I thought it was pretty horrible throughout (maybe even worse than Strays.) Cash-in album with a few legit songs scattered amongst the filler.

It looks like there will only be two quality albums from this band, which is a bit of a shame considering how much talent they've had throughout the years.

They did a concert with Lady Gaga and J-Lo. This hurts. I'm glad Eric Avery chose not to rejoin the band again. He doesn't need to degrade himself with this bullshit.

Great Escape Artist was pretty fucking awful. I thought it was worse than Strays as well. Eric is just the secret weapon, he's probably the guy who said things like "hey, that doesn't sound good, we don't need to do that". GEA just sounded like a bunch of half baked ideas rolled onto an album. I will say on NIN/JA, these dudes still fucking killed it on stage.

I enjoyed Great Escape Artist, through and though. Leagues better than Strays and a good new age Jane's album as far as I'm concerned. I seen the video days ago, was cool.

Yeah, I'm with you on that. Strays had some good songs, but there were moments that were forced and whatever. I enjoy the last album a lot more. Feels more like Jane's being Jane's than Strays did. I blame the production on Strays for that. Ezrin was a terrible fit.

imail724

Tgea is shitty for a jane's album but not too bad by itself. Strays is just a shitty album all together.

Not gonna do a one-line review of the record, as that in NO WAY does justice to this band. They're on form as far as I'm concerned. There are a few moments I quibble with production-wise (time-stretched drumkit — yuck), but it's a huge leap above Strays. Navarro got himself some monster guitar tones!

Looking forward to seeing them live on tour again next month...

I've gotta agree. And as far as I'm concerned, this is as close to old Jane's as as we're going to get. Which is really awesome, because they seem like they've gotten back in touch with their pre-Strays sound and made it fit in with their new form. I'm gonna try my hardest to see them in Kansas City, but if not, at least I can say I saw them on the NINJA tour a couple times. I imagine a theater show would be a hell of a lot more fun than an amphitheater, as far as these guys go (not that there was anything wrong with seeing them outdoors, but more intimacy with the band is always a good thing).

I love that Navarro actually seemed to recognize me in the crowd last night, haha. Amazing gig at Massey Hall; "Three Days" was the best I've ever heard it sound and the new songs all kicked ass. They skipped "Irresistible Force", but "Underground", "End to the Lies" (Dave singing backup on the choruses!) and "Words Right Out of My Mouth" more than made up for it.

It was also great to hear a stripped-down mini-set in the middle with "Classic Girl", "Jane Says" and "I Would For You"!

I don't have tickets to Lollapalooza this year, but I am going up to see Jane's Addiction play an "afterparty" show separate from the rest of the festival.

It was just a free pass from a pal of sister but I'm TOTALLY psyched about it. Never been a really big fan, but I've always enjoyed their music and they definitely kicked ass at the NIN/JA shows. Hoping to get away with filming again!

Anyway, while trying to refresh my memory and prepare for the show tomorrow I finally went ahead and uploaded my footage of their last NIN/JA show.

Enjoy!

I now own the new album. Barely worth the buy, still. Those cringe-y songs.

08-02-2012, 05:15 PM
What are you cringing at, exactly? I don't have any problem with these songs; they sound like Jane's songs, with Perry being his usual flamboyant self and the band doing its thing behind him. I don't mind people not liking it, but I don't understand why fans of their old stuff sometimes give the same things they supposedly don't like on the new stuff a pass just because Eric was involved in the recording.

I liked it. Felt more like a JA album that Strays did.

ImTheWiseJanitor
08-02-2012, 05:40 PM
I liked it, too. More than Strays, but I still don't think that was a bad album, either. It was the first piece of work from them I'd really listend to, and it just didn't feel like a "Jane's Addiction" album - once I became more familiar with the band, anyway. Still pretty happy I get to see them again after the NINJA tour!

I'll probably keep mentioning that I have an extra ticket/poster for the Nebraska show on the 25th if anyone's interested in meeting up. :P Of course, I'm moving in less than two weeks, so there's a chance I'll find someone up there that wants to tag along, too. My very few Jane's Addiction-loving friends won't be close enough to make the show.

This is the best band i have ever seen in my life . It was years ago. But i will still love them unconditionally for that performance.

I never thought their records were masterpieces, their records meant shit, compared to their performances, live they just created this real unifying vibe. It was a vibe that did not seem fake. It was pure ecstasy when i saw them. No drugs were involved but they were so good i just had this surge of energy for everything afterwards. Everyone was freaking out reminiscent of the 60s. Metal guys dancing with transvestites. Crazy.

Tracks like Three Days, Mountain Song, Jane Says, Stop, Ocean Size, Been Caught Stealing sound BIBLICAL live.

Dave Navarro may have done a lot of stupid shit since Janes Addiction but he was a titan on guitar that day i had never seen anyone play so well. He was only in his early twenties then. Perry Farell was like Freddie Mercury on Acid, he was probably even camper than Boy George at the gig, he is such a great frontman.
Live they were something else, last saw them at Reading Festival in 2002. Without Eric Avery. But it still blew me away.

Still have an extra ticket for Saturday's show! And a autographed poster, whenever that ships to me. Hell, I might even give that for free if someone just wants to buy the ticket for like, $60 or something. I paid $100 for the ticket/poster combined through the Jane's Addiciton site, so I think that's fair. Orchestra C, Row E! I just wanna go with somebody I know'll enjoy it.

(I'd ask someone around here, but I haven't even lived here for a week, and none of my roomies are into Jane's or BBD.)

ImTheWiseJanitor
08-26-2012, 12:24 PM
Their show last night was MILES better than the two times I saw them with Nine Inch Nails! They really shine in a theater setting. It felt like everybody in the room was connected and sharing an amazing experience. I always thought Jane's was a band about excellent showmanship, and they really outdid themselves. Even the stage performers they had acting out parts of the show were incredible, especially the man in "Splash A Little Water On It." Something about the live versions of all their songs always seems to put a new angle on them. If you're on the fence about seeing them on this tour, GO. Especially if the last time you saw them was in a bigger venue.

Oh yeah, and I talked to a guy there that bought one of the Sadobabies they used in the show. Autographed by Perry, covered in sharpie writing, decked in cheap jewelry, and I think wearing one of the necklaces on sale at the merch booth - $200. He said "At least it'll be a conversation starter, no matter where I put the thing."

Piko

Jane's seems to really thrive in smaller theater/club settings. They feed off the good vibes in the smaller settings. Completely different experiences.

Deconstruction is basically the missing Jane's album. It's an album that I couldn't get enough of when I first heard it. It was the goodbye. Dave went on to rhcp to do likely their most underrated album, ever. Eric did Polar Bear (which I recommend).

I still cling onto the hope that we'll get another Porno album. Perry says "someday". Hopefully it happens. They supposedly have a third album written already. Good God's Urge is a pretty special album to me.

For me, anything from the self-titled live debut to Ritual de lo Habitual is essential. I do like some Porno for Pyros but I've been disappointed with Perry's solo work and the stuff Jane's Addiction did since Strays as it feels overproduced and slick as it lacks that rawness and sound that Eric Avery brought to the band.

Eric's singing is pretty meh on the Deconstruction joint, but the musicality is on par with Ritual, if you ask me..
I had no problem with his vocals, but i agree that the voice could be much better...

For me it's:
Nothing's Shocking > Ritual... > Jane's Addiction (Live album) > Strays > Great Escape Artist

"Three Days" is clearly JA greatest song, but "Nothing's Shocking" is the best album as a whole...

Song for song NS is better Ritual can't be beat when it comes to the arch of the album. The way it starts with your standard type rock songs and then turns less aggressive, and more experimental and epic. The sonic quality of the album reigns supreme as well.

I remember that Skype interview with Eric. That revealed a lot into what was wrong with the reunion. Plus, remember 20 years ago when Perry chose not to do Lollapalooza because Metallica were the headliners and then recently would have big stars to do the festival all of a sudden? It seemed like he betrayed all of the things of why he created Lollapalooza in the first place which was meant to be a festival that was alternative to the mainstream.

Everything Jane's/Perry has done post-1997 has pretty much been a joke to me.

You know what's an even funnier joke than their output from the past 20 years? Their little online fan forum, comprised of like a dozen of their most hardcore fans.

I used to post on the old Xiola.org forums way back when, before Jane's became the Perry and Etty Farrell show. Then that guy Sonny who ran it (and was pretty awesome) did that Skype interview with Eric about why he left Jane's, then decided to shut Xiola down for good.

So the remaining 10-15 holdouts started up this sub-Jane's forum called Aintnoright and I eventually found my way over to that place. And I remember the guy Hokahey or whatever he called himself who ran the site fucking HATED Nine Inch Nails, for some reason. Like, unreasonably hated them, to a comical degree. This guy would bash NIN every chance he got, often for no reason at all.

Right around the time Eric joined NIN's touring lineup for the duration of a coffee break, this guy Hoka lost his mind about it and started trashing NIN on the forum again. So I decided to troll the shit out of him and pretty much show how full of shit he was. It had its own thread on the forum and everything, and I would just troll this guy every time he wanted to complain about NIN, which was often. This guy was like 50 years old, too.

It eventually seeped out into pretty much every thread on the forums: this dude would start complaining about NIN and I'd debunk whatever he was complaining about. He honestly seemed to believe that Jane's were a more relevant band than NIN, which was hilarious. He even got this one guy from Brazil who posted there to threaten he was going to rape my grandmother or something, which was even more hilarious.

Finally one day I just embarrassed this guy so bad that he banned me from the forum indefinitely. Sent me this PM about how his house wasn't big enough for the two of us, or something? I still laugh about that shit to this day when I think about it. I don't think I've ever embarrassed someone on the internet quite as bad as that guy, and on his own Jane's forum no less.

Anyway, I digress: NIN > Jane's Addiction

Some old-school Van Halen fans are even worse. 50 something year-old men calling each other "fucktards" over which era of Van Halen was better.

This is my personal JA and company ranking:

1. RDLH- Their most creative, best written album, IMHO.
2. NS
3. Deconstruction
4. The Great Escape Artist
5. Jane's Addiction (live)
6. One Hot Minute
7. GGU

lol

Or that time Jane's broke up (again) in 2004 because the band couldn't get Perry to agree on a recording timeline. Or any business timeline. It's why they were going through their management, to determine what was going on with band business. Perry was busy with Lolla for the summer and said there would be no Jane's business for the rest of that year.

So Dave did Rockstar that summer and started recording with Perkins/Chaney/Isaacs as TPC.

Then Lolla went belly up and Perry wanted to know why his band didn't jump at the first opportunity to make music for him.

Perry later turned around and said they couldn't record or tour because of Rockstar, which was a lie. Dave recorded that two days a week in LA and only agreed to do it AFTER Perry rejected any Jane's plans.

So Perry got fed up with "his" band not doing exactly as he said and released that ridiculous statement to Rolling Stone about the band "being taken over by new masters" and "Jane only strips for me"

Soon after, TPC announced their existence once Perry threw his tantrum and put Jane's to bed officially.. TPC was weak, and Rockstar SuperNova sucked. too bad Dave was involved with both projects.

Huh... they took the Porno for Pyro's video down for some odd reason... That was a great video.
Was an interview with Parry and his wife in their back yard and they Perry went to join the other members for "Pets" and "Kimberly Austin" acoustic in the garden.
Was a fantastic video.... wonder why they took it down.

Holy shit! I thought that bridge was completely burned after he put out all those videos on youtube airing out ALL the dirty laundry after that reunion tour, and ill fated record that TR was producing.

This morning I saw tickets for UBS Arena were on groupon. Now I see Dave Navarro will be sitting this tour out due to long covid. Avery is back, but now they still won't have the classic lineup. Tour not off to a great start.

Welp if there has to be a Jane's tour without Navarro, then I guess Troy van Leeuwen is the best possible second choice.

He has "long Covid" but will be working on new Jane's music in the studio. (https://blabbermouth.net/news/dave-navarro-to-sit-out-janes-addictions-fall-2022-tour-due-to-his-nearly-year-long-battle-with-long-covid)

Really sucks for him, being sick that long and missing the tour. But he's smart to sit it out.

This will be the 4th different band that I see Troy play in. APC on Fragility in 99 (Philly), Failure at Brooklyn Bowl in 2016, countless QOTSA shows, and now JA at Wells Fargo in Philly with the Pumpkins. Navarro is one of my all-time favorites, but I did see the original Jane’s lineup once before. So I am not upset…

I went to the Jane's/Smashing Pumpkins show last night and it was awesome.

Sorry Navarro wasn't there, but Troy Van Leeuwen was a more than adequate replacement. Josh Klinghoffer joined the band for "Three Days," which was awesome. Perry seemed to be in really good spirits and I was happy to hear "Three Days."

I've loved JA since I was, jesus, in the fifth or sixth grade, and then I became a big fan of Porno for Pyros.

I've never seen JA, or PFP, but there was this "secret show" in dallas in like '07, and it was Satellite Party.
They released the tickets into the arts district and such, or would give tickets to people who looked cool, I guess. My brother had blonde dreads at the time, and was handed 4 tickets at the ole' stage job.

Anyway, it turned out that it wasn't REALLY free, because you had to sign a waiver that allowed them to use your likeness in any ads, for CAMEL CIGARETTES.
But, hey, they also gave us each two packs of our choosing, after we signed the forms.

So they played a Satellite Party song. But THEN, they played a PFP song. And then they played and old Jane's song.

And fuuuuuuuck, me. It was a small spot, and it was like 60% JA, 20% PFP, and 10% SP.

It was fucking amazing. So, that's my Jane's Addiction live story.

Nothing, Josh was just a guest for 1 song

Just read a review. Troy is still the guitar player. Josh just joined in for "3 Days". Daniel Ash played a few songs, too. Don't know why I care, not really into either band nowadays.

Hey, no worries! Sorry if I was being anal retentive, I was just curious about Josh. Glad he had time to do something besides gripe about how the Chili Peppers done him wrong haha. Fan sites bring out a lot of OCD tendencies. I call it the Hateful Fred effect. The Fredheads are notorious for that sort of thing & I in no way want to emulate them.

It's all good and I should have worded that differently.

Watching Jane's the other night reminded me what a great band they are. They still sound fantastic live and with Eric back they could hopefully make a great album, the true follow-up to RDLH.

Just Because is a great single, and I wish they wouldn't kick it out of rotation whenever Eric is in the group. Same thing happened the last time I saw them in 2009.

I guess the new material is all self produced?
It would be cool if they have Dave Jerden back, that would be the truest reunion.

Idk. There Porno for Pyros tracks that REALLY, REALLY sounded to me like the Ritual followup, especially on the firat one: Meija, Cursed Female, Sadness, Cursed Male, Bad Shit, and then Tahitian Moon and some other ones (I can't think of their names) from the GGU tape.

I honestly think that's as close as we're gonna get. I don't expect some incredible comeback record, 33 years later.

Edit: trigger warning

And, tbh, I've never thought Dave Navarro was anything special, nor Eric Avery.
Hell, that's WHY I posted that Satellite Party story in this thread.
Perhaps there's some magic chemistry between guitarist and bass player that went into the WRITING: who knows.

But for me, the standout tracks from the two PFP albums ARE the RDLH follow up, and I really didn't miss anyone from the eighties when I heard Stop and Three Days and Whores and Mountain Song and Jane Says, etc, at that Satellite Party show.

Hell, I have no idea who was IN that band, aside from ole' Peretz. Seeing those songs performed in a tiny club, up front, was just...it was more than enough.

@elevenism (https://www.echoingthesound.org/community/members/2475-elevenism), I haven't listened to the PFP albums in ages. Worth another spin. I have Perry's boxset, but it's just too nice to take the plastic off.

I didn’t find out until I was like 6 beers into my tailgate on Friday. But the Pumpkins made up for it! Quiet, Starla, Silverfuck, and XYU in the same set. It was insane….
