Unfortunately, these guys just played their last show Sunday. Ive followed them around southeast Michigan for the better part of 8 months, and it was a sad moment to see them finally call it quits. They were the premiere post-hardcore band in the area, even getting booking out of state, and headlining local venues regularly. i guess i have a soft spot for my local metal scene.

The Second Layer and Five or Six tracks have been my favourites so far. I got turned on to Cherry Red through their Slowdive reissues (with awesome-packed bonus discs). They also put out a greatest hits comp (The Shining Breeze) that has a very agreeable tracklist.

yeah, i'm a fan of talk talk, through every phase of their career. don't knock their synthpop, though spirit of eden and laughing stock are truly mindblowing records. don't get the new vinyl reissue of the latter. it sticks an unfinished and unfocused demo smack in the middle of the record, which is a huge buzzkill.

now playing, on repeat for the past few days:

Yeah, I've been playing some Laughing Stock as well, fantastic record. I'm so glad I discovered such beautiful music! And just to clarify, I do like their new-wave stuff as well. I just find the transition between the old and new Talk Talk really fascinating, how many bands could pull off such a major change of style?

Anyone who enjoys the aforementioned Talk Talk LPs should definitely check out Bark Psychosis' Hex if they haven't done so already. The absolute pinnacle of "post-rock" IMHO.

There's also an eponymous solo album by Talk Talk frontman Mark Hollis which is even more subtle than Laughing Stock, maybe a bit too meditative, but worth checking out.

A real mixed bag for me at the moment including:

Old Cabaret Voltaire with frequent C.O.M.A outbreaks.
The new Trailer Trash Tracys album "Ester" (Mmmm, dreamy weird)
The final Snowman album, "Absence", from last year.
Plenty of the HTRK "Work (Work Work)" album.
Old Scott Walker kitchen sink epics ie the ever glorious "Montague Terrace (In Blue)"

As I say, a bit all over the place.

If like me you're a big fan of Ben Frost, Tim Hecker et al but felt that a lot of their releases in 2011 maybe were more cerebral than physical/emotional then this might be for you too.

Sounds like one of the edited samples in Cabaret Voltaire's "C.O.M.A." mashup of their 'The Covenant, The Sword And The Arm Of The Lord' album is Depeche Mode. The release dates fit perfectly with coming not long after the DM source too.

How on earth have I never noticed it before!?

I have suddenly started listening to White Zombie's Astro-Creep: 2000 over and over. I kinda liked White Zombie back in the day, but never owned any of their stuff. I definitely prefer White Zombie to Rob Zombie though. Right now, it's some kind of weird pseudo-nostalgic throwback for me, finally getting properly intimate with music I should have been listening to when I was 16.

I still have a lot of respect for that album, even though I haven't listened to it in probably ten years. I remember when I was younger playing the crap out of it. It's really catchy, and it's got an incredibly high replay value.

And I'm with you on Rob Zombie. I'm not really a fan of either anymore, but I remember being really disappointed by his first solo album and I pretty much lost interest in him after that. It wasn't nearly as good as White Zombie.

why noone I know listens or even knows about this band is beyond me... good, catchy stuff with some real highlights.

just got that on vinyl recently---- looking forward to dropping the needle on it. an all time favorite (also see the shoegaze thread for more on curve and their like).

I'm somewhat confused as to what the distinctive criteria of "dubstep" is, but I'd call those guys more instrumental hip hop and/or glitch hop. Still, the genre of dubstep has been perverted to the point where it's hard to decide upon exactly what it is. I've heard people insist that Flying Lotus is "dubstep," and I'm pretty sure they're just reaching for the closest tag they can find.

In some ways, "dubstep" has become today's ambiguous "alternative"

All that listening and talking about T&A's scores for Fincher reminded me of this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuWIhaW_BfI

A great an unusual score often overshadowed by the cult status of the film itself. And frankly, I'v forgotten it myself for quite some time.
Fincher really knows who to turn to when it comes to orchestrate his movies.

As far as I'm concerned, the criteria for dubstep is ~140bpm, sub bass, oscillated synth basslines, half-time drums, and something in the higher register floating in the background. For example, here's me shamelessly plugging a 'dubstep' tune i made a few weeks ago (http://soundcloud.com/repl1cate/the-light).

"Brostep" (which gets thrown around a lot as well) is a derogatory term made up by purists/elitists who prefer the works of Skream, Benga, Burial, etc. who essentially started the scene in the UK before it exploded all over the world. I'm a huge fan of the aforementioned artists myself, and do credit them for essentially creating the genre, but I wouldn't go so far as to classify them as "real dubstep", or refer to Excision or Zomboy as "brostep". In my opinion it's akin to saying Elvis made "real rock & roll", and making up a ridiculous name to tag The Beatles' music because it's similar enough to be in the same genre, but different enough for you to point it out and say "I don't like songs that sound like this, I'll refer to them all as [new genre label]".

Yeah, I mean, that's what I would generally refer to dubstep as, but then people tell me that Burial is dubstep, and I just don't see the resemblance.

Nice track by the way. If I were to offer a suggestion, I would say you might want to switch up the bassline a bit. You've got the tone down though. What synth are you using?

I was toying around with making "dubstep basslines" on my Virus and in Massive, and the best results I got were to use multiple instances with slightly adjusted versions of the same basic tone. In massive, I loaded up OSC 1 with the Modern Talking OSC, and OSC 2 with SIN-SQUARE and pitched it down 12 semitones. Then I assigned the same sync'd LFO to adjust the Wavetable on OSC 1 and the LP filter. Then I just opened up three different instances with the same patch, and then I set the OSC on two of them to run at slightly faster rates than the original, the third one I left unsync'd at a slow rate to make those huge sweeps. On the slow big one I ran a Ohmicide and smashed up the low end, used Izotope trash on two of the others, and Logic's bitcrusher on the fastest one. That way, swapping the programmed notes between the different synths and automating the rate it changes things up a lot. Fun stuff, but I still haven't completed a dubstep track... I keep getting sidetracked.

On a Techno binge.....DAVE CLARK and also JEFF MILLS, OCTAVE ONE, JUAN ATKINS, UNDERGROUND RESISTANCE. This is the real hardcore techno shit. Also Detroit has a wonderful musical legacy. It was an electronic music Mecca in the late 1980s, which mainstream American radio and T.V totally bypassed, in Europe it had/has much respect. There are a few compilations im really taking a shine too which pay that industrial wasteland some much needed respect.

I recommend Larks' Tongues In Aspic to follow. It was the first in the trilogy of albums that concluded with Red. Starless And Bible Black hasn't grabbed me as much as the others, but the opening track is quite a good rocker for KC.

Two words - Death Grips.

They released, for free, possibly my number one release of the whole of last year - the full-length "Ex-military (http://thirdworlds.net/exmilitary.php)" - still free, still extraordinary. You all have this already though, right?
Now it turns out Death Grips have TWO albums to drop this year. If these first two examples for them are are anything to go by then bring it on. From carpet bombers to snipers in less than a year.
