well, @Final Destiny (http://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=228) bought a copy of my 7" EP (http://eversonpoe.bandcamp.com/album/monument-ep), which is pretty awesome! thanks so much, seriously.

i am almost done working on my new album, Primal, i just need to get my vocalist recorded and it'll be finished.
i took things in a slightly different direction, adding more electronic elements while still retaining an organic core. i've been listening to a lot of swans for the last several months, and it definitely had an influence.

right now i'm giving all the money i make through my bandcamp page (http://eversonpoe.bandcamp.com/) to the theater company (http://tympanictheatre.org/) for which i work, doing sound design & original music. the show we're about to put up is insane (it's entirely in the dark) and i've gotten to do so many songs for it...i'm quite excited.

anyway, trying to bump this thread since i've never gotten any responses here, and i think a lot of you ETSers will enjoy my music. i'll post again when the new album is done.

p.s. all of my music is Name Your Price, so if you like it, PLEASE download it. i do not care about making money off of my music, i really just want people to hear and enjoy it.

Julia Pastrana by Everson Poe (http://eversonpoe.bandcamp.com/album/julia-pastrana)

this is the soundtrack for the latest play on which i'm working. we open this weekend, but in the mean-time (or if you don't live in chicago), you can check out the soundtrack.

it features awesome sound design and music by me, and incredible vocal performances from the entire cast.

if you like it, it's pay what you want, starting at just $2, and all of the money goes to Tympanic Theatre Company (http://tympanictheatre.org), which is a 501c3 non-profit where i am a company member.

the play is based on the true story of the two german guys who got together and one of them killed and ate the other (at his request). in the play, they're american, and it's definitely a bit romanticized, but it's a really good play. lots of unexpected humor and tenderness.

ah, yes, i am familiar with the case i believe. The man wished to have his penis bitten off, and the two planned to eat it together, right?
But instead they had to resort to cutting it off and, oh jesus, bleeding to death from having your penis cut off must be awful.
I am obsessed with strange things like this, and surely i'm thinking of the right case.

Your musical output makes me feel lazy and unaccomplished. I need to set some fucking goals. ;)

https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a0834124570_16.jpg

i wrote & recorded the music & lyrics for this song back in november, and my friend Nina did her incredible vocals a couple weeks ago. this song is extremely close to my heart, as it deals with issues of being trans and feeling stuck, like you can't do anything about it; longing for the transformation that will allow you to be who you are. it's a daily struggle for me and expressing it this way was so cathartic. i hope you enjoy the song and consider buying it to help me donate some money to Center on Halsted (https://www.facebook.com/CenterOnHalsted/), who help support the LGBTQ youth community of chicago (all proceeds for the first 30 days go straight to them).

my new triptych album is out!!!

https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a0584310112_16.jpg

https://eversonpoe.bandcamp.com/album/the-body-is-not-sacred-complete

here's what my amazing friend dan caffrey had to say about it:

For the last decade, Maxwell Shults has recorded a dynamic body of work under the name Everson Poe, exploring everything from doom metal to new wave and even the occasional '50s slow-dance song. No matter the genre, their music has always been characterized by heaviness—not just in sound (although they certainly embody that, too), but in emotion as well. And their latest project, The Body Is Not Sacred is, without question, their most emotionally heavy work to date.

Exploring Maxwell's gender identity and struggle with gender dysphoria, the music embraces duality to convey two distinct halves living in the same being. Maxwell's visceral howl—a sound that many would characterize as being typically "masculine"—contrasts with the softer, ethereal vocals of longtime collaborator DEROSNEC. Both of their faces grace the album cover, embracing gender fluidity and making it hard to tell where one person ends and the other begins.

The duality extends to the arrangements and lyrics as well. On opener "We All Become Our Sins," a crackling spoken-word intro and ghostly wail from DEROSNEC quickly give way to Maxwell's jackhammer drums, guitar, and voice. Likewise, on lead single "No Comfort In The Void," Maxwell screams the phrase "I strive to reject the masculine in all its forms," subverting what listeners and critics have come to expect from even the most emotionally in-tune metal music.

The Body Is Not Sacred has no shortage of ambition. As Everson Poe's first triptych, the self-titled first section contains the four songs that serve as the album's foundation. Part two, The Body Is A Prison, raises the emotional stakes with four hard-hitting instrumentals, and the third and final part, The Body Is An Illusion, consists of "polite" versions of the songs from part one. Softer and more reliant on acoustics, the compositions are what one might call "feminine."

But as The Body Is Not Sacred proves, these kinds of labels mean nothing in the world of Everson Poe. Through their latest and greatest three-part epic, they present a journey where gender is first a puzzle, then a cage, and, finally, nonexistent.

I love that cover!

thanks! nina (derosnec) is a fucking wizard. she took a picture of me that's four years old where you could only see half of my face, then took a picture of herself to match, and merged them together. i don't know how she does it (but she also worked on the VFX post team for the new Antman movie so she's pretty fuckin' talented).

hopefully we'll be putting out a video for "no comfort in the void" at some point that explores the gender-related themes on the album. i'm pretty excited about it.

new album now available on my bandcamp (https://eversonpoe.bandcamp.com/album/reviens-moi-sang-de-mon-sang)

this is about 100x more accessible than my last several releases, with zero screaming, and 4 of the 6 songs are actually upbeat!

each song was inspired by a different piece of pop-culture. (in track order) • Hannibal (tv series), The Hazelwood (book), Hellraiser (films), Night In The Woods (video game), Metropolis (film), and Channel Zero: Candle Cove (tv series)

also, i’m donating all the money i make on it from bandcamp tomorrow (while they’re waiving their fees) to Brave Space Alliance, a black-led, trans-led LGBTQ center in Chicago that's currently running an emergency food pantry

if you can’t afford to buy the album now but feel inclined to help me spread the word and raise some money for a good cause, any sharing on social media is super appreciated.

working on an EP of covers that i'm going to use to raise money for Chicago Mutual Aid.

pretty much done with 3 of the 4 songs (pj harvey's teclo, low's anon, and the cure's the figurehead). was originally going to do "the aeroplane flies high" by the smashing pumpkins as my fourth song, but i'm thinking of doing "distilled" by blonde redhead instead.

anyway, i'm at a point in my musical journey where i feel really confident doing a cover and having it sound like a balanced blend of the original song, but done in my style. really happy with how these are turning out so far.

Choosing between your children, which releases do you feel are the Top 3–5, and if possible, why? Any reason is valid, from experience to technicality.

Even though I rarely comment in your thread, I consume everything you do. I'm genuinely interested in your answer, as your discography begins to grow.

wow, thanks, jon! <3

in no particular order - the great disruption, four deaths, and monstrous existence are my three favorite albums i've done. (though i'm also really excited about my upcoming album)

the great disruption was the first album where i started incorporating blast-beats and (knowingly) elements of doom & sludge metal. i've never really cared about genre so i always just do what i feel serves the song. but that album was directly inspired by me starting to listen to some stuff in genres i'd never really checked out previously.

four deaths was the first album (not a theater score) where i ever did absolutely everything myself, so it's a special point of pride. it's also the heaviest thing i've done, both musically and thematically, and i'm really proud of that, too.

monstrous existence feels very balanced, very ambitious, and, so far, like the pinnacle of what i'm capable of creating musically. i really, really love it. and it was also the first thing i ever had released by a label. the fact that i cold e-mailed the guy who runs it and was just like "hey, you're awesome and you release music i like a lot. do you want to release my album? it's completely finished and literally ready to go today." and he responded within six hours with a positive answer tells me i'm definitely doing something right.

i think "the root cellar" off "there is a hole at the center of everything" is the most beautiful song i've ever made.

and i think "with obsidian knives" off "the body is not sacred" is probably the best way to introduce people to my style in general? idunno, it feels like a good thesis statement.

i think primal is my most frustrating album. it has so much potential and some really good songs, but it's definitely bloated, and the mixing is far from my best. if i could cut it down to a shorter album, i think it'd be much better.
scrying, the leviathan, ø, coyote, lamb, wolf, (your teeth are like...), (...your skeleton on the outside), and seed. if it was just those songs, it'd be great. coyote, lamb, and wolf are a perfect trifecta of songs, too. i really love those three in a row.

thanks again for listening, it means so much to me <3 <3 <3

That reminds me, on Tidal, Track 3 artists are listed as "Everson Poe, Modaff" and Track 4 lists "Everson Poe, Mordaff". I agree with all of your assessments for that release; I've found it to be exceptionally replayable.

Thank you for your full response, and the music that you make.

"the thief's altar" was borne out of improvisation inspired by one of my favorite aaron turner projects, Jodis.
recorded & mixed in two days back in july, super pretty, plenty loud, no screaming.

not that i'm not proud of all my music, but i'm especially proud of this one. it's a perfect sibling to Monstrous Existence (which is why they're going on a tape together), and having the support of a label to get my music out there and help me find a wider audience has been amazing.

In recent years, the best metal has been that which ignores convention and walks freely across genre boundaries. Under the Everson Poe moniker, Mae Shults has exemplified this fact for over a decade, but they’ve truly outdone themself this year, releasing three albums (one post-punk, one metal, one electronic) with a fourth soon to follow.

Rituals may be the Everson Poe’s fourth album of 2020, but it is nonetheless an expansive, ambitious affair, full of both beauty and devastation. This much is proved by new single ‘Fallow/Hallowed’, a slow-burning doomy number inspired by a disdain for religious zealotry.

“Despite the original inspiration for the song being a scene from the cartoon show Gravity Falls (wherein Bill Cipher offers Gideon a handful of deer teeth), ‘Fallow / Hallowed’ is rooted in the same thematic world as the rest of the album: rituals and religion,” Shults tells us. “To that effect, it seemed fitting to utilise parts of Häxan [for the video], the semi-documentary about witchcraft through the ages.”

Astral Noize is thrilled to be bring you this enchanting, bleak track a month ahead of Rituals‘ release date. Check it out below then head to the Everson Poe Bandcamp (https://eversonpoe.bandcamp.com/album/rituals) to pre-order the full album.

i got a GLOWING review for my new album today and i literally cried the whole time i read it.

among the praise is this

Everson Poe gives us a truly remarkable offering of doom, death and depressive suicidal black metal. This was easily one of my favourite albums of the year and in my opinion stands up to many of the classic doom death albums of the 90s. The raw and emotional vocal performance is perfectly paired with atmosphere laden instrumental work to form an album that will engage and impress from start to finish. The album is themed around ritualism and tells four stories, each of which you need to hear.
•••
All I have to say is WOW, what a listening experience. This is easily one of the best albums of the year, at least in my eyes and I highly suggest that all of you listen to it. Whether you’re a doom fan, a black metal fan or a death metal fan I'm sure that you will find something that you love about this release.

the reviewer also messaged me on IG to continue talking about my music. the fact that i touched them SO deeply with something that i created is all i've ever wanted out of my musical pursuits; for someone to feel what i felt when making the music. it's incredible and i'm so happy. can't wait for the album to come out on friday.

Took me a couple of minutes to get used to the way you sing. Passed that time, I enjoyed it. It felt "surrounding", if that makes sense. I'm thus currently having another go at it.

Thanks for sharing. Hope you'll keep doing this.

wow, thank you!

yeah, i tend to go for a sort of claustrophobic feeling when i mix. i want you to feel like you're INSIDE the music, so i'm glad you got that out of it!

if you want more like this, i would highly recommend "monstrous existence", my album from may, as it's kind of the sister album (and if you buy a cassette of rituals, monstrous existence is on side b).

https://eversonpoe.bandcamp.com/album/servant

i have a new album up for pre-order that releases on march 3rd. digital and limited edition "black box" cassette.

here are a few words about it:

Everson Poe (Mae Shults) returns with her newest foray into narrative storytelling on Servant. The tale of Medusa as a trans woman that acts as an allegory for Mae's history in abusive and manipulative relationships, which almost led to her death on multiple occasions, Servant is her most emotionally heavy effort to date.

Continuing her fascination with folklore and mythology, Mae has focused on one of the most tragic figures in Greek mythology: Medusa. Born one way and forced to be another by the abuse inflicted upon her, then exiled and isolated until her untimely demise, she seemed the perfect representation of Mae's experiences.

Musically, Servant is a continuation of the signature Everson Poe style—completely ignoring any loyalty to one specific genre, and instead crafting long, intricate pieces of music that flow seamlessly between sonic landscapes.

Everson Poe incorporates the talents of several collaborators on this release to bring voice to Medusa, allowing Mae to scale back the use of her own voice and only utilize it to add emphasis and gravity to specific sections of the music. Co-producer db (Euphoriadic Studios) returns to help shape Mae's sound into something unique, and also contributes vocals to one song and bass/keys to another.

Join Everson Poe as she pleads with the gods of Mount Olympus for release from her servitude, only to find they are just as cruel as any human.
