It's a solid 80's song. Can't wait to hear their take on it!

This should be interesting. As mentioned above, their take on it should be a different listen! The GWTDT OST and new HTDA is getting me really excited.

I just want to know if there will be a guitar solo like David Gilmour's. That's an awesome solo.

It'll probably be a synth solo. Or they'll do something really weird with it, like cover the song in Hungarian.

This is on the Threesome soundtrack, movie from the 90's. Def will be interesting to hear their interpretation of this song!

I like this song for a few reasons. Moody guitar, early 80's style sound, simple but effective lyrics, and I guess nostalgia for Legend. I think it was a pretty random choice, but I've always liked this song. Call it a guilty pleasure I guess. Anticipating the HTDA interpretation.

Evidently, Fincher likes it. For whatever reason he says.

I can easily imagine another iPhone app freakout a la "True Believers" on top of some guitar, which I would not mind at all!

Anyone else getting a strong vibe that this is totally gonna play over the credits? Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but it just seems perfect for that. I'm more excited for this movie than I am for Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and my next 3 birthdays combined.

Lyrics for the HTDA version

Is Your Love Strong Enough?

Just one step at a time,
And closer to destiny.
I knew at a glance,
There would always be a chance for me.
With someone I could live for;
Nowhere I would rather be.

Is your love strong enough,
Like a rock in the sea?
Am I asking too much?
Is your love strong enough?

Just one beat of your heart,
And stranger than fantasy.
I knew from the start,
It had to be the place for me.
Someone that I would die for;
There's no way I could ever leave.

Is your love strong enough,
Like a rock in the sea?
Am I asking too much?
Is your love strong enough?
Is your love strong enough?

Is your love strong enough?
Just one beat of your heart.
Is your love strong enough?

Is your love strong enough?
Just one beat...

Surprised the song's so vocal-centric, given that Mariqueen's more part of the soundscape in the EP, but aside from that I just didn't feel it. It's suitably chilly for the project, but I'd never listen to it outside the context of the film or the full OST. Too much ambience, too little melody.

Sorry, but Mariqueen's voice is so plain and unremarkable. She really needs to take some chances, especially standing next to such an emotive singer as Trent. The second half of the song is pretty sweet though.

Count me in the really, really liking it camp. And funnily enough considering Gilmour's involvement in the original, it very much felt like Gilmour's Floyd to me. '80s is sort of "in" right now with M83 and all, but I think this cover brings back a style of '80s music that isn't quite so vogue right now, and I dig it for that.

I don't hear *Amy* either.

I hear Mariqueen. I guess everyone gets out of it their own preconceptions. I will always think this version kills the original. As much as I liked Legend, this song always felt artificial. There's more of an authentic tone in this new version.

Hula
12-11-2011, 08:26 AM
It's okay. The instrumentation's lovely and the lyrics feel sincere coming from Mariqueen's mouth, but the vocals as a whole sound a little stage school until they really kick in 2/3 of the way through. I think it is the breathy thing; it sounds a little put-on and childish.

As cheesy and unflinchingly 80's as the original is, I feel it more than I feel the cover. That's not to say I don't like the HTDA version, but I'm not 100% sold on it.

Promethean
12-11-2011, 03:46 PM
Better than the original. Original too cheesy for my taste. This new version is more emotional and for the first time, I'm diggin Mariqueen's voice. Anyone else get an Ultra era Depeche Mode vibe from it?

Seems like I'm in the minority but the HTDA version is vastly superior to the original. I had to look up the Ferry version when the cover was announced and thought it was terrible. Being born in the eighties its my generation, and I dig some of the music, even some really cheesy stuff but that song is just awful. TR could bang some spoons together and gargle the lyrics and it would be an improvement.

Cover or not, this is a really good song. First listen gave me chills. I dig the EP and am really stoked that Mariqueen's vocals are so powerful on this track.

HOLY SHIT BATMAN there is nothing to censor here? Fangirly even?

Hula

Being born in the eighties its my generation.

Technically not. You were a kid during the 80's so your taste wouldn't have been rounded yet; the only affinity I feel for the 90's (I was born in '89) is stuff I heard years later from the part of the decade when I would've been too young to know what the word 'music' meant. Not entirely nitpicking here—I consider myself a fan of 80's music, never having really lived to hear it first-hand, and I think the original is far and away amongst the least cheesy stuff put out at that time.

I was born in the mid 60's and was a teenager in the 80's, therefor it is MY generation. It's not when you were born, it's the years you really start listening to music and forming your taste in music, and that would be your teens.

I started listening to music before my teens - I'd say I'm a 90s kid musically, although I was born in 1990, so I did have the whole decade.

I did a little as well. Partly because I had a brother 6 years older than me and I took dance lessons. So I had a little exposure to some 70's rock and DISCO baby! But that quickly turned into a lot of Van Halen (not Van Hagar), Zep, AC/DC and "arena rock". The rest is history.

I don't hear it either.Nobody really hears Phil Collins, either.

I was working the door at a club in the 80s, and this isn't what I'd consider an "80s" song. Nor is it a typical Bryan Ferry song. Isn't it an outtake from Roxy Music's "Avalon?*" It's a schmaltzy song. That Fincher likes. For some reason. I'm withholding judgment until I see this movie, as I'm assuming Fincher has some kind of "reason" for wanting to use it.

*edit: I guess the Legend soundtrack was mostly Tangerine Dream (you probably remember them most for Risky Business) trying to be Vangelis' Bladerunner soundtrack (http://www.amazon.com/Blade-Runner-S-T-Vangelis/dp/B000002IZM).

Roxy Music got a lot of shit for Avalon (http://www.amazon.com/Avalon-Roxy-Music/dp/B0000256VK) when it came out. Eventually people grew to appreciate "Avalon" and "More Than This" but it still ain't up there among Roxy's highest achievements, maybe because it was too 80s? I dunno, I was drunk at the time. The track does run over the credits, and is simply beautiful when it is filling a room. It's cranked up at the crescendo and completely engulfs the room. I saw people who were leaving stay still when it reached the peak, just because it was that good. Also, it might just be my ears, but I think the intro to the song was slightly different in the end credits.

Yes, I couldn't hear very well because people were leaving noisily but the intro to the end-credits version sounded like it started with very distant-sounding Mariqueen vocals drenched in reverb (not unlike they way they appear in the instrumental score), gradually growing in volume and presence until filling the room. Wow, this was a great surprise at the end of the soundtrack! Easily better than anything on the debut EP. I wasn't too familiar with the original, although I did see "Legend" a long time ago. It doesn't sound too 80s or dated, and I'd say overall a better version than the original (unlike "Zoo Station", which unfortunately didn't quite match U2's original).

This makes me excited for more HTDA. It would be great if they embraced a more traditional melodic approach. The debut EP was darker and more experimental, but it felt awkward and a little recycled. This track has completely redeemed them in my eyes.

AGREED. I am not a huge fan of U2 besides Joshua Tree, but I completely hated "Zoo Station". Not even the Trenticuss could make it better.
I am mostly hoping for some great beats and vocals from this project. Something totally funky and dancable!

I really like this cover and it's been stuck in my head today. If the new HTDA is anything like this I will be very pleased, this is simply gorgeous stuff! Mariqueen's vocals are definitely stronger, what a difference from the EP. At first I didn't recognize it as her singing and thought it was someone else.

When I imported into iTunes, it separated the two cover songs into a different album. Not sure if that's what is going on for you.

No it's definitely different. In the film her voice starts off way in the background drenched in reverb, and then slowly comes forward in the mix. Sounds great.

The song is definitely a bit different in the end credits of the movie. I actually liked it more. The album version, her vocals are SO dry. I dont hate it, but whatever effects they added for the credit version helped.

And why is everyone saying Phil Collins? He sounds WAY more like Peter Gabriel IMO. (both from the band Genesis, so I guess either way is fine)

Disagreed completely. The original is a decent song, but Trent and Co. made it stand out a lot more. If you really think this new version is even more bland than the original, I don't know what to say. I think they improved upon it in every aspect.

I think it's more of a polished t**d kind of deal. If you love the song, more power to you, I prefer Bryan Ferry's original to be honest. The HTDA version is a crispier version a la NIN-kit-sounds as we know them. The original at least fits with its 80's style production. The HTDA version is the type of cover that Marilyn Manson would do after he stopped working with Reznor. Like his cover of Tainted Love - the exact same song (with a different MIDI sound bank) as an even older cover done by Soft Cell. If you're gonna make covers at least re-imagine them and challenge yourself - like Coil did with their cover of Tainted Love.
http://vimeo.com/10243168

I think it's awesome that Trent and his wife are making music. This is a new era for Trent that I look forward to. I think they'll make better stuff than this song though. If they don't, and just keep rehashing old *nin*dustrial music with female vocals I'm afraid I'll lose interest.

The irony is that HTDA is supposed to be a tribute to one of the most challenging and groundbreaking musical constellations ever: Coil
If you're gonna use one of their EP-titles for a new band at least challenge yourself. I hope I get to eat up my own words once the LP gets released.

BRoswell

Why does every cover have to suck unless it sounds nothing like the original? I like Coil's version of Tainted Love, but not every cover has to be like that (or should be like that). This cover is respectful to the original, but has enough of its own personality to justify it's existence. If you think it's the same song with a different MIDI bank, then more power to you, but I definitely don't see how anyone could think that.

I've mentioned a few times how much I love this song, but I should also mention that my girls LOVE this song. They've heard me play it while driving many times now. I caught my 8 year old on YouTube a few weeks ago listening to it and pausing every few seconds to write down the lyrics (so cute). Anyway, they brought their iPods over to have me put new music on them and both insisted "You need to put Is Your Love Strong Enough on!"

Here's the thing about the Bryan Ferry cover: its purpose goes beyond that of just covering a song for fun and/or tribute, like say NIN's "Get Down Make Love." Covering "Is Your Love Strong Enough?" was a.) Fincher's idea (not the band's), and b.) recorded specifically for a movie - and no doubt always intended for the end titles. My point is that it's meant for more than strictly being enjoyed on its own merits: it bookends an experience, a narrative, and loosely represents the characters. I love the idea that "Immigrant Song" is Lisbeth's battle cry (Fincher's words), which to me suggests that "Is Your Love..." is like her lament. I've seen The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo 4 times in theaters now, and the HTDA cover feels utterly spot-on in terms of tone. I don't know how well a more adventurous cover would have fit - it may have worked better - but as it is, it carries the correct emotion. A movie just isn't the place to expect a ballsy interpretation. I'm not saying it shouldn't be, but when the team of collaborators is SO large (versus an HTDA album which comes down to 4 people including Alan Moulder), the music is more of a frame, and not so much the painting.

I never rush to leave the theater in any movie, but am especially glued to my seat during the credits of Dragon Tattoo. For a film that clearly won't have a Samuel L. Jackson cameo post-credits, that means a lot. Ultimately, the cover feels appropriate in its foremost context, and that's definitely worth something.

Does it deviate from Brian Ferry's original? Not too much, no, but let's not forget that Fincher has a producer credit on the song. I'm sure he wanted it to be relatively faithful - more of an update than a re-imagining. Again, consider that How To Destroy Angels were in a supportive role in this scenario. I wouldn't fret too much about the LP because they're master & commander of that material no matter what: they're making the kind of music they want to make for music's sake. I think we're all in for a treat... and this cover, whether you're a fan of it or not, probably isn't a taste of things to come.

This is ok, but The Space in Between was the best thing Trent has done since The Fragile. Liked it way more than the year zero with teeth stuff.
It gets better every time I hear it, its so dark and seductive. Real hidden depth to it. Her voice is good. Not exactly Liz Fraser but its good enough. I think I liked the song more becuase it did not have Trent's voice on it.

Its like a mixture of Portishead and Coil, Salem and Wendy Carlos's soundtrack for The Shining and dark minimal dubstep!!! I imagine Lindsay Lohan singing it rolling on the floor naked on one of her Benzodiazepine, hydrocodone binges.!!!!

Good points, I thought about Fincher's influence as well and think it's a valid argument for why things sound like they do.

I loved Fincher's idea for Trent to record Immigrant Song with Karen O, and as much as it derives from the original song it's still a provocative new monster by itself. Karen O's voice and uniqueness pretty much carries the song IMO.

It does seem every time I listen to the HTDA Ep I hear more of TRs vocals quiet and whispered in the background.
The production thus far is outstanding, although I woudn't have expected any less.

I'm pretty sure the answer is no, but since I have it, would it be all right to post the credits version of the song here? I ripped it from the 5.1 soundtrack on the Blu-Ray and downmixed it to a stereo track. The song isn't THAT different compared to the album version, but as someone who seems to have every variation on a NIN track, it makes for a nice companion to the original track.
