This has been bounced around the forum for a few months now, probably best to have a single thread for it.
The story of it seems to be: Dave Grohl finds out Sound City is being stripped, asks what's happening to the Neve sound desk, buys it and before he moves it out has a big ol' musical party with a bunch of his friends.

New track from the Soundtrack feat. Corey Taylor (aka that guy from Slipknot), Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick), Scott Reeder (Kyuss) and of course Grohl himself (http://www.antiquiet.com/news/2013/01/listen-to-corey-taylor-dave-grohl-s-sound-city-track-from-can-to-cant/)

Pretty rad imho.

That was awesome. I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I never knew Alain wrote "Hangin' Tree" - further proving he's a genius!

*UPDATE*
I just got back from the cinema. What a fucking awesome movie! I haven't smiled like an idiot through a movie in a very long time. Honestly, if you can, go see this movie!

Thank you, Mr Grohl, for making such an epic documentary.

Holy shit. What an awesome fucking film. The soundtrack is going to be amazing. I could listen to a whole album of Dave, josh, and Trent.

I wish Dave, Trent, and Josh would make an album. Hell, Dave and Rick should make one too

Yeah that song was sounding good too. I can't stand Stevie Nicks but even that song sounded cool!

I think I hyped it up too much in my mind. It was very good. Too much McCartney towards the end though...
Very cool, I especially liked anything that contained Trent, Josh Homme or Ross Robinson.
Oh yeah, and the intro monologue... Jesus, how cheesy can you get Dave?
edit: I almost fell off my chair when Josh played the bassline Trent had proposed SO MUCH BETTER than Trent. Say what you want about who's the better musician, but Josh is definitely better in just oozing sexual groove

Yeah that was pretty funny. It oozed awesome when josh started. not to be shown up, Trent added some droning guitars !

Absolutely amazing documentary, that any fan of these musicians must see. Josh and Trent are my two favorite musicians ever (and Dave is up there too) seeing the 3 of them together was so awesome I felt a wave of emotion come over me.

Funny to see Trent just flip through Guitar Rig presets like I have a million times.

What a great movie. This should be required viewing for (rock) music fans. Also, way to win at life, Dave Grohl, fucking hell.

This was ridiculously great. I'm going to have to join the chorus that Josh, Dave and Trent need to collaborate more often (and also that Josh made that bassline way better). I was also really enjoying the Fear collaboration.

This was so good. The part with Trent and Josh was great, but I really enjoyed the Paul McCartney bit, as The Beatles were also my first band. Tons of great moments and quotes, though my favorite has to be:

Dave: Why can't it always be this easy?
Sir Paul: It is.

A real must-see for every music and rock fan in particular. And man, that song at the end with BRMC? Too good to be true! Grohl really made it in life! I just love how every song recorded for the soundtrack stays somewhat true to what the constributors usually do. You can definitely hear everyone's style in each and every song they did for this film. Had a huge smile on my face for the whole movie!

One thing that slightly confused me was, did Sound City actually close down or did that lady just get fired, and WHY did she get fired? Sorry if the answer was in plain site during the film, I somehow missed the answer.

Really really dug the film though.

It closed as a commercial studio in May 2011.

I liked watching all the old vintage stuff of Tom Petty et al recording, but when everyone started to pontificate about 'feel' and 'warmth' I dozed off. That third act of the film, however, when everyone gets together at Dave's studio to record through the Neve board is the BEST SHIT EVER. Stevie Nicks had me in tears just doing her first rough vocal take, holy fuck.

...and honestly, using photos of Gary Numan to demonstrate everyone "going digital"? At least use some from the tours when he wasn't using DOZENS UPON DOZENS OF ALL-ANALOGUE SYNTHS ONSTAGE.

I found this a surprisingly dull documentary. Dave seems like a really likable guy but i could not really figure out what this film was trying to say.
Something about his attitude seems rather regressive.
The mixing board was obviously great, but a lot of the records featured in this documentary i would not consider classic by any means. The place was no Abbey Road.
Black Rebel Motor Cycle Club song at the end was good though.
