Ladies and gentlemen, it's with the greatest pleasure that I present, Saul Williams.

He may be having a concert in my city in a couple of days. I'll be dead tired but I will go anyway. It's a must.

I wasn't sure what I thought of Volcanic Sunlight at first, but over time I got into it. It's probably my least favorite album of his, but that's not a bad thing. I really enjoy it now. I think I might have been expecting another NiggyTardust, which was a bit foolish on my part.

Volcanic Sunlight > Niggy Tardust

The reason is because I feel that Volcanic Sunlight IS Saul Williams.

I got an email from my brother tonight saying Saul is playing in our area in Feb., at super, super small venue called Maxwell's in Hoboken, NJ. This place has a bigger bar/restaurant area than it does a concert space and it's AMAZING. I've seen Kenna, The Black Angels, Autolux, and most recently Russian Circles there. I met someone from the band 3 out of 4 times, and always have a great experience. One of those places that is so intimate that it can make a good show great. Needless to say, I am fucking PSYCHED to see Saul there.

Nice. I'll be going to the Orlando show at The Social. I missed his date there on the NiggyTardust tour (which may have been a good thing since he performed sick that night) but the venue is amazing.

Yay! I've been looking forward to seeing Saul Williams live again, and even better, headlining! The last time, he was one of the opening acts for Les Claypool, and most of the audience wasn't happy during his performance :(.

It was part of the CMW festival so there were three other bands on the bill; Saul himself didn't take the stage until about 12:30 and the show ended around 2am (NiggyTardust giving Axl a run for his money)! CX Kidtronik did a short warm-up at midnight and stayed onstage to play us out after it was over.

I hit up the Vancouver show, but I have to admit, it wasn't as great as the time I saw him supporting Niggy Tardust.
Not sure, but the only song off of Volcanic sunlight I like is ROCKET, and he never ever played that one live.

I was extremely dissappointed in the lack of Niggy Tardust material, as that's the album that got me into him, but I went into the show knowing this was a tour supporting his new album. So on one hand, I kinda knew what to expect.

The new stuff is pretty good and his band does an amazing job of playing it live. But, from what I've seen, nothing connects with audiences like the material from his self-titled album does. Those songs just smash the crowd every time and always have.

Like I said in my recent bump of the Mindless Self Indulgence thread, I've been taking advantage of downtime stemming from a broken old camcorder rendering me unable to continue transferring my old DVC video bootleg tapes and A/V-synch complications with my newer HD gear to finally post some of my old footage I never got around to posting for whatever reason, yet happen to have sitting around ready to go anyway.

Which brings me here!

My Mic In port was broken in early '08 so I couldn't use my external mic and had to rely upon the crappy built-ins, but when I heard Saul Williams was bringing Niggy Tardust to our nation's capitol I just COULD NOT resist. Absolutely HAD TO FILM IT in WHATEVER capacity.

And then I surveyed the venue. Gah!

The 9:30 Club is fuckin' AWESOME, but daaaaamn is it bootlegger-hostile. I saw LOTS of people getting shut down and harassed for simply taking pix with cellphones and disposable cameras so I knew there was no way in HELL they'd be cool about my camcorder. Ugh. So I went to the balcony and prepared to film discreetly from the rail but then at the last second fortuitously took notice of the fact that the venue had "spotters" with flashlights and radios communicating to the bouncers on the floor from little alcoves above and beside the stage!

Bah!

Unfortunately, there was no time to re-position and I just had to adjust and roll with it.

So I set my camcorder on the floor of the balcony and shot the whole show from between the bars of the railing by tilting the flipscreen up and nudging it around with my foot as needed, lol. Improv ftw!

I mean, kinda.

It was a supremely difficult chore to say the least, so it's occasionally off-center with no zooming whatsoever...but wtf, it is what it is.

Which, btw, was a FANTASTIC fucking show.

He killed it, brought his daughter out, she killed it, and they even did "Gunshots by Computer" from Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D, so FUCKYEAH, whatever it takes, right?

Plus, what with the direct involvement of my boot in the process, it's about as "bootlegged" as a bootleg can be, so y'gotta love that, lol.

;)

Anyway, I'm not too up-to-speed with song titles so if anyone could help a nigga out with an accurate setlist that'd be MUCH appreciated.

In the meantime, here you go!

I saw Sauls's show last night and while it was good and Intimate the show lacked overall in many ways. For instance, he played only songs from his new album, not one song from any other album, and while I usually wouldn't care but the album isn't even out yet so it was a bit strange trying to connect to the show. Another thing that was weird was he only played for 45 minutes, and at the end of the last song " he gets arrested and carried off the stage". Literally everyone in the whole crowd thought he was coming out and then bam the house lights came on......it was extremely anticlimactic. One thing I really enjoyed, but everyone else in the back or upstairs must have hated, was soon as the show started he jumped off stage and made a circle in the pit and started to perform right on floor in the middle of the circle. On a positive note, the new album sounds great, the beats are aggressive and creative-think of the album "Saul Williams". The lyrics I can't comment on them because I don't remember but they all flowed nicely and were melodic but were mostly "rhymes " not like how Niggy Tardust was kind of sung, if that makes sense.

The merchandise stand had one mustard yellow shirt with the cover art on it, and a poster of the tour with Saul's face drawled on it. I got both because I wanted to support Saul and I kind of liked it.

Saul played in Budapest, Hungary a few days ago with the David Murray Infinity Quartet. It was an amazing performance. I had the opportunity to make a short interview with him (he only had a few minutes, because the band members were tired and had jetlag - they just arrived from the United States).

It will be available in Hungarian language, but if anyone interested, I would love to release it in English. We talked about Lennon/Ono, other artists, NiggyTardust and Year Zero as well.

I am a music journalist in Hungary, but I don't know where to publish it in English. Any help would be appreciated. :)

To those that have listened to MartyrLoserKing: did THESE MTHRFCKRS (https://vimeo.com/122190466) make it on to the album? A simple 'yes' or 'no' will suffice! If it did, I'm fine with being surprised by which track it's on :)

where? my usual sources show nothing, and a google search will lead me through a sideshow circus of malware and pop up ad pages.

Safest bet is sticking to the official NPR stream (linked in this thread and across all of Saul's social media) until the commercial release.

Hooooly shit, it was wonderful.

I listened to it alone in the middle of the night with headphones on, just like I had done with NiggyTardust when the free download popped up on nin.com (eight years ago? Time fuckin' flies). I'm glad he went back into the darkness instead of making another Volcanic Sunlight (which I loved for what it was, but, for the most part, it lacked the bite that drew me into Saul's music in the first place). Of course, there are beats here and there that sound CX-y, and the occasional Trent-y influence can be felt (like the droning guitar in Think Like They Book Say), but now they are only mere elements in Saul's broader sound.

I had tried to listen to as little of the album as possible, since I had spoiled myself by listening to ACSAO, Burundi and Clock-bike (and did so repeatedly due to their awesomeness). Now, I can honestly say I'm glad Saul made one of his best albums ever, packed with very clear and powerful messages, an amazing sonic palette (once again!) and, of course, Saul's breathtaking performances.

Welcome back, Niggy. (Nuthin'!) Shuddup.

On the track Ashes, I wasn't sure if the phrase "Dancing on the corpses ashes" was a term borrowed by At the Drive In from somewhere else or something they came up with... I tweeted Saul if it was a nod to ATDI in and he fav'd it? I tweeted Cedric what he thought about the track and his response was "On point!"
Regardless, real good track... I'm liking this album.

This album will be in rotation. I really like "All Coltrane Solos At Once." I better dig in to the lyrics here. Lots of (messages/information) (filtered through/contained in) Saul's artistic creation. Truth is uncompromising. I watched an interview with Saul where he talked about style and substance. What Saul does is use style to package the truths he wants to tell. He compared this to commercial artists who use style to package what they think people want to hear. He talked about striking a balance between style and substance. Without an interesting style, not many people will want to hear your message. So he basically uses style as a tool to propagate his messages.

I feel like I want to link in to his network as many of us have linked in to Trent's. What I mean is, we have explored many of Trent's interests, inspirations and ideologies/beliefs. I want to do this with Saul. I'm especially interested in the books he has read.

He also worked with Kanye West during the making of 808s and Heartbreaks. The genius of Kanye is that he recognizes excellence and he tries to absorb it into his creative arsenal in order to better himself as an artist.

listening on vinyl right now and it's quite good. wish it came with a download code or an amazon auto-rip, but oh well.

anyway, in the liner notes, it specifically credits that line with being from the ATDI song as a lyrical sample. so it was definitely intentionally used from "invalid litter dept." (which was the first ATDI song i ever heard and is still my favorite).

Anyone else participate in Saul's recent AMA (https://www.reddit.com/r/hiphopheads/comments/4477at/ama_this_is_saul_williams_ask_me_anything/)? (AMAs are the only time I'm ever on reddit personally)

He answered my question which was "Why leave THESE MTHRFCKRS off MartyrLoserKing?" His cryptic response = "it belongs to the future"

Making that answer even more cryptic, he said earlier in the AMA that THESE MTHRFCKRS is the song he's most proud of. Very interesting.

Videos for 2 of the 3 songs played that evening were posted a while back by The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. The third song was a mix of many of Saul's different lyrics from Niggy Tardust woven into a poem with similar music playing. It's too bad there isn't a video for it, at least not that I can find.

The weirdest part about the bonus tracks on the CD release was probably the fact that two of them were already readily available elsewhere - and on full-length releases, not just on a b-side somewhere. “List of Demands,” as far as I could tell, was tacked on there solely because it was used in some popular sports commercial at the time of release. Such a strange and obviously marketing-driven choice.

I’m excited though! Count me in. Curious to find out more about it before RSD. I’ll probably snag one either way though, especially if it’s gonna be under $100 and actually available in a brick and mortar store.

Don't own the CD, but I have the original vinyl pressing, maybe and I should take a look at the spectrals on a rip of that to see if there's lossy copmpression anywhere in the mastering chain. Would be a drag, but I don't remember it sounding all that amazing anyhow (surface is a bit noisy). The original FLAC is also my favourite version of the album.

I just have to say it’s great to see people freaking out about Saul Williams. He’s incredibly gifted.

Catching him in Atlanta when he came on stage for "Survivalism" and "Banged and Blown Through" in 2009 was probably one of the coolest random concert events I've ever experienced. I'd just been getting into him recently at the time (completely missed his time touring with NIN, it was just before I'd started listening to them) and was slowly digesting his discography, and being immediately pulled in by Niggy Tardust. I'll admit, knowing Trent produced it played a huge part in me checking Saul out, but since then I've been waiting and waiting for a chance to see him play a proper solo show. After reading a couple accounts of what his concerts are like, I can only imagine what a blast they can be. Someday!

Gah damn, I was SO MAD when I eventually learned that Saul opened for NIN in Wichita, KS (30 minutes from where I lived, and all my friends were there) in 2006. I had heard they were coming nearby. So, the night of the show, checked out With Teeth for the first time, and after making it through "All The Love in The World," the rest is history. In hindsight, I'll bet my little 16 year old mind would have been BLOWN getting introduced to Saul a couple years earlier than I was.

I'd actually be ECSTATIC to see Saul tour with NIN again. I feel like right now would even be a fantastically poignant time for those two to join forces on-stage.

Well, I meant the upcoming Black Friday RSD. As far as I’ve known it’s happened every year for a while! Sorry I didn’t clarify, though. These will be available this coming Friday. But if I remember correctly, these are a “RSD first” release, meaning we may be seeing more pressings afterward?

Got to my store around 7:20 this morning and there was already a line of about 20 people. As soon as the doors opened I hightailed it for the Saul record beause that was the priority and grabbed either the last one or the only one. As I'm grabbing it some guy asks if that was the only one then a few minutes later I hear another guy asking for it so I got here just in time. I'm happy.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181123/4284649bce414edd327e169fa3076864.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181123/c9fdf2f30f8e398b041d5ef063fbd01a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181123/51f407e88e29548015160e961502ec22.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181123/b6b520c0c8bf60909729196eeb7e7c3c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181123/9f7ddddc00fcfa9c156d81d71ccedab0.jpg

Got the last copy at my store this morning, and I got there nearly an hour after they opened. Good quality pressing and package, nice that some care went into this. I noticed that the spoken word intro (apparently voiced by Alan Moulder) before Niggy Tardust isn't present on this vinyl version. I used to have an original pressing but I don't remember if it was missing there or not. This pressing sounds very good, definitely glad I sold my original a while back and ended up with this reissue.

It's not. Guess this is pressed from the same digital files as the original vinyl pressing... new inner artwork looks beautiful indeed! Love that spatter of starburst colour on the vinyl itself.

I ordered a copy on eBay for pretty close to what it would have been in store, as I'd have to drive over an hour to get to the nearest record store. Gas cost would probably be about the same as what I paid for shipping.

The original version had some slight edit differences. It may be worth your time to track it down. When I made my Saul playlist, I mixed download and cd tracks to make a ‘complete ‘ version of the album.

I remember having the original version around the same time I also burned albums on CD-Rs for backup cases. Hoping to see if I did burn it I went through a bunch of them but unfortunately nothing for Saul.

I think that intro's the only thing missing on the physical version, but it's been a while since I compared them. I do remember that the CD/vinyl has an ever-so-slightly longer outro for "Skin of a Drum" and a complete intro to "WTF!" (on the download it's cross-faded with the ending of "DNA").

there really aren't many differences. like botley said, slightly different edits to a couple songs. I'd list which version of what track I used, but that was on an old iPod that I don't use anymore.

Pretty simple, the Fader Label licensed the album from Saul to put it out with bonus tracks in 2008, every version since then has that part cut out of it. It's literally only on the original independent download, every other version released since (streaming, CD, vinyl) is the Fader version with bonus tracks and no spoken intro.

Project Update #12: Neptune Frost by Saul Williams
Posted by sloan
Jun 29, 2019

Greetings One and All!
Last year around this time I was excited to announce the musical I’ve working on Neptune Frost & asked for your help. Today I’m please to announce that we will begin shooting in January, your rewards are on their way and the first I’d like to share with you now: the mixtape TOMORROW REVEALS TODAY. Forgive the delay. I needed to finish Encrypted & Vulnerable in order to determine which songs I could include on this mixtape. These are a collection of mostly late-night demos from Encrypted & Vulnerable and MartyrLoserKing sessions, unedited, with uncleared samples, yet otherwise all me. I share these ideas in raw form with both exuberance and humility. The difference between these songs and the album - which you will be able to hear on July 18th -is that these songs never crossed the mark of me calling in other friends and musicians to help me finish them. They are experiments only brought to completion through the act of deciding to share them with you. From my hard drive to yours. I’m sharing them under a singular index, as one complete listening experience, to avoid the sample police that may show up if I were to make an act of releasing them individually. Of course you're free to do as you choose. It's out of my hands... Enjoy!
Here’s a track list.
Tomorrow Reveals Today
What She Sees As Church
To Be Real
SXPWRVLNS
sinners vs. losers
So Much Anger
Uncontrollable Urges
Lift It Up
A Horse A Snake & Horns
Agents of Change
The Little Ones
Syrian Dust
Canteloupe
South Junior High
Everything -Rone ft. Saul Williams

In terms of uncleared samples, I wish I had a better ear for this. There's a few I can't quite catch yet but on So Much Anger there's a nice deep cut off a Gang Starr track

I'm assuming he's fine with whatever happens to the tape now when he says "it's out of my hands". If someone wants to share it, I doubt it would be an issue, especially since there are unauthorized samples on it.

Digging some of the sounds on the new album, but it also feels like it meanders too much. I feel like it could have been a good, solid mind-punch had it been a little more concise.

I like it! One of my few complaints about MartyrLoserKing is that it felt a bit too "safe" musically despite its (as always) excellent lyrics and performances, kind of like an edgier Volcanic Sunlight (which is still a guilty pleasure for me!). With this one, he seems to go bolder and weirder, and I hope he keeps up with this direction.

BTW, I have spotted the sample in "Before the War" in at least two other tracks (the latter actually produced by two friends of mine). I guess it's from a commercial sample library or something.

edit: the first link was taken down by its uploader just a few hours after I posted it, and I forgot its title. It wasn't even saved in my youtube watch history.

Gave the new album a spin. The singles work so much better in context. I haven't given it enough time to formulate an opinion, although I did enjoy what I heard. Almost Massive Attack-like in places.

Saul is producing the next Tanya Tagaq album and I'm so erect.

Awesome news! Saul is a lauded poet and performer but he doesn't get enough credit for his music writing and production.

Still haven't delved deeper into the new album. It's definitely one of Saul's more enigmatic releases; MartyrLosrKing was excellent, but it played it a bit too safe in places, and needed some grit. Encrypted & Vulnerable is a puzzle that feels like a more subtle version of NiggyTardust's feel; just as angry and frustrated with the world, but in a more "encrypted and vulnerable" way, if that makes sense. It's like the times have become so scary and depressing that making a NiggyTardust 2 would be futile, so, instead, the narrator (maybe MartyrLosrKing, maybe one of his followers, maybe something else entirely) "encrypts" his rage inside these songs. Still, no kind of encryption is completely invulnerable, with hackers everywhere...

Another meaning would be that the hacker-protagonist is actually trying to unlock the secrets of the government, housed in an encrypted, but vulnerable way, and it's up to the listener to decode it. I know I'm reading too much into the title and not the songs themselves, and that's because... it's too early. If I start dissecting the songs, it could take me seven thousand posts. :P

About half of the songs were slightly reworked tracks from MartyrLoserKing. Anyway, worth checking out if it's playing near you.
