Boardwalk Empire -I love me some Steve Buscemi. The casting is so awesome on this show. I love the attention to detail in costume and don't mind the effects they use to jazz up the boardwalk. Even some of the music is great. I'll need to learn how to see this show when my HBO subscription runs out in a couple of months.

I've been using SideReel for my dexter, and breaking bad fix. It basically links to megavideo and other sites. It usually is pretty solid (i only check the megavideo links) every now and then they will get pulled but usually i can catch whatever the next day.

I decided to rewatch Lost, and I'm heading towards the final two episodes of season 1 now. I have to say: I'd completely forgotten how awesome Lost 1 was! Though there's also a sense that, really, they had no idea what they were doing.

I was going to make a thread on it, but decided not to. Blade Runner. It's my favorite film ever and the soundtrack has to be one of my favorites too. I highly recommend to those who are new to sci-fi or love the genre altogether. I'm getting the 5-disc blu-ray edition for Christmas. Color me EXCITED.

Black Mirror was seriously messed up. Brilliant stuff.

Internet feed went down for ten minutes at the start, spent the rest of the show going "No, they didn't REALLY ask that did they?"
Could've done a better ending though. Looking forward to next week.
Loved it! Including the ending and just how serious everyone was about the ridiculous plot. Looking forward to Sunday's episode.

Because I'm ill, I spent the day on the couch, which resulted in a mini-movie-marathon. Saw Monsters vs. Aliens which I absolutely adored even though it had some flat bits (but OH MY GOD Insectosaurus!), Black Swan (didn't live up to even the promise of its trailer, sadly), Super 8 (let down only by a week ending - everything else felt like Goones crossed with eerie Fringe) and The Black Daliah (definitely not good). So two good flicks, and two only-slightly-upwards of mediocre movies. Good score.

God, yes, that was so funny. I just loved how those kids were real kids, talking right through eachother and messing up words. It reminded me most of all of The Goonies, really, it had that same energy and kindness to it.

I just watched Kung Fu Panda II (and the whole 'you were adopted' thing keeps cracking me up), and Easy A. It's not the new Clueless, but I did love it and I kept thinking throughout How can I use this in class? The only thing that bothered me is that most black & whites were evened out or nuanced (for every bad guy there was a good one, for every stupid adult there was one who genuinely cared) but the religious people were all nutcases. But it raises some very interesting points about being young, about image and about how different sexuality is still percieved for boys and girls. PLUS those parents were a treat. So I might subject my fifth years to it when we kick off 'love and sexuality' as a theme around March.

I've only done season 1 of The Wire and loved it. I just hadn't had the time to do any others. I might go after season 2 this week. I have been watching the early Twilight Zone and have been very entertained. There are a TON of episodes.

Fright Night. Yes, the remake.

On Old ETS, I was one of the first to scream bloody murder at the news that they were remaking this movie. I must admit that it's better than I thought it would be. Colin Farrell is very good (as he most always is) and David Tennant is absolutely hilarious as the foul mouthed Peter Vincent.

Not a great movie but it could have been far worst.

I honestly thought it was one of the big surprises of the year. I really enjoyed it. In fact, I think this is the best thing since Scorsese has done since The Age of Innocence. I loved the fact that there is this wonderful adventure story involving children with a bit of cinema history involved. It definitely appealed to the film buff in me yet it had a lot more to that. I think more families should see this film instead of fuckin' Alvin & the Chipmunks 3.

Recently watched: Melancholia: horribly boring, dull, dumb film.
Shame: overrated, pretty dull film.
What is with this "alienated" aesthetic so popular right now? Give me a film I can care about watching, please.
The Descendents: not as bad as those too, but not that great either. Too understated for its own good, really. The awkwardness was on-point, and the kids' acting was good, but the overall feel of the movie was a little off.

I saw Young Adult last night. I really liked it except the movie should have been longer. Patton Oswalt is really excellent in it and I would have liked his character to have been in more scenes. Charlize Theron really nailed it as person that's going through a slow train wreck.

It did actually, especially the little details that spread from part 1 to part 2. When you hear the radio talk about the new Headmaster of Hogwarts and when you hear Harry talk about "the other night" when the trio were all at Malfoy manor.

I'm currently watching the HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce; It started off really well, some really poignant dramatic sequences, but at episode three it really started to feel a little heavy handed with the dialogs and music cues. But at episode four I found the change in actress for Veda particularly startling, the part was impeccably played by Morgan Turner for the first 3 episodes who played the role so coolly, her delusional perception of her condition literally chilled me. Then I guess due to a few year jump in time they decided to go with an older actress choosing the absolutely vapid Even Rachel Wood as her replacement, her unbelievable overacting killed the sense of danger and unpredictability Veda brought to the show, replacing it with the persona of just another spoiled brat. I'm going to finish it up tonight with episode five, I hope it can redeem itself.

I loved Todd Haynes' version of Mildred Pierce. It was better than the film version in terms of its ambition and character study. I really think Evan is great in that role yet she was monstrous up to the end and she held her own against Kate Winslet.

For me, I've been drawn to "Pawn Stars," some show about international house hunting on HGTV and, today, a marathon of "Gangland." All pretty silly and pointless, but fine when there's nothing else on.Pawn Stars can be entertaining with three generations of pawners (hee hee). Made for tv with the grandpa and grandson being the nutters and the dad being the only sane guy. Also, seeing what people think is of high value and turns out not is pretty humorous for those lazy days as you say. Someone turned me on to House Hunters International a couple of weeks ago and I gotta say, I can't believe some of the crap people will buy. It's also amazing how cheap stuff is outside of my area. I'm retiring to Costa Rica.

A film called FISH TANK with Michael Fassbander in it, came out 2 years ago, won virtually every award going. MASTERPIECE.

About a teenage girl living on a London sink estate who is lost. Has no hope. Escapes through music and dancing. Gets involed with her mothers boyfriend. Anyone who has ever been involved with a dodgy boyfriend or girlfriend will understand completely why she goes with such a scummy man. What it does for her and him, it made me feel euphoric watching it. Its better than it sounds. It looks like it could have been shot by Stanley Kubrick, on a lower budget very atmospheric its a piece of art.

People have been telling me to see it for ages, i did not expect it to be so good, it touched my soul in a way few films have recently. Its beautifully shot. Its beautiful in general.

Wow, did Red State suck. WOW. It was just ok, bordering dangerously close to bad, all the way until the end. Then the last ten minutes came along and put it squarely in the bad category. Absolutely terrible ending. Terrible. The only thing that salvaged it from being a complete waste of time were a handful of moments that were actually decent. But they were outnumbered by stuff that was downright laughable. Stephen Root is completely wasted in this. There's no room in this movie for a bumbling detective straight out of a Farrelly Brothers movie. I didn't care about a single one of the characters. Actually, that's not true. There were some little kids in the movie that I kind of gave a shit about. And the dialogue was awful.

Oh, and we don't need to be having a long-winded, stilted, overly dramatic and unrealistic conversation in a barn while there's a huge firefight going on outside. Just...just no.

Actually, now that I think about it- the only part that actually moved me emotionally involved the kids. And that's just way too easy.

Anyway...yeah. Avoid at all costs.

That's what I'm watching as well. Gonna watch all the movies and then hit up all the special features. I don't usually watch many special features but these are just fantastic. Watched them all when the extended editions first released on DVD and am excited to watch them again.

I saw "Young Adult" last night, with Charlize Theron and Patton Oswalt. I wouldn't have seen it if some friends weren't going, but I wasn't totally against it either. Man, did it blow. Theron plays this terrible woman, a grown-up popular kid from high school who has not matured or really grown up one bit. She sucks. She tries to steal her high school boyfriend from his wife and kid, she's totally delusional and nothing is ever redeemed about her. Patton Oswalt is really the only good thing about the movie, as a grown-up geek who was beat up by jocks in high school, and left crippled. You think she might learn something from him, but she doesn't. The only thing I can tell that she learns is that small towns suck, and she's better off in her meaningless life in a soulless apartment in the big city.

It's not funny enough to justify having such a horrible protagonist, and it's got too many attempts at poignancy to really convince you that the movie hates her too. The movie is simply depressing. I actually found it pretty misogynistic, being written by Diablo Cody ("Juno" scribe), as all the women back in her small hometown still envy this awful woman, despite how shitty she treats them all, and continues to, right up through the end of the film. The only redeeming major character in the movie is a man (Patton Oswalt), and, of course, this being a Jason Reitman film, the cast is a disappointing sea of white white white faces. Throw in obligatory coolguy references like Pixies, the Breeders, the Replacements, and fucking Four Non Blondes, and you've got yourself one problematic movie with shitty characters and few laughs.

I just finished the first season of The Wire. Not bad, I have to say. Quite good. I can't say I love it (yet), but I definitely enjoyed it. I don't think it comes even close to the hype, though...so far, anyway. I know it's just the first season, so maybe I'll change my mind on that. I'll definitely be watching season two.

Finding an unknown actress can be risky and rewarding but in this case it was a detriment. I thought she and the film were pretty terrible all around. Her character wasn't likable/relate-able (bad writing) and the actress didn't make that fact any easier (bad acting.) I actually forgot Fassbander was even in it since all I remember is how bad the actress was. Personal opinion I guess, since it still gets decent feedback.

On a better note - I finally saw 50/50! Holy crap that was good! Legitimately laughed and (sorta) cried during the same film... doesn't happen often these days. The scene when he was yelling in the car just really got to me. I have a few nitpicks about the movie (therapist-patient stuff,) but I'm willing to overlook them since the rest was so good.

For me I find it mindblowing you could HATE the movie, but there are many many films that have been lauded to high heaven which I have hated. Half Nelson, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Napoleon Dynamite to name a fucking few. However this to me seemed like one that was different and acctually lived up to the hype that people kept barking on about and which is usually annoying. I thought she was amazing. She was not actually an actress she was spotted by the director on the street in real life having a fight with her boyfriend. She seems pretty spot on, the fact that it did not seem contrived was what I liked, really realistic of those types of girls that grow up on impoverished drug ridden, depressing estates or projects. Michael Fassbander portrayed a pikey perfectly.

Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol, blew me away. Surprisingly unbelievably really really good, apparently a lot of people seem to think so too, and i hate sequels so was not expecting this. Best by far. I did not expect it to be that good. Ive never really been a fan of the series.
The first one seems like it was released aeons ago. Only 1996 but seems far far away. The second one sucked it alo had that Limp Bizkit song in it, the Third one was OKAAAY.
This one was just amazing. Seemed like a different franchise entirely. Infact they should have got rid of the name Mission Impossible, filmed with IMAX cameras its very easy on the eye. Ive never seen a film look so crystal clear, everything looks stunning. Tom Cruise was good in this too, he looks really amazing for 49. He looks younger about 42.
Because its the 4th one in the series i worry this wont get the respect it deserves. If i had not been dragged to see it, i would have been like yeeeeaaah but.....
The story was engaging, really gripping, loads of exciting out of this world stunts. Really great film, best action film of the year. This is what more franchise sequels should be like.

Alien Quadrilogy.

The trailer for Prometheus made me want to watch the Alien movies again. I've always loved the first two but I only had vague memories of the others. I did remember how much hate they were getting though!

I chose to watch the Assembly Cut of Alien³ and it is so much better than I remembered the movie to be. Yes, it is still a very bleak and depressing movie but it it beautifully shot and it has a solid cast. One of the mistake they made with the theatrical release is to have cut almost all of the scene involving Paul McGann's character, Golic. Cutting those scenes only made the movie more confusing.

As for Alien Ressurection, it is indeed the weakest of the series (I'm not counting the horrible Alien vs Predator things) but again, it's not as bad as its reputation made it to be. The crew of the Betty have a great Firefly vibe (but maybe I'm the only one seeing that) and again, it has a good cast who gave solid performances. Ryder was great as Call and I quite like the new Ripley. Not a great movie but I've seen far worst.

Now I'm praying that Prometheus will live up to the hype.

The second season is worse than the first, but in Season 3 is when it really starts kickin...Heh...I'm enjoying it more than the first so far, because at least something is actually happening. It took nine or ten episodes for things to get going in season one. I don't mind a show being slow at the beginning of the season as long as it pays off in the end, which The Wire pretty much did. But it is kind of nice to have a somewhat engaging story already instead of having to wait a long time for anything to start happening.

Anyway, I'm sticking with it. I guess at this point I would say it's good but not great. But, obviously, I haven't reached the later seasons yet, which I've now heard from more than one person (yourself included) are really good. So...I'm sticking with it.

Watched all three movies of BBC's Sherlock Holmes (2010). I really enjoyed them. They've done a great job modernising the settings and characters without compromising the spirit of the stories. Both Cumberbatch and Freeman are great in their respective roles of Holmes and Watson. I think my favourite was The Great Game, followed by A Study in Pink, with The Blind Banker coming last. But they were all very good. I look forward to the second season!

I should happened across it waiting for another CSI rerun, and ended up watching the whole thing. It was fascinating, and actually quite moving. There's a large portion of them listening to DAT tapes from the Hansa Studio recordings, and at one point you see Bono looking up, almost pointing his ears, straining to listen, and he goes 'Is this the first time we played this?' I usually don't think of him as a musician or someone who creates music, but that image was really moving.
On the whole, I thought it was very good. Definitely recommend it, even if you don't like U2 very much.

The Avengers - the notorious 1998 remake with Uma Thurman and Ralph Finnes. What the fuck went wrong there!! A BOMB in every shape way of form, definition of a big budget failure and how NOT to make a film.
Its like they shot it, ran out of money or time or something and just pieced it all together in desperation, studio pressure money etc. everything got muddled in the production by the sounds of it. Lack of communication. The film was like a weird montage of things that dont make sense. Uma Thurmans British accent was dreadful. She looks hot though in that black tight suit. mmmm.
but what a mess. messiest film ever.

Just finished season two of The Wire. Really good, I have to say. The ending was a bit of a letdown, but other than that, it was a good season. I still don't think it lives up to the hype, but it's definitely a good show and I'm enjoying it quite a bit.

It really did have a terrible ending. It does just a bit more after it cuts off where the "the tape ran out," and I've gotta say, whoever came up with the idea to do that at the end if a movie clearly had no idea what the hell they were thinking.

I saw it tonight, and let me just say that the audience laughed trough a good chunk of the movie, myself included, and literally eeeveryone in there boo-d the ending in some way. First person I heard said "That's some straight up buuullshit!"

It had a couple of parts that were good, like David's little "episodes," but other than that, I can totally get behind the "contender for worst film of 2012" statement I read somewhere.

Edit: If you want a little more detail on the ending, Shoot me a pm, because I don't want to ruin it for anyone wanting to see it themselves. But I will say right now: I wanted this movie to be good, too, but it really wasn't. Save your time and money!

The Iron Lady - Meryl Streep is as ever magnificent, she can inhabit anyone it seems like, truly one of the best actresses of all time.
However it was a weird film, very, very strange film. Not what you expect at all. Its a film about dementia, they focused more on Margaret's Thatchers current mental illness than her political career.
I had heard it was disappointing, but thats*because*I thought it was going to glorify her and water down her negative policies.

Its not about politics its about a mentally ill woman reflecting on having an extraordinary life. And once being a titan.

All the events are through Flashback. Its actually a really sad, dark film about a frail old lady being unable to get over her dead husband.

But the general vibe is that its just and ODD picture. I cant make sense of what the film was trying to do. Was a bit of a mess really. But the only reason i can think of to see it is Meryl Streep.

Leon - The Professional - An all time classic. The camerawork is mind-bending, its ahead of its time. It looks stunning. The camera work is so good its unreal. Its set in New York but does not feel American at all. Seems very European.

Gary Oldman plays an immensely dark character. I love him, best ever actor to play villans.

Shame Luc Besson never did anything near as good as this again.

However, watching the extensive extras for the prequels, I was struck by how (since it was released in '99) there was a lot more use of minatures (in conjunction with CGI) than you might imagine - and those miniatures looks phenomenal in hi-def. The Podrace is thoroughly entertaining, and the one-on-one with Maul and Obi-Wan is fucking fantastic no matter what way you cut it.

I still need to finish watching Empire Strikes Back on blu-ray, and of course Jedi, which is my favorite.

The pod race gave me a headache: way too long, annoying, and a tangent from the plot. The inhabitants of Tattooine looked too cartoony for me. All of the CGI creatures looked pretty terrible. There were several scenes in which Neeson and McGregor were just looking in the wrong place (above Jar Jar Binks' head, for example).
I don't know what "one on one with Maul and Obi-Wan" you mean. The last couple of minutes when they fight after Qui-Gon Jinn is killed? I don't recall anything special about that.
Liam Neeson did a good job, and Portman's costumes (and accent) were pretty amazing...but there's so much wrong with this movie, it's hard to know where to start.

Finally watched The Drunk and on Drugs Happy Fun Time Hour. So much different than Trailer Park Boys, which I guess shouldn't be all that surprising since Clattenburg didn't write this. It was pretty good, but not something I'll watch over and over again like TPB.

Over the weekend I managed to see-

Haywire- decent film, had some badass parts but a pretty minor work for Soderberg
Melancholia- Lame first half, really intense second half. Overall, one of the better films of 2011, and I recommend it if you're into that sorta thing.
Antichrist- Trier's earlier film, and I like this one significantly better then Melancholia. There are some of the most truly disgusting and disturbing scenes I've yet to see in a film, such as the lead character gets his dick beaten with a wood block, and then is forced to cum blood. and a female character cuts off her fucking clitoris with rusty scissors. but honestly, it's a beautifully done film. Some great cinematography and an insane surrealistic atmosphere. Highly reccommended if you have a strong stomach and like arthouse crap.

I can understand that the first time you're watching the film, the first half may seem sort of devoid of purpose, but if you look the movie as a whole, the first half does a great job of setting the mood of the characters and their personalities. It really pays off as you watch those personalities react differently to the passage of Melancholia and essentialy switch places: The "strong" ones become the weak and vice versa.

Really enjoyed Melancholia a lot - one of my favourites of the year along with Taking Shelter. Both were mesmerising & affecting on the cinema screen. Completely agree with you, Alexandros, that it may be a film of two halves but both are very much connected, with the latter gaining more power from the first. You could feel the whole cinema lean further back into their seats for the ending as it built and built.

For people that like movies that drag you in and leave you thinking about them afterwards I'd certainly say to ad Taking Shelter to your list as well.

So...I finally got around to watching a little bit of Tosh.0 today (after seeing just snippets before) and I have to say that this show is awful. I don't get it. Didn't even make me so much as chuckle.

Conversely, and on a more positive note, I watched the first season of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, though it was just ok and never ending up watching any more of it. Tonight, I caught the last five minutes of the episode where they're giving each other an "intervention" at the bar- and now I'm convinced I need to give this show another shot.

Southland's new season started. I can't get enough of C. Thomas Howell and Regina King.
Top Chef - Yawn, starting to bore of this food p0rn. I think I'll just watch Chopped. That one entertained me a few times.
Toddlers and Tiaras - I caught about 10 minutes of this one. WTF? One of the little kids mom was massively fat and so deep swamp trash that they subtitled her conversation with her baby daddy/cousin. Shiver.

I just watched Cronenberg's Videodrome again for the first time in forever. I was surprised to notice that a film of its age still really stands up in comparison to todays standards of films (considering that it heavily relied on a lot of the surreal scenes).

Just finished watching 50/50. Wow. That was a GREAT movie. I think Joseph Gordon-Levitt should have gotten an Academy Award nomination for that. Incredibly sad, funny, just an all around really well made film. And I can't get over the ending. Every once in awhile you see a movie that has the perfect ending, and this was one of them. The dialogue, the music, everything just came together in exactly the right way. Wonderful.

Agreed. It was a very well balanced film, and surprisingly more funny than I expected. Hopefully JGL gets some more recognition with some of his upcoming films which seem very promising.

I'm running a little project I've called Movie 366 on my blog. Came up with the idea on New Years Day. So I'm watching a movie a day for the entire year. One ahead so far. Seen some awesome ones (Moon, The Artist...) and some massive disappointments (Anonymous, Bridesmaids).

Mostly watching stuff I've not seen. Also on Sundays, having not seen them (or read the books), I'm watching the Harry Potter movies with the kids. Goblet of Fire tomorrow. Of course my wife is in labour right now. No I am not joking. So that may be on hold. (It's the reason I'm one movie ahead, since I know I might have to skip a day when the baby is born.)

The two movies mentioned above are the best I've seen this year. Moon is on Netflix, at least in Canada it is.

I also appear to be the only person who thought Drive was terrible. Won't get into why. Suffice to say seeing Sally Sparrow from Dr Who utterly wasted depressed me.

I just finished watching Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory after watching the previous films for the past few days. I'm glad the guys got out but I'm not satisfied with what they had to do to get out. I'm mixed on the ending though I was relieved to see that they were innocent.

The Tunnel (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1735485/) - yes it's a documentary-style, low budget horror film. Yes it's been done before but this was done pretty well. Not great, but had a few decent moments. Best part? It's free. I thought that was cool of them so I figured I'd mention it.

Update: Managed to get by the scratch issues and see this through to the end. The end!! I think I was watching with mouth agape for the final 20 minutes. Amazing.

I've been wanting to watch the 2009 movie adaptation (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0473705) for quite some time because Russell Crowe is in it (and he's on my list of actors I'll watch anything they are on) but I kept reading about how superior the BBC series was so I decided to track it down first.

That series is the best thing I've seen in a long time. I watched the whole 6 hours of it in one sitting; I just couldn't get away from it. It's got it all: top notch cast, incredibly clever writing; you name it. It's all there. Television at its very best. I especially enjoyed Bill Nighy's performance, clever bastard!

I'm not sure I'm going to watch the movie version now because I know there is no way it can top the series. If I do end up watching it, it will be to see how much of the series they have cut to make that twisted plot fit into a 2 hours movie.

So, just watched David Cross's Bigger and Blackerer. And it was...not good. Not terrible, but not really all that funny. I laughed a few times, but that was about it. Kind of a bummer, because I really like David Cross, and maybe his other specials are better, but this one was a dud.

So, just finished season three of The Wire. It was good, but not great. The last two episodes of the season were fantastic, but the rest of the season wasn't all that good. My least favorite of the three I've watched so far. I still don't get all the hype about this show. Not to get too negative. But I would say it's good, not great, and not "the best show ever made" or anything like that. Still, it's keeping my interest enough to want to watch the rest.

Tomorrow I start Boardwalk Empire. Definitely looking forward to it.

In the Land of Blood and Honey--hmmm still processing this movie and its ambivalent ending. While the movie does spotlight the systematic use of rape in the Bosnian war, it's only a small focus of the movie. :/

Just watched the first episode of Boardwalk Empire. That was a pretty damn good pilot, I have to say. Definitely interested in finding out where this goes. It had a sort of Mad Men meets Sopranos vibe. Scorsese directing definitely didn't hurt.

And Omar was in it!!! For, like, two seconds. WTF. I almost wanted to scream at Nucky, "Omar's coming! Run!" Heh.

edit: Oh just read your post in the previous page nevermind....well, 4th and 5th season really kicked ass. I really don't quite remember what season 3 was about...pretty much each season has new characters and a theme attached to it, like in 2nd season the action takes place in the docks, which i didn't like much, so i was glad they got back to the baltimore streets in the 3rd. Was amsterdam in season 3?

Boardwalk's first season is a bit above the second IMHO, since the season's story is more coherent and wraps up nicely at the end. Season 2 is great nevertheless, but a bit all over the place with its story arcs. But it managed to set up a more than interesting mood for the third season. I can't come soon enough:From what I've read it will concentrate more on Capone and a new guy and upcoming mobster that Nucky has to deal with will be introduced.

La Casa Muda / The Silent House (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1646973/) - almost a really good horror film.... almost. Actually, half of it is an excellent film. The first half. It progresses into a plot resolution that frankly doesn't make sense at all. It's not that "I'm not getting the ending," no, it literally doesn't make sense. It's a shame really since it could have been an excellent film.

Made in Uruguay for about $6,000 USD. 78 of the 89mins were presented as a single take. I've read it did have cleverly placed edits, but it came across as one continuous shot very well. An American remake w/ Elizabeth Olsen is set for release this year. I had decent hopes for it since she was great in Martha Marcy May Marlene and I thought the plot problems could be fixed, but the trailer looks too slick and polished and seems to lose the grittiness of the original. Oh well.

I am enjoying the show, I don't want to give the impression that I don't like it. I just don't think it's as good as everyone makes it out to be. But it's enjoyable. The third season wasn't quite as good as the first two seasons, but it hasn't discouraged me from watching the last two. I will say that season three did have a really good ending.
