" argument. Yay! Best first bar tending job ever!

Edit. Oh yeah, add martinis to the list.

dark and stormy's are traditionally dark rum, ginger beer, and lime. a fancy version adds angostura bitters.
margaritas are easy, especially because most bars just use margarita mix and tequila. but even from scratch, it's just tequila, triple sec, lime juice, simple syrup.
a tequila sunrise (which i don't think most people order anymore unless they're me) is just tequila, orange juice, and grenadine.

you'll do fine! it's classic drinks that are named after people that are hard to remember.

Gonna have to try that this summer.
