I watched a couple of episodes "accidently" the other day when I was flipping through the kids channels to find a show for my toddler to watch. Strangely engaging for something that makes little/no sense most of the time.

I want a 4 dimensional bubble blower and a game console you can go inside :P

Why do people my age like this show so much? I tried watching it and it does nothing for me. As far as Cartoon Network goes it doesn't stack up to any of the Cartoon Cartoons in their prime (1999-2002).

Adventure Time definitely works on different levels. Also, if you haven't seen BMO Noire, do it!

was anyone else a little disappointed by last week's episode? i was hoping for a little more back-story than what they gave us. i mean, to be fair, i kinda lost it when ice king started singing the cheers theme song because that was adorable, as is little marcy (though i'm still not clear on how she was able to be out in the sun?), but i wanted MORE, you know?

^I wanted to see what that Bubblegum had to do with PB!

She is my favorite character by far and they've barely hinted at her past. I hope they delve into her soon. She's one of the more interesting characters. Her weird cruelty, fear of mortality, and badassness in that cute pink package is so full of win.

so, this week's episode was INSANE. i had no idea it was going to be CGI and a lot of the "glitching" was hard to distinguish from whether or not the cable signal was breaking up...it was weird.

This was the first episode I've seen of this show in a few years (I've only seen about 4 or 5) and I can't believe how hard I was laughing for most of the episode. I hate to be that guy, but the episode kind of encapsulated how my mind works on LSD =X especially the "one second later" part. I was also laughing about how inappropriate a lot of the humor was for a kid's show, yet it still retains a sort of innocence.

I've been a huge fan of this show for about 3 years. This and Regular Show are without a doubt two of the most brilliant things in the history of Cartoon Network. I dig The Amazing World of Gumball, too.

I saw the pilot on YouTube or something yeeeeears ago. Late 2006? I was immediately sold, and I'm so pleased it's grown into what it is today. When Mel and I were on our roadtrop (http://www.roadtrop.com[/url) we'd stopped at the CNN center in Atlanta and there was a goddamn Rainicorn coming out of the wall there. You go, Pendleton Ward!

no, they released complete season 2 (http://www.amazon.com/Adventure-Time-Complete-Second-Season/dp/B00BDD1UYI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1376775272&sr=8-2&keywords=adventure+time+season+2) on both DVD and Blu-Ray. i've been debating buying both of the first two seasons since i have every episode downloaded (in full HD, 5.1) are there enough extras that make it worthwhile? especially with neither season being in 5.1?

Great article. I honestly am in awe that the show has become what it is. The first 2 seasons were relatively "normal" zany fare and now shit is dark and crazy as fuck with amazingly complex characters. I think what the show does that makes it work better than most kids cartoons these days is that it develops the characters from ep to ep and season to season. If something happens to them, it will effect them later. There is no moment that exists in isolation. Avatar: The Last Airbender was like that too.

i feel like, for the most part, this is getting a bit too dark/weird for me. i find myself being frightened by episodes (particularly last week's) rather than being fascinated by them.

i mean, i watched plenty of ren & stimpy as a kid, and it was a pretty weird and definitely gross, but it never got quite so existential/dark. so i'm wondering what kids who are watching adventure time think of it.
meanwhile, regular show just continues to get better with every episode.

I feel the complete opposite but I suppose its a matter of taste and what you expect/want from this kind of show. I'm actually surprised and stoked as fuck that they have basically fully committed to developing all the characters in such a complex way. They are so ballsy right now, most of the most important information regarding plot and psychological development is being done through strange subtext. I often wonder how the show even comes off to people who aren't watching every week or paying wayyy close attention.

My fave moments from this season so far:

Finn losing his arm b/c his dad is a dick
Finn's other time traveling self becoming his own sword O.o
The way Finn got his arm back was poetic as fuck
Princess Bubblegum being called out for being a bad person and stopping her surveillance
Jake creating and destroying a universe within himself
The backstory of Ice King's crown originally being programmed by a wish brought upon by child abuse o.O

Idk man this show is crazy. I've never really seen this happen to a cartoon, where it starts off like any other being funny shorts with fast paced gags and some plot development, and turning it into this like deep exploration of characters and circumstance. Its not even that that impresses me the most though. I can't get over how the writing style is so steeped in layers of mere implication. A lot of the most important character stuff most of the tumblr fandom doesn't even catch onto, im like who the fuck are yall even writing for? Me. lmao

So what happened with Adventure Time? I feel it lost it. It lost that magic that made it special, that quirkiness.
Episodes I've seen from the most recent seasons I've found heavy-going, preachy, overly dark and surreal for their own sake.
I will keep trying, but damn, I feel something changed here.

that is basically a perfect summation of how i feel about the show now. there were six episodes in a row last week including the two-part season finale and they were all pretty disturbing/not fun.

Hulu recently added the first five seasons so I can finally catch up with this show.

I would argue that its changed to be boundary pushing emotional and character driven storytelling, told using daringly abstract plot devices that are completely unprecedented in family programming. I stopped watching it primarily for a light good time a long time ago. There is 3 good seasons of that and they've said they feel a responsibility to do right by the characters and give them the most interesting creative story possible. So I guess it is for its own sake in a way?? I much prefer it myself.

That article actually is mostly talking about an LSP character aspect that was planted as early as early season 3. She has pretended animals talk to express her own insecurities in three episodes now. I would argue they are the opposite of reckless, but the show can be viewed recklessly since its most enjoyed and understood with reflection and analyses. Adventure Time def thinks LSP's depression is a serious problem, as thats what they've been exploring with her for several years now. It was hidden under an even more comedic tone before, and like with most the dark aspects of the show its more they are bringing them front and center instead of letting them fizzle in the background, as opposed to just introducing most of the ideas.

Is it a bit too dark for the youngest set? I think our culture is annoyingly obsessed with keeping kids away from dark themes myself, but if someone thinks so I would hardly consider it a valid criticism against the quality of the show as mostly quite responsible and thought provoking, without devolving into the kind of show that is there to give lessons. Not every kid's show should do the same thing and have the same purpose.

The 2 part finale gave me all the damn character feels. Finn :') He's 16 now. Harry Potter grew up with the character and AT is doin the same.

Honestly never cared for this show (top post on this page even states it) but on a whim I watched some episodes and enjoyed them a great deal more than I ever had. Maybe I was a crab a few years back and tried watching it? Either way, consider me a noob fan now. I bought blu-rays of seasons 1-4 at a good price. I'll buy season 5 with my next paycheck. Sweet.

Such a weird series in a good way! It managed to deftly balance between being a show that children can watch (probably caused a few nightmares but hey, nightmares are a part of life) and a show that adults can enjoy in several layers. I liked how it sometimes felt like stream of consciousness stuff, like stories that a child would improvise while playing. Yet it never talked down to children and dealt with some heavy stuff on the way. Quite moving at times too. The finale was great, a fitting ending to the world of Ooo.
