I also loved that first film. I thought it was one of the more underrated superhero origin stories as it had a great look as well as some humor that didn't take itself too seriously. I'm stoked for the next film.

Couldn't agree more. When I heard they were doing a Cap movie, I figured they'd fuck it all up and have be all futuristic, instead we got a legit 1940's origin story that tied in well with the avengers. I guess the winter soldier will be the futuristic fuck up, but I'll have to watch and see.

I agree. The first hour is perfect then the climax is a little forced because we know we have to get Cap into the Avengers, but overall a very enjoyable movie. The film probably needed another 15-20 mins of Cap in WWII missions or participating in historic battles. The Brubaker comic this second movie is loosely based on is a great addition to the Cap lore in the comics. Looking forward to this for sure.

Nerdgasm is an understatement, if that's possible. Without a doubt, the most exciting Marvel movie.

Surprised they downplayed the story of The Winter Soldier there, glad they did.

The suit's navy and clearly modeled after Steve in Marvel's Secret Avengers.

I figure flashback sequences because Agent Carter and Zola are supposed to appear. At the same time, it does look like it's taking place on the Helicarrier.

Saw a prologue before the IMAX 3D screening of Thor: The Dark World and OMG, why can't it be april already?! The prologue consisted of the elevator fight and an alternative trailer that showed new scenes of Black Widow fighting, plus Captain in his old costume. The final scene showed the Winter Soldier reaching down to pick up Captain's shield.

"Who the Hell is Bucky?"

It looks like they will follow the comic book story line pretty closely. I've always thought that in a way, Bucky's story is more tragic than Cap's.

The latest trailer's great mystery though is who is the dead guy that made the Black Widow cry?

I saw this earlier this afternoon, and it's fucking GOOD. Probably the best Marvel Cinematic Universe flick yet. The Winter Soldier, as a character, was so fucking awesome. Kind of reminded me of The Joker (as stupid as a comparison that is). Dude just shows up and straight fucks shit up.

There was too many feels and adrenalin to post about it last night (not to mention a splitting headache thanks to those stupid 3D glasses. Fuck you 3D, I hate you so much! And it was totally unnecessary for this movie)

Is this movie as good as The Avengers? Definitely. Is it better? An argument can be made that it is.

Anthony Mackie's Falcon was the good surprise. His Sam Wilson is believable, likable and reliable. We need to see more of him.

But the stand out is without a doubt Sebastian Stan as Bucky/The Winter Soldier. "Badass" doesn't even begin to describe him. He is terrifying. And he is a convincing threat to Cap: he's as strong as Cap is, highly trained in martial art, ruthless and while Cap has his trustee shield, the Winter Soldier has his trustee metal arm. You really believe Cap was is danger when facing him. At the same time, in one particular scene, Stan shows so much pain, vulnerability and confusion that it has me convinced that Bucky's story is ever more tragic than Cap's. Steve Rogers volunteered for the super soldier program; Bucky never asked for anything like this to happen to him.

I'm a cry baby so I did cry during a couple of scenes (if you've seen the movie yet, you'll most likely know which ones).

I did make a happy noise at two words: Stephen Strange

And OMG the Glow Stick of Destiny! Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch! And boy, how creepily awesome were they?

Also did I spy with my little eye some Newman's Own product in Pierce's fridge? Because that would be so fucking sweet that I would cry again.

I'm going to see again for sure. It is worth the splitting headache. Oh and the GotG trailer was shown before the movie. I really am warming up to that Raccoon!

Alright, I'm here, I'm coherent, let's talk about the Winter Soldier.

Almost entirely in spoiler tags.

Fucking Christ, I was so upset when Sitwell was revealed to be a HYDRA bastard traitor. It totally makes sense to use him, because he's existed in the MCU for years, and it really, really hurt to see that he was a villain the whole time.

On that note, the entire HYDRA plot blew my god damn mind. The way it was tied into other films had me going, too - Sitwell was there for Thor's arrival, which meant HYDRA was there. Senator Stern tried to claim the Iron Man armor for the government, AKA for HYDRA. Completely insane.

The way Zola was done was just as great, too. I had a hunch he'd still exist in the present, but for him to be such an integral part of HYDRA's plans - indeed, even more integral in the end than the Red Skull himself - was incredible. It was really amazing to see that room light up and his stupid dopey face appear on the screen.

And Fury's eye, that was a great reveal. I had to think about it for a second, though - I guess he programmed his damaged eye separately so that it couldn't be removed if he was booted from the database.

Anthony Mackie's Falcon is already one of my absolute favorite characters. He and Steve are a lot like Tony and Rhodey but in reverse. Black Widow acts as a great foil to Steve, too - it really was "Captain America and Black Widow: HYDRA RULES THE WORLD rather than Winter Soldier.

So, I have a question, regarding the mid-credits scene. Loki's staff was previously implied to be connected to the Tesseract's Infinity Stone energy, but the way it's done implies that it has its own power not related to the space-warping that the Tesseract does. Is it, in fact, its own Infinity Stone? That feels a bit retcon-y.

As for placement, easily at or above Iron Man 1, just below the Avengers. Maybe even equal to Avengers, I'll have to watch it once or twice more.

orestes
04-04-2014, 05:51 PM
Well, von Strucker remarked that Loki's Chitauri scepter has a power unimagined by SHIELD, so it seems like they're continuing to lay the groundwork for Avengers 3 and Thanos. What I'm curious to know is if it's controlling the twins.

The bunker scene was so creepy.
@marodi (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=125): Steve and Peggy feels!

Heck yeah! That and the end of the last fight scene between Cap and WS when Cap tells him he will not fight back because *sobs* he's Bucky and he's his friend *bawl* Oh God the feels!

Also I want to see Tony's reaction when he learns that Howard and Maria were killed by the Winter Soldier.

And now I have the urge to watch Three Days of the Condor and All the President's Men.

As far as infinity gems/stones, the blue one connect to Lok's staff is the Mind control gem. So therefore, I believe HYDRA has the twins under their control. Which will probably be where Avengers: Age of Ultron starts.

As for the movie, fucking fantastic. It's really great to have Marvel building this cinematic universe, and they could have easily rested on their laurels or backed up the Brinks truck. Instead we get a top notch film, great acting, probably their best overall film thus far and a great segue to future films.

Loved the movie, I could have sat there and watched Cap 3, I wasn't ready to let go.

Oh also, right before the final fight between Cap and Winter Soldier , you can see me as a Shield Agent running through the lobby in the Triskelion ;) It's very brief but it's there. But the movie was fun and it somehow wasnt jingoistic trash.

bobbie solo
04-06-2014, 09:19 PM
what's great about it thematically is that is exactly the opposite of jingoistic. Cap openly distrust and questions his gov't and the movie acts as somewhat of a symbolic indictment of what our gov't is doing nowadays in real life. This all happens behind the straightforward awesome action & plot. I loved this movie.

My 2 cents: yes, you could watch The Winter Soldiers without having seen the first movie but without the back story, you would lose a lot of the finer plot details in this one.

There are those who hated The First Avenger; for my part I loved it. My suggestion: why not make you own mind about it? :)

gorast
04-07-2014, 01:06 PM
I think the problem with not watching Cap 1 is that you lose a lot of the emotional depth that the sequel brings. Without Cap 1, Cap 2 isn't about a man out of time trying to fight off the demons of his past and the threats of the present - it's just a dude in a stupid outfit running around fighting random people. With conspiracies thrown in that, again, have much, much less weight without the background of Cap 1.

Watch Cap 1 before Cap 2. It doesn't matter if you absolutely hate it all the way through - you will still feel every twist of Cap 2 that much harder, just having seen the events of the first film.

AgentofChaos
04-07-2014, 02:25 PM
I loved Cap 1. For me it's right up there with Avengers and the first Iron Man. I may even prefer it to Cap 2. It just had such a charm to it, and Hugo as Red Skull was incredible. Either way It's essential viewing IF you want to care about the universe. If you just want to be entertained you can do fine without it.

Warner Bros is going to back down, I bet. Cap is very, very strongly established now, and the new DC universe has almost zero establishment.

I gotta be honest guys. I didn't really care for the flick. Yes it looked great, had great acting and action. But my god the story and plot holes just killed it for me. I have to start with the scene that left the worst taste in my mouth. THE GODAMN TALKING COMPUTER FROM THE SEVENTIES!!! Was that really necessary? I mean I was literally laughed out loud in the theatre when the reel to reel computer started talking. This and the fact that Hydra waited 70 years to reveal itself is just waaay to farfetched for me, even by comic book movie standards.

I also spent the first hour of the movie waiting for Fury to comeback. I'm getting a little tired of the "he's dead, surprise! no he's not!" routine. This is standard practice in a lot of hollywood movies, but this is the marvel cinematic universe! Would it kill them to keep someone dead for more than a half hour? Now if Nick Fury came back in Avengers 2, that would have surprised me. It is also going to make it hard for them when they actually want to kill off a character because it won't have any weight to it.

I did really like the actor playing the Falcon, and his part was well written. But how he became Falcon seemed rushed. It was like "Hey I used to be in a whole mechanically winged flying military team, but there's only one set of wings left, let's steal them!" and then the wings are destroyed later. Is that the end of the Falcon then?

I don't know. I'm gonna give it another shot, but this is definitely ranking really low for me compared to the other flicks in the MCU series. I liked Cap 1 waaay better. Maybe they should have kept him in the 40's....

Just saw this and liked it a lot. I think the producers knew about Bucky's rep as a lame character, and actively wanted to flip that and make him a badass motherfucker. Well done.

The whole time as I was watching it, I was thinking: whoever is producing the Metal Gear Solid movie should contact the directors and writers of this pronto. Their portrayal of future war tech, action, character moments, and their deft handling of the political expositions and double crosses(which could've easily been convoluted and messy) would work very well in Solid Snake's universe. Get those guys, get Hugh Jackman for Snake, and I think they're good to go.

That's canon in the comics though. Being able to upload your consciousness into a computer is very standard Marvel fare actually. I think it should be remembered that these are adaptations and the source material will always be more far fetched. We are sort of spoiled by standard movie logic which is usually way less playful and daring (especially in Amurca). Im really happy that Marvel is breaking away from that. Shit like that is what makes the comics so great imo so obviously I loved that scene ^.^

It was Ed Brubaker that wrote the Winter Soldier storyline in the comics. The producers just decided to translate the story to screen. It really is one, if not the best Cap storylines in the comics I might add.
