For Isis to say they reached what they wanted to reach creatively and stopped as a band because of that, then releasing this last song on vinyl:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjEr5bEU1Sw

....totally leaves me scratching my head. Sounds like they had plenty more to offer to me. I love that song.

I'm stuck on them. It's the only band I can consistently listen to and never feel tired of their songs. Panopticon never feels old to me, I really hope they'll get back together.

If they ever got back together it would be quite a while from now. Jeff Caxide had a solo-ish album come out (called Crone). Aaron Turner has been playing with Mamiffer and House of Low Culture. Aaron H. is mixing the new Jakob album. But either way. They left a legacy and went out on their own terms. The last show I saw them play was one of the best I've ever seen.

Isis broke up? :(

Live VI is probably my favorite from the Live recordings. I really hope they make a comeback and play some shows more.

Anyway, Aaron Turner did the growling vocals on this http://splitcranium.bandcamp.com/track/sceptres-to-rust, apparently a new side-project.

And the other Aaron is producing the first LP of Mental Architects - a Bulgarian post-rock band with an unique sound. Check them out:

Love, love, love this band. Such a shame they broke up, they had the potential to put out one more awesome album, at least. At the same time, I totally respect that they disbanded when they simply felt like it, and didn't let their success affect that decision.

Favorite albums for me are Panopticon, Oceanic and Wavering Radiant, in that order.

I dislike this band and don't understand why people like them. I don't like Neurosis, and Isis always seemed to be Neurosis-lite. I think Isis would have stood a chance with me if they'd had a singer and had redeemed their proggy meanderings with some good melodies/lyrics, instead of all that screaming, which totally turns me off.

Screaming? It's more like growling than anything. I can see why most people wouldn't like them...they aren't very accessible. But as far as this type of music goes, they are one of the easier bands to get into. Isis' first 2 or 3 albums could be called Neurosis-lite but their later stuff is hardly that. If anything, they surpassed the Neurosis inspired sound long ago. I don't think anyone considers this band a proggy band either. What they write is fairly simple but pretty powerful.

Either way. It sucks they broke up but pretty much everyone in the band has released or worked on something since then and there's some good stuff out there. I'm most excited for the Mamiffer/Locrian collaboration coming out this month. I heard a few of the tracks and it is by far the best thing either band has worked on.

"
Also we are compiling some material for a new CD of B-sides, demos, alternate versions, and other unreleased tracks, AND a DVD containing all of our videos in HD, along with an unreleased video for the track "Piable Foe" previously released on our split 12" with the Melvins. That's our story and we're sticking to it. Thanks!"

Justin K. Broadrick produced Live V. I find that awesome, as they covered Godflesh's Streetcleaner in one of their early EP's. Who was the producer of Live VI?

Turner decided to close Hydra Head Records:

Hydra Head Records has never been a smooth-running operation. We've spent the majority of our existence excitedly scrambling from one thing to the next, taking on more than we could ever possibly hope to achieve, and never quite finding solid footing in the midst of our self-induced whirlwind of chaos. Though not every second of doing this label has been enjoyable, it has been a very rewarding and meaningful project for me, and I hope for many of the other lives to which it has been directly connected. The fact that it has lasted close to two decades at this point is astonishing, and much has changed during that time - the lives of those directly involved with running the label, the bands and artists we've worked with, and the nature of the music industry itself. Though many of these changes have been positive, or at least illuminating, the impact of our history and current industry circumstances are culminating into a slow and somewhat painful death for the label. It certainly isn't an entirely unforeseen event, but we didn't think it would come quite so abruptly, or (perhaps naively) ever.

The decision to pull the plug has not been an easy one, and in some ways is a not a choice at all. The simple fact of the matter is we've been running on empty for a while now and cannot afford to keep our doors open for much longer. Years of imbalance between creative ideals and financial realities, personal problems amongst the label operators, an unwillingness to compromise our aesthetic standards, a tendency towards releasing challenging (i.e. unmarketable) artists, and the steady decline of the music industry in general, are amongst the chief reasons for our inability to continue. It is a harsh but undeniable reality, and one which we are attempting to confront with as much integrity and grace as is afforded by the circumstances.

For the short term we will continue to operate as we have been, effecting our first step into shutdown this December, at which point we are cutting off new releases from the label. Thereafter, we will be remain operational only in the interest of maintaining our back catalog, with the ultimate aim of repaying our rather sizable debts. Grim though this prospect is, in the midst of it all I still feel an extreme gratitude for everything that has happened and for all the wonderful people with which we've been involved over the years. We've been lucky enough to work with some of the most unique and provocative artists of the last two decades, many of which have made indelible impressions in the underground, and by extension the larger world of music in general. We've also been fortunate to have had the support of a small but loyal following, who've constituted the very essence of our life force. We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude and love to each and every person who contributed to making this label what it is - all the artists who entrusted us as the custodians of their work, all the people that bought or listened to our releases, and all the people who performed the various label duties at various offices (and houses) across the continent.

...and this brings us to the present moment, where in all honesty we are in need of financial assistance from anyone and everyone who's willing to throw us a rope. Though it is highly unlikely we'll be able to resuscitate the label, we do wish to follow through on the final round of releases to which we're committed and pay off our debts to our artists and manufacturers. In order to do this we are initiating a massive sell-off of everything we can dig up and produce for the next 6-12 months. This will include discounted bundles of CDs/LPs/posters/etc, represses of certain titles for which we still have parts, test pressings, and whatever worthwhile items we can pull together. For anyone that is able and willing to fund our funereal arrangements please visit our direct mailorder (http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001KFdIOEWqIyyAGY3KkpZ2A8m0BxuDpqbIhQ_3uI y-jwoLuvZtSNaslv7TscF_2cdidbzXv03TUIrElB-H_YB4EFuexLMo2odomIng1qzv1imFBd3tVbAmIsXdxb6v6lOaG K-WOgTnZ_hLGMM1rnnu5xpKGu8vnIIzzY2kdn3RPPvNAsarh5yIn ghSYHvWTS_L_8BX7vlKOOLT0z3FesHvD5wlG2u6DiuJ7ZwnU2L ybst7_r7ny5i8ercCRqamqrNkX3r--1mZ0E63QcXTEVoSMfYU2S76myH9LIr5kKyoyY3l4h8sW29vgMZ 4BpygmvtIB1rA-FE-64GaadGmeuUmjg==) or webstore (http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001KFdIOEWqIywjXHRMetrGzi6b_qyGsnRtjqn2vu PslCZf3nhJ0eNk5X9XzuPrWSNJeKob-t2GhxuKgRPLWpOsZI_GMz0A8KX-T5YOCFW31nua8Al6ig13lrneAzzzw5PibuEdE_phnSdJTPfc0h xN2uq2QhaYGCkrm5KKnNX7cfgE88QjFjtVXbu-Poenehqb4A5FYO43rsiL2X6iHthVRktUVGoS3hBBnCfdRNEdVX 9S0X81FW6rpD8zO42gVboxDfkQdheSRIC4YbjnHRvS8xsVpHo0 vr-Cq4rRCIl1Tmi5iTmnoFyhthhORJw_03396s0S2mhk6W8Cpp__N Js0ng==) and pick up whatever you can. Any and all support is greatly appreciated by our remaining team, and will be put to the best use possible.

There is no way to sum up nearly 20 years of incredibly important music, experiences, and evolution other than to say a big heart felt "thank you", and that we hope this closing will provide an opening into other even more positive and rewarding experiences for all of us and all of you who have been a part of our shared experience. For now we bid you all a very fond farewell....

I saw MGR (Michael Gallagher's project) live this spring as a part of 5-band post-rock/metal festival, where he played two slow ambient numbers with only him on guitar (sounded much like everything he released so far) and then continued with two or three heavy Isis-like songs, backed by the guys from A Storm of Light (who also played later as headliners).

These heavy songs is what I'm interested in, I didn't recognize them neither as anything he released himself nor as Isis covers. Can you?

Probably a good thing the band ISIS is no longer around, if only because of their name.

Love the band, but considering the terrorist group under the same name…yikes.

That's cool, I didn't know he was still doing stuff as MGR. Nova Lux was one of my most played albums a few years ago.

I don't recognize that heavy song. There's still some MGR stuff I haven't heard, but I would guess it's a piece of his fleshed out? Or maybe new material.

I actually prefer "The Deal" over the "Ape of God". Nothing against Santos in Gloom but Nick Yacyshyn's drumming really bring some groove to Aaron's riffs. I found the songs more structured at times compared to Ape. And yes I agree on the Brian Cook/Aaron Turner combo, I do hope Sumac tours more later this year.

now that i'm nearing the end of side four, i'm definitely going to agree with you about the drumming. however, ape of god feels more FULL to me, and i love that. the deal is definitely more raw, which i also love. i think at this point, they're pretty much tied for my album(s) of the year.

I went to see SUMAC last night and wow, Nick is amazing on the drums. He fucking killed it. Talked to Brian as he was manning the merch booth and asked how he divides his time between this band and Russian Circles. Apparently Aaron works around RC's time and if there is a schedule gap that's when SUMAC goes out. I also asked him about Botch and they are still are talking but nothing serious is in the talks. I picked up the new album on CD and vinyl and it is good.

Random Tidbits:
-Fryette Power Amps aren't reliable. It went down during a song. Aaron and Brian tried but gave up on fixing it.

For me Wavering Radiant is also their pinnacle. I've said this in other threads, but I really like bands that release their best (for me) album late in their careers. You have Isis, Garbage with Strange Little Birds, Deftones with Koi No Yokan, Foo Fighters with Wasting Light, Rammstein with Liebe ist für alle da.

I have to admit that I don't listen to this album enough, probably due to the fact that it was released in between my 2 favorite ISIS records. Panopticon blew me away the first time I heard it and remains one of my favorite records to this day, and Wavering Radiant is equally as stellar. Ipecac newsletter today had this tease:

"MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR JULY 26TH AT 1PM ESTWe'll be launching the pre-order for two special releases on our US and UK webstores!
You'd travel the ocean with grinning mouths for these, trust us."

And Isis posted this on Facebook.

Sadly there's almost zero chance of that happening. The reunion for the Caleb tribute show in LA is likely the last time those guys are gonna play together. Most of them have said as much in interviews since then.

Bad blood?

No, but the band just stopped being fun for everyone. Most of them didn't really like the last two albums they put out. Touring as Isis was no longer fun for them. That final show felt like the coda for them. They enjoyed it, and they felt it brought Isis to a close in a positive way.

I think Aaron Turner is the main reason they will never reunite. He has stated he didn't like the last album at all (he's delusional)....Based on what he does with his new band Sumac, he is content to just growl like a grizzly bear on every song now.

Don't make assumptions. Most of them feel that way. Many of them have talked about it. Most recently I heard Jeff Caxide talk about it on a podcast (https://everythingwentblackmedia.com/everything-went-black-posts/2021/6/9/ewb-205-road-to-ruin-004-jeff-caxide). They just weren't happy with the last two albums (In the Absence of Truth more so) and didn't enjoy touring together anymore. It wasn't just Turner.

Totally agree. I'm sad they led to the end of the band but I'm glad they exist.

Wavering Radiant for me is their best! Second place for me is Panopticon and Third Oceanic. Bonkers to hear they didn’t like WR.

WR was the only album of theirs that was produced by "Evil" Joe Barresi. Could it be that Aaron didn't like his production?

Sumac is pretty challenging music. It's basically free form death metal. Very obviously Turner wanted to push boundaries and do it in a different way and different direction. I think in listening to wavering radiant I can see why he thinks they were spinning their tires

I tried listening to SUMAC and other bands he is/was part off many times, but I just cannot get into it.

The last two albums are definately not as good as the ones before but they still have some amazing songs in them...Holy Tears, Not in rivers but in drops, Threshhold of a Transformation just to name a few.

In the last years the main substitute for ISIS for me is Cult of Luna, these guys are amazing and continue to deliver some smashing albums and dont even get me started on the live shows...

I remember Buzz from The Melvins saying he thought their last album was their best one and he was excited to hear what they were going to do next and was shocked that they quit. I dug the last album but I thought Panopticon was their absolute pinnacle. It merged the sound between the Oceanic era and the ITAOT era perfectly

that song is phenomenal…to me the song is the ultimate embodiment of running away from an unseen force, but there’s no point in running, that unseen force is all-seeing, all-powerful. Hard to explain.

I agree with you. The way the song reaches its climax in the earlier portion feels like the initial “running,” and then the rest of the song is just succumbing to / accepting the inevitable, whatever it may be. For some reason it feels peaceful.

I love how "So Did We" just begins with a "BAM, WE'RE ISIS". No ambient intros, no nothing. Just a post-metal blast in your face.

Also, anyone aware of this rarity (http://theobelisk.net/obelisk/2014/06/10/isis-celestial-pre-release-bt/)? The fact that they "borrowed" the artwork from Godflesh is hilarious to me.

My shop is having a 25% off sale all this week on shirts and hoodies (https://www.vinyldevotion.fm/collections/shirts-hoodies) and we have a TON of Isis merch along with several other Hydra Head bands.

If there's a specific Isis shirt you're looking for that you don't see, let me know and I will check if we have it as we still have a bunch of Isis shirts to post.

No code needed, discount will be added automatically at checkout. Thanks!

This isn't really new, as much as a mashup of older art from the two releases.
